79th(Camerons) New York Volunteers Regiment

History

══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Active   1858 - 1876
Part of:
Union
* New York State Militia

Created as a social club in New York city in the fall of 1858, the Highland Guard or 79th New York was created with the help of the St. Andrews and Caledonian societies of New York and wealthy financial backers like Samuel M. Elliot and James Cameron, the brother of Simon Cameron, President Lincoln's Secretary of War. The organization had no actual connection to the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Scotland. Only in name and in tartan did they identify with the 79th of the British Army.
Their original duty was to parade, train as heavy artillery, and also provided a guard for the Prince of Wales when he visited the United States and did the same for the Japanese ambassador.
The unit started as a Scottish American fraternity. The 79th, without knowing it, set themselves up to take part in nearly every major engagement of the civil war and become one of the most known and traveled regiments in the Union Army.
When the war broke out in 1861, the Highlanders were mobilised and, as the regiment was under strength, new men were quickly recruited before they left New York City. Under the command of Lt. Col. Samuel Mackenzie Elliott, the regiment was mustered into service for a three-year duration on 29 May 1861, and attached to Mansfield's command, Department of Washington.

On 2 June 1861, the Cameron Highlanders, 895 men strong, complete with pipe band, marched down Broadway on its way to Washington. Passing through Baltimore, the Highlanders received a good welcome—in contrast with the reception the 6th Massachusetts Militia had received a few days earlier. Arriving in Washington, the regiment served in the defences of the capital until the middle of July when it was attached to Sherman's Brigade, Tyler's Division, in McDowell's Army of Northeastern Virginia, for the advance on Manassas.

Other Games / Assassin's Creed Origins
« on: October 31, 2017, 03:21:09 am »
Assassin's Creed Origins is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the tenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate. It was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 27, 2017.

The game is set in Ancient Egypt during the Ptolemaic period and recounts the secret fictional history of real-world events. The story explores the origins of the centuries-long conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins, who fight for peace by promoting liberty and The Order of the Ancients—forerunners to the Templar Order—who desire peace through the forceful imposition of order. Origins received positive reviews from critics, who praised the story, voice acting, immersive world of Egypt and visuals, while criticizing some of the pacing and technical issues. Despite this, some critics called it the best installment of the series since 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Assassin's Creed Origins is an action-adventure stealth game played from a third-person perspective. Players complete quests—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story, earn experience points, and acquire new skills. Outside of quests, players can freely roam the open world environment on foot, horseback, camel-back or boat to explore locations, complete optional side-quests and unlock weapons and equipment.

The "eagle vision" mode, which was used by the franchise to give players the ability to scout an area by highlighting enemies and objects, has been replaced by a Bonelli's eagle named Senu as a companion. Players are able to take control of Senu and scout an area in advance, highlighting enemies which will then be visible when they return to controlling Bayek, the game's main character. Players can also tame various predators which will serve as a companion for the players and assist them against enemies.Naval combat, underwater exploration and tomb raiding return to the series. However, unlike previous games in the series, Origins Does not include many tall structures for climbing to unlock areas of the map.

The game also features revised combat mechanics. Previous titles in the Assassin's Creed series used a "paired animation system" whereby the player character would engage with an enemy and combat would be dictated by a series of predeterminted animations based on player inputs and scripted AI movements. Assassin's Creed Origins will move to a "hit-box system". When the player wields a weapon, they will strike at whatever is in range, allowing them to hit enemies directly, injure individual body parts, and creating the possibility of missing an enemy entirely. Complementing this is the way weapons fall into different categories and are rated on their damage dealt, speed and range. Enemies will be drawn from several basic archetypes that use a variety of tactics in combat which, combined with the hit-box system, will require players to learn the attributes of individual weapons and tailor their playing style to succeed in combat. As enemy combat is also dictated by the hit-box system, the player will be equipped with a shield and will need to balance their offensive and defensive capabilities. Locations within the game world will be designed to enable players to choose their playing style by offering stealth and open combat as equally-viable choices for completing objectives.

Origins introduces an arena-based combat system where the player fights waves of increasingly-difficult combinations of enemies culminating in a boss fight. While the introduction to the arena is incorporated into the main story, the arena mode stands alone from the wider narrative. The game world features several arenas, with a variety of enemy combinations and unique bosses not found in the game world. Players will be able to unlock additional weapons and equipment by completing arena fights.

A future update to the game will add "Discovery Tour", a sandbox mode allowing players to freely explore the open world with no objectives or combat, and embark on guided tours that highlight aspects of Egyptian history.

Premise
The player takes on the role of a Medjay named Bayek as he works to protect the people of the Ptolemaic Kingdom during a time of widespread upheaval: the Pharaoh, Ptolemy XIII, struggles to maintain his rule whilst harbouring ambitions of expanding his kingdom; his sister, the recently deposed Cleopatra, begins marshalling loyalist forces to launch a counter-coup against Ptolemy; and frequent incursions into the Kingdom by the Roman Republic under the command of Julius Caesar lead to fears of an imminent invasion. Bayek's role as a Medjay brings him into contact with the secretive forces manipulating these events and sees him become the first Assassin.

