Regiments / 93e Régiment d'Infanterie de Ligne [Recruiting NA/EU]
« on: September 04, 2018, 07:20:21 am »

The 93e Régiment d'Infanterie was involved in more battles than any other regiment in the French army. During the Napoleonic Wars the regiment fought in 76 battles and earned 3 Battle Honors. The regiment was involved in combat ranging from Italy and Spain to Russia and Germany. The regiment took part in some of the greatest battles of Napoleon's era such as Essling, Wagram, Borodino, Dresden and Waterloo. So intensely involved was the regiment that it even fought as marines during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

From 1797 to 1800, the regiment was a major contributer to the war in Italy against Austria. It fought bravely during the campaign and took part in all of the major battles. After this it was stationed at Rochefort, guarding the harbor island of Aix. From 1804 to 1806, the 93e became the garrison of marines for the boats that it had guarded. During this time it fought at the famous Battle of Trafalgar, not many other regiments can say they had such an honor.

Napoleon's march on Russia saw the 93e Ligne yet again off to war. All battalions were reformed and marched forward with the rest of the army. The fighting was hard yet the regiment managed to fight through Borodino before reaching Moscow. Coming under heavy fire from Russian cannons at Borodino, the regiment advanced against the Russian infantry, taking a couple standards and losing a fair amount men before being forced to withdraw by the Russian cossacks. After Moscow the regiment retreated with the rest of the army yet survived enough to still be effective in the following campaigns in Germany. The regiment decisively participated in the battles of Dresden, Leipzig and Hanau in 1813 before continuing to fight valiantly in France until Napoleon's abdication.

During the "Hundred Days" the regiment was re-organised and marched into Belgium. There the 93e Ligne fought at Quatre Bras putting up a steady defence before having to fall back. The next day, the regiment was then heavily involved in a lot of fighting at Waterloo. After the defeat, the regiment retreated back to Laon and took up positions, ready to defend the capital. There it stayed until Napoleon's final abdication, marking an end to the regiments history during the Napoleonic Wars. Afterwards the regiment remained and took part in many Wars fighting in both World Wars.

History of the 93rd

Upon the disbandment of the two regiments in 1799, the new 93rd Regiment was recruited from the recently disbanded Sutherland Fencibles by their old colonel William Wemyss, at this time a Major General in the British Army, on behalf of his 16 year old cousin Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland. Wemyss had the remaining volunteers from all over Sutherland lined up by Parish and selected those he thought most suitable and issued each of these a pinch of snuff, a dram of whisky and their bounty money. When the regiment first mustered, in Strathnaver in August 1800, not a single man selected by Wemyss failed to report. There is a cairn at Skail, in Strathnaver, marking the spot where this muster took place.
One of the soldiers who had served with the Fencibles and then with the 93rd was Serjeant Samuel Macdonald. Sergeant Macdonald was reputed to be a veritable giant, standing six feet ten inches and a chest measuring 48 inches. A one time actor, being cast in a Drury Lane production of Cymon and Imphigenia as Hercules, Macdonald served in the 3rd Sutherland Fencibles as a sergeant of the Colonel's company. With the raising of the 93rd, he volunteered for the new regiment, being accepted by Wemyss. Countess Sutherland, upon seeing Sergeant Macdonald, donated a special allowance of 2 shillings 6 pence a day. She is reported to have said that anyone as large as Sergeant Macdonald "must require more sustenance than his military pay can afford."
The 93rd Sutherland Highlanders became famous for their actions during the Crimean War. The regiment was sent to the Crimea in 1854, after war broke out against Russia, as part of Colin Campbell's Highland Brigade. They took part in the storming of the height above the Alma River followed by a move to Sevastopol. On 25 October they were stationed outside the British-controlled port of Balaklava as part of its very thin defences. The Russian Army sent a massive force to attack Balaklava, the Russian force was 25,000 strong; but only their massed cavalry pushed right forward down the road to Balaklava. Part of this threat was parried by the immortal charge of General Scarlett's Heavy Cavalry Brigade.
On the 28 December 1814, the British advanced up the left bank of the Mississippi River towards New Orleans. The 93rd Highlanders come under fire 750 yards from Andrew Jackson's parapet, by the parapet and a schooner on the river. They laid for 5 hours in the rain, sleet & bombardment the British then pulled back. 1 January 1815: British attempt a reconnaissance in force. Torrential rain bogs down artillery & troops. US left flank actually routed and in flight but unperceived by British until too late to take advantage. 8 January: Final British assault. Mistakes and bad luck add up. American position on right bank of river actually overrun & captured. Left bank; American advance redoubt taken by detachment of light infantry companies including that of the 93rd. British right flank falters. 93rd aborts support to captured redoubt and crosses field to help faltering right flank assault. Halts 100 yards from parapet. Lt. Col. Dale killed. No orders to advance or withdraw. 93rd stands fast & is mown down. General Edward Pakenham killed. Orders finally received & after futile attempt to advance, 93rd marches off field. British losses: 2,000. 93rd contributes 300 to 550 killed, wounded & prisoner. 18–30 January: British withdraw downriver to ships, embark. 11 February: British capture Ft. Bowyer outside Mobile, Alabama. 93rd & others landed on Dauphin Island outside Mobile Bay. 13 February: Sloop-of-War brings news of preliminaries of peace at Ghent. Women & children of 93rd allowed ashore.
July 1881, the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders were united with the 91st (Argyllshire Highlanders) Regiment of Foot to form the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Princess Louise's (Sutherland and Argyll Highlanders) later renamed Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's) . The traditions and character of the 93rd remained so strong that members of the 2nd Battalion would continue to refer to themselves as the 93rd right up until that battalions move in to suspended animation in 1947. For ten years a clumsy arrangement of the 1st and 2nd Battalions receding and taking front place with each other continued until the Colonel charged the 1st Battalion (old 91st) with absorbing and embodying the traditions of the 93rd.

