Shenandoah Valley Light Brigade

Shenandoah Valley Light Brigade is a demi-brigade unit, which is composed of three units: 1st North Carolina Infantry Regiment, 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment & 1st Company of Washington Artillery Battalion. Two units all gained high reputation in the Civil war.
The 1st North Carolina Infantry Regiment, as part of the Army of Northern Virginia it fought in the Eastern Theater until the surrender at Appomattox. The 1st North Carolina joined the Army of Northern Virginia and was brigaded under Brig. Gen. Roswell S. Ripley in the division of Maj. Gen. D.H. Hill. On June 26, 1862 during the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek the 1st North Carolina suffered its first heavy casualties as fifty-four of their own were killed or mortally wounded and over one hundred wounded. Colonel Stokes was mortally wounded and died on July 14, 1862. As part of the Second Corps, the 1st North Carolina participated in almost every battle the Army of Northern Virginia fought in the Eastern Theater. The regiment surrendered with the army at Appomattox on April 9, 1865; fielding 10 officers and 61 enlisted men.

The 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia.The unit was organized by Colonel Jubal Early in Lynchburg, Virginia, in May, 1861 as the 30th Virginia Volunteer Regiment. At the end of October, 1861 the unit was re-designated the 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment.The regiment contained 676 men in July, 1861, lost twenty-eight percent of the 163 engaged at Groveton Heights, and of the 385 at Gettysburg about four percent were disabled. At Appomattox it cut through the Federal lines and disbanded at Lynchburg on April 10, 1865. However, 19 men were included in the surrender.