Development
Development of Assassin's Creed Origins started in early 2014, after the completion of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The series had been following a yearly release cycle, but after the launch of Assassin's Creed Syndicate in 2015, Ubisoft chose to delay the release of Origins until 2017. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot cited a desire to focus on the quality of the individual titles, the opportunity to develop future games with new engines, and the disappointing sales of Syndicate as the reasons behind the decision. The team enlisted Ubisoft Kiev to develop the PC version in parallel with the console versions.

Information on Origins, then titled Assassin's Creed Empire, first leaked in January 2017, showing several screenshots of a character on a boat and in front of a cave. The game was officially revealed on June 11, 2017.It is being developed using the latest iteration of the AnvilNext engine. During production of Assassin's Creed III in November 2011 Ubisoft conducted a fan survey exploring potential settings for future titles. Ancient Egypt was one of the most popular choices, but Alex Hutchinson, the creative director of Assassin's Creed III, dismissed the results as he considered Ancient Egypt—as with the other two chosen settings, feudal Japan and World War II—as being "the worst choices" for a setting. The development team hired Egyptologists to assist in making the open world more accurate to the time period.

The original score for the game was composed by Sarah Schachner, who previously worked on the series with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin's Creed Unity.

Marketing
In August 2017, Square Enix announced a promotional crossover between the Assassin's Creed franchise and Final Fantasy XV. Taking the form of an in-game event, it introduced Assassin's Creed-themed content to the game. Assassin's Creed-themed content was also made available in other Ubisoft games such as Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands.

In 1689, Henry Howard, Duke of Norfolk, raised a regiment on the little Roodee at Chester, in an effort to resist any attempt by James II to re-take the English throne.
For the early part of its formation, the regiment was known by the name of the current colonel. In the same year that it was raised, the regiment saw its first action as part of a British force sent to Ireland under the command of General Frederick Schomberg, 1st Duke of Schomberg, taking part in the siege and capture of Carrickfergus.  The regiment fought at the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690, at the Battle of Aughrim in July 1691 and at the Siege of Limerick in August 1691.
The regiment continued to serve as a garrison in Ireland from this point until 1695, when it was sent to the Low Countries for a short time before returning to its duties in Ireland. In 1702, the regiment sailed to Jamaica under the colonelcy of William Selwyn, spending the next twelve years in combat duties against the French and native population, both on land and at sea.
In 1726, the regiment was posted to Menorca where it remained for the next 22 years,[6] although a detachment was present at the Battle of Dettingen in June 1743, during the War of the Austrian Succession.
By 1751, the regiment had become the 22nd Regiment of Foot.[8] In 1758, it took part in the Siege of Louisbourg in French Canada. The regiment also took part in General Wolfe's victory over the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in September 1759.
The regiment received two battle honours for taking part in the capture of Martinique and the British expedition against Cuba during 1762.

=====================================================================================
History
=====================================================================================
The following is taken from New York in the War of the Rebellion, 3rd ed. Frederick Phisterer. Albany: J. B. Lyon Company, 1912.
This regiment, Col. Leopold Von Gilsa, was raised by the Union Defense Committee of New York city, under special authority from the War Department; organized at Yorkville, and there mustered in the service of the United States for three years June 6 and 9, 1861. The regiment was composed of Germans recruited in New York city, except Companies G and H, which were recruited in Philadelphia, Pa., and Newark, N. J., respectively; Company F was armed as artillery, and November 7, 1861, became the 9th Battery; a new company, formed of recruits, took its place November 20, 1863. At the expiration of its term of service, the men entitled thereto were mustered out June 9, 1864, at Hilton Head, S. C, and the regiment consolidated into six companies, B, E, F, G, I and K; Companies B and C forming Company B; D and E Company E; H and I Company I; A and K Company K; F and surplus men Company F; and the remaining surplus men Company G.
The regiment left the State July 8, 1861; served at and near Washington, D. C., from July 10, 1861; in the 4th Division, Army of Northeastern Virginia, from July 17, 1861; in W. T. Alfred Theinhardt, December 9, 1865, at City Point, Va.
During its service, the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 2 officers, 52 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 18 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 4 officers, 69 enlisted men; total, 6 officers, 139 enlisted men; aggregate, 145; of whom 8 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy.

