Normans or Anglo-Saxons?
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:22:15 am »
I recently starting thinking about the Norman invasion of England and how it shaped English culture and language.
Who did you want to win?

I personally will side with my ancestors who were the Normans and some Bretons.
English wouldn't be what it is today without them.

(P.S I am learning Old English and I do notice some things that I do like more about Old English than Modern English.)

Normans. I can't be expected to choose the enemy of my ancestors, can I?

i have relatives on both sides.

i would have to say the Anglo-Saxons.

út út út út

EDIT: út means out in old english. they used to cheer it to the Normans which it basically meant get the f*ck out of my country you bastards!

what alot of people dont know is that William the Conquerer was a bastard, his mother, a lady, had sex with a leather worker, then he was born. thus, the saxons also battle cried ''You stink of leather!''

Either or, just wished the Normans would have been a bit more timely. After finishing the Saxons(or vice versa, had the Saxons been fully prepared and met the Normans at the beaches the battle may have been very different)

I find it unlikely that they could have pulled off a battle similair to Stanford bridge, possibly leaving the north or even the entire country in norse hands for a long time.

The Normans were also descendants of Norwegian and Danish vikings.
My 'English' side was originally Norwegian, before all of the moving and stuff.  ::)

what alot of people dont know is that William the Conquerer was a bastard, his mother, a lady, had sex with a leather worker, then he was born. thus, the saxons also battle cried ''You stink of leather!''

One Castle in Normandy actually taunted William by swinging tanned leather outside it's walls at his troops.

When that castle fell.... everyone inside died.

xD Yes, my ancestors liked to move. From Norway>Normandy>Brittany>England>Netherlands>British American Colonies.

Kind of ironic that I'm learning Anglo-Saxon now that I think about it. Lol
Maybe If I find a book on Norman French I can learn some.

I suppose I'd side with the Normans. An ancestor of mine (at least by name) was a French noble that ended up fighting with William.