Thread is a work in progress*

Before you comment, please take a moment to think about what you are going to say, if your going to talk shit ; chances are i've heard it before and i wont care.  Secondly, this mod will be released and worked on by MYSELF, meaning the beta will be about a year from now. Thirdly, Why a No Muskets mod? Because, muskets dont require skill to shoot someone, its point and shoot, Swordsmanship is a skill, shooting isn't. Fourthly (Yes i Know Fourthly isn't Grammatically Possible or Pollitically correct or even a word.), There will only be 3 Factions in the Game, (Asano Clan, Kira Clan and the Tokugawa Shogunate) why? because im basing this off the movie, and the movie only had 3 factions,(4 if you count the Tengu) well, that concludes my small rant until i have a thread up and running.

Im taking suggestions and if you want to drop in and help at a certain stage or with a certain feature feel free to pm me. (Same goes for Suggestions)

History

The 93e Régiment d'Infanterie was involved in more battles than any other regiment in the French army. During the Napoleonic Wars the regiment fought in 76 battles and earned 3 Battle Honors. The regiment was involved in combat ranging from Italy and Spain to Russia and Germany. The regiment took part in some of the greatest battles of Napoleon's era such as Essling, Wagram, Borodino, Dresden and Waterloo. So intensely involved was the regiment that it even fought as marines during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. After its historic efforts at Essling, the regiment was praised by Napoleon, exclaiming, "You see that there is nothing impossible with such men". From this, the regiment got its motto "To such men, nothing is impossible!". From 1797 to 1800, the regiment was a major contributer to the war in Italy against Austria. It fought bravely during the campaign and took part in all of the major battles. After this it was stationed at Rochefort, guarding the harbor island of Aix. During this time it fought at the famous Battle of Trafalgar, not many other regiments can say they had such an honor.

In 1806, the regiment became part of the Grande Armee, fighting against the Swedes before fighting on two fronts in 1808. The 4th battalios of the 93e Ligne fought in Spain while the 3rd fought in Austria before joining with the rest on the Danube River. Once reunited the regiment took part in the three battles which earned the regiment its battle honors and its motto. (Eckmühl, Essling and Wagram). In 1809 the regiment heroically participated in these historic battles, standing out in Essling when it charged forward into the advancing Austrians, decimating 6 battalions of infantry and skirmishers before fighting off Austrian Uhlans to regroup with the rest of the army. At Essling the challenge presented to the 93e Ligne was deemed impossible, yet with bravery and courage it charged forward, "To such men, nothing is impossible".

There it stayed until Napoleon's final abdication, marking an end to the regiments history during the Napoleonic Wars. Afterwards the regiment remained and took part in many Wars fighting in both World Wars. Today it still exist, carrying on the regiments illustrious history.

History

The Satsuma vanguard crossed into Kumamoto Prefecture on February 14. The Commandant of Kumamoto castle, Major General Tani Tateki had 3,800 soldiers and 600 policemen at his disposal. However, most of the garrison was from Kyūshū, while a significant number of officers were natives of Kagoshima; their loyalties were open to question. Rather than risk desertions or defections, Tani decided to stand on the defensive.
On February 19, the first shots of the war were fired as the defenders of Kumamoto castle opened fire on Satsuma units attempting to force their way into the castle. Kumamoto castle, built in 1598, was among the strongest in Japan, but Saigō was confident that his forces would be more than a match for Tani's peasant conscripts, who were still demoralized by the recent Shimpuren Rebellion.
On February 22, the main Satsuma army arrived and attacked Kumamoto castle in a pincer movement. Fighting continued into the night. Imperial forces fell back, and Acting Major Nogi Maresuke of the Kokura Fourteenth Regiment lost the regimental colors in fierce fighting. However, despite their successes, the Satsuma army failed to take the castle, and began to realize that the conscript army was not as ineffective as first assumed. After two days of fruitless attack, the Satsuma forces dug into the rock-hard icy ground around the castle and tried to starve the garrison out in a siege. The situation was especially desperate for the defenders as their stores of food and ammunition had been depleted by a warehouse fire shortly before the rebellion began.
During the siege, many Kumamoto ex-samurai flocked to Saigō's banner, swelling his forces to around 20,000 men. In the meantime, on March 9 Saigō, Kirino, and Shinohara were stripped of their court ranks and titles.
On the night of April 8, a force from Kumamoto castle made a sortie, forcing open a hole in the Satsuma lines and enabling desperately needed supplies to reach the garrison. The main Imperial Army, under General Kuroda Kiyotaka with the assistance of General Yamakawa Hiroshi arrived in Kumamoto on April 12, putting the now heavily outnumbered Satsuma forces to flight.