The following is taken from The Union army: a history of military affairs in the loyal states, 1861-65 -- records of the regiments in the Union army -- cyclopedia of battles -- memoirs of commanders and soldiers.   Madison, WI: Federal Pub. Co.,   1908.
Forty-first Infantry.—Col., Leopold Von Gilsa; Lieut.-Cols., Emil Duysing, Ernst Von Holmstedt, Dettler Von Einsiedel; Majs., Ernst Von Holmstedt, Dettler Von Einsiedel, Frederick Menshau-sen. The 41st, known as the De Kalb regiment, was organized in New York city and was composed of German soldiers, mainly veterans of the war between Prussia and Denmark, 1848-51. It was mustered into the U. S. service at New York June 6-9, 1861, for three years, and left the state for Washington July 8, containing besides the New York companies, one company from Philadelphia and one from Newark, N. J. At Camp Runyon, near Washington, the regiment was assigned to the 4th division of the Army of Northeastern Virginia, with which it was present at the first battle of Bull Run, though held in reserve. On Aug. 4, it was" assigned to Sherman's brigade, on Oct. 15, to Martindale's, and in March, 1862, to Blenker's brigade, Sedgwick's division, Sumner's corps, which in April, with Gen. Blenker in command of the division, was attached to Fremont's forces. In the consolidation under Gen. Pope in Aug., 1862, the brigade became the 1st brigade, 1st division, 1st corps, with which the 41 st was engaged at Strasburg and Cross Keys, meeting with its first considerable loss. It was active at Rappa-hannock Station, Sulphur springs, Waterloo bridge, Groveton and the second Bull Run, losing in the last named 103 killed, wounded and missing. It was then assigned to the 1st brigade, 1st division, 11th corps; was held in reserve during the battle of Fredericks-burg; encamped at Falmouth for the winter and participated in the Chancellorsville campaign in May, 1863. Gettysburg was the next battle in which the command was engaged, with the loss of 75 in killed, wounded and missing. In Sept., 1863, the regiment was or-dered to join the Department of the South at Folly island, S. C., and was there assigned to the 1st brigade, Gordon's division, l0th corps. A year was spent in this division, during which time the regiment took part in the operations against Fort Wagner, and the. further operations in Charleston harbor. The original members not reenlisted were mustered out at Hilton Head, S. C., June 9, 1864, and the veterans and recruits consolidated into a battalion of six companies. For a considerable portion of the time the troops were stationed on John's island, but in August., 1864, were ordered to return to Virginia and on Sept. 27 the battalion joined the Army of the Shenandoah. In the winter of 1864-65 it formed part of the 1st brigade, Ferrero's division, and was posted in the defenses of Bermuda Hundred. It was mustered out at City Point, Va., Dec. 9, 1865. . The regiment lost during its term of service 72 by death from wounds and 73 from other causes.

History
The regiment was one of nine regiments of foot raised by James II when he expanded the size of the army in response to the Monmouth Rebellion. On 20 June 1685, Theophilus Hastings, 7th Earl of Huntingdon was issued with a warrant authorising him to raise a regiment, and accordingly the Earl of Huntingdon's Regiment of Foot was formed, mainly recruiting in the county of Buckinghamshire.
n 1775, the American Revolutionary War broke out, widening into war with France from 1778 and Spain in 1779. The 13th Foot sailed for the West Indies, arriving in Barbados. They saw little active service, returning to England in 1782, moving on to Ireland in 1783.
In 1790, the regiment sailed to Jamaica. In 1793, Britain was again at war with France, this time with the revolutionary régime. The 13th Foot landed in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, where the Haitian Revolution was in progress.
Returning to Ireland in 1797 and England in 1799, the 13th were next engaged in a series of minor coastal assaults on the Spanish coast in 1800.
In 1801, the regiment sailed to Egypt to help repel the French invasion force. The 13th took part in the Siege of Alexandria. In 1802, the regiment was awarded the badge of a sphinx superscribed "Egypt" for display on the regimental colours in commemoration of the campaign.
A temporary end to hostilities with France came in March 1802, with the signing of the Treaty of Amiens. The 13th Foot left Egypt in that month, sailing to Malta, where they were stationed for a year, before moving to Gibraltar. In 1805, the regiment returned to England. After occupying various stations in the south of the country, the 13th sailed for Ireland in May 1807. The regiment was brought up to full strength by an intake of volunteers from the Irish militia and sailed to Bermuda, arriving in March 1808. The regiment lost large numbers of men to disease while on the island. War had again broken out with France, and the 13th Foot formed part of the force that invaded and occupied the French colony of Martinique in January and February 1809.
In 1812, the war had widened to include the United States of America. In the following year, the 13th Foot left Martinique for Quebec, from whence they proceeded to protect the frontiers of Upper Canada. The regiment crossed the Saint Lawrence River and took part in minor actions around Plattsburgh and Lake Champlain. The war concluded in 1815, and the 13th Foot returned to England in July of that year.
The regiment spent the next few years on garrison duty in Jersey, Guernsey, England, Scotland and Ireland.
The regiment amalgamated with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in 1959 to form the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry. This, in turn, amalgamated with the three other regiments of the Light Infantry Brigade to form The Light Infantry in 1968.
The Regiment's history is exhibited at the Somerset Military Museum, which is a part of the Museum of Somerset at Taunton Castle.

The Remnants of the 13th, from Algamations is in the 3rd Battalion "The Rifles" and has the Highly Important "Light Protected Mobility Infantry" Which is a modern day equivalent of scouts..
