The Electorate Saxony entered the Napoleonic Wars in 1806 as an ally of Prussia in the War of the Fourth Coalition. However, following the Prussian defeat at the Battle of Jena in 1806, Saxony joined the Confederation of the Rhine as an ally of France. Napoleon then crowned Saxony a Kingdom of France. Saxony's army was subsequently trained and drilled in the ways of the French Army and although its infantry were not up to par with French standards, their heavy cavalry was what Napoleon wanted and needed. Serving alongside France, Saxon troops fought in many of Napoleon's campaigns, including the Invasion of Russia and the battles of Borodino, Gorodechna, and Kobrin until the Battle of Leipzig. Following the French loss most of the Saxon troops deserted their ranks and were taken prisoner, as well as the Saxon King Frederick Augustus the First by Prussian soldiers who then put Saxony under Prussian Occupation and administration, most likely from Prussia's ambition to annex Saxony, and a large amount of Saxon troops were forcefully conscripted into the Prussian ranks. Following the Napoleonic Wars, at the Congress of Vienna, 40% of the Kingdom of Saxony, including Wittenberg (home of the Protestant Reformation) were given to Prussia as leverage for their alliance with France. After this, Saxony joined the German Confederation and would be a key factor in the formation of Germany and provider of its troops until the end of World War I. |
Nr.7 Combat History Beginning their military service with Prussia, the Friedrich August regiment had their first major conflict at the Battle of Jena. Badly bloodied by French forces, they retreated away from Prussia, to their homeland of Saxony. After Saxony choose to join the Confederation of the Rhine, the regiment was reassigned to the VII Corps of the Grande Armée under the 21st Saxon Division in the 1st Brigade alongside the Liebenau Grenadier Battalion and Prinz Clemens Infantry Regiment. From here the Grand Armée marched to Russia and the Nr.7 took part in the battle of Borodino and Moscow. After the French retreat, of which most of the regiment was actually left intact, the regiment was reconstituted into the 24th Infantry Division under the 2nd Brigade alongside a battalion of Converged Grenadiers and the Steindel Infantry regiment. Following the retreat, the regiment had it's ranks slightly re-bolstered (Saxony lacked recruits at this time of the war). The Nr.7 would find its next engagement, following the armistice of 1813, at the battle of Grossbeeren were they were smashed by Prussian forces (the Saxon morale would never recover from the defeat). Following a Saxon-Franco retreat, the Saxons saw action at the battle of Dennewitz on September 6, 1813. The battle turned into a complete rout of the Saxons following the arrival of fresh Russian and Swedish troops. Following these Saxon defeats, the remainder of the Saxon Corps was tasked with defending the town of Kalish which held vital bridgeheads the Russians would need to advance further west towards Silesia. On the evening of February the 12th 1813, an advanced Russian force scouted the outskirts of the town to find the Saxon corps holding the town. Having sustained losses, the advanced force withdrew to its lines. The next day, the entirety of the Russian forces (around 12,000) attacked the town who's Saxon Corps was of equal size. The Russians as first had an easy fight as the Saxon defenders were spread rather sparsely. Around the village, the Russian cavalry scored a decisive strike on the 21st Saxon divsion in the villages of Borkow and Kokanin, taking out the 21st Saxon Infantry. After this, the Russian infantry was sent into the villages of Pawlowek and Skarszew but sustained heavy losses to a combined Polish and Saxon force (of which the Nr.7 participated). The Russians retreated and the defenders opted to retreat away from the town after they destroyed the bridges. The 24th division would find its last battle being Leipzig. There, the Saxon corps arrived on the 2nd day of the battle (October 17th). However, the next day, together with light cavalry, most of the 24th defected the the allies followed by the Württemberg cavalry and the remaining Saxons. This would mark the end of Saxony's role in the war as a French ally and was the end of the Confederation of the Rhine. The last of the Saxon forces to continue fighting would be the Saxon heavy cavalry (incredibly loved by Napoleon for their combat abilities). The resulting penalties for the cavalry's continued service to the French resulted in them being disbanded and eventually return home after strong protests and dramatic scenes of lamentation. Following Napoleon's return from Elba, the Saxon army was re-mobilized but due to most of the Saxon army being in the Prussian Army, there was a period of unrest among the Saxon forces. Seeing this and hoping to avoid an insurrection, the Prussians reallocated the Nr.7 and Saxon forces to the Austrian army of the Upper Rhine where they would stay performing minor services and drills until they returned to Saxony on November 20th of 1815. At the Congress of Vienna, large concessions of land, including Wittenberg (home of the Protestant Reformation) were conceded to the Prussians and the Nr.7 was effectively disbanded. |
Ranks: A sort of hybrid between Austrian and Prussian Ranks, Saxon ranks are as similiar as they are different to their German counterparts.
