just a note about the navy seal...
they were testing the weapon no his skills.

I saw an episode of spartan vs ninja...
Spartan won

My favorite of these is the "Belgian Takedown" where you grab the target by the ankles and throw your shoulder into him. His face slams into the ground, inducing shock, and then you finish him with a strike to the groin or the back of the head.
god that is horrible  :o

A better test of a weapon would probably be a few controlled stabs/slashes, then. I'm sure they'd lose most of their data, and I'm not quite sure you can actually stab someone's head off like that.

You make make a jelly-with-spine, just put one in the shape, mythbusters did it a lot, but then with wood, which had nearly the same strength as human bawnes

I would like to see what a single swing from a 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre would do to one of those dummies.

Don't suppose they've tested it, though.

It's well known that vocalization when making strikes or movements is effective. Not to mention intimidation.

Knife fighting is a bit tricky, but you want a low and concealed blade hand if you're going for a surprise approach because you can bring it up quickly into their gut which is a soft spot. None of the up top stuff or coming in overhand, because that can be blocked by hard bone including as the person's arms.

Naturally when you have a knife you want to get in multiple cuts until that you're damn sure the guy is dead. This isn't hollywood. This isn't pursuading someone to give up. It's outright killing someone without a chance of him surviving to kill you.

The ideal cutting spots were demonstrated - upper belly (could have a chance to pierce the heart or lungs) and especially the neck with the throat and arteries. Also shown is the eye, but you can see it's a bit of a more difficult target. If you can get that first good strike in, the shock of the stabbing will be in your favor and you can finish them off like above... stabbing the shit out of everything.
Humans are extremely complicated creatures. Death uncomplicates them to a frightening degree...

The sabre being famous for 'swabbering', it would give a severe wound in the shoulder and/or arms, which would leave the soldier alive in gruesome pain.

Under perfect conditions and all that, it should be able to cut off a head.

The test of the cold steel reproduction is pretty impressive, even though the guy's pronunciation of 'Blücher' makes me wince.

I wonder why they feel the need to make a commercial on how much of an awesome killing weapon it is.

Re-enactors (who buy these swords frequently) DON'T want that feature.

Likely for martial artists who want to actually cut a dummy.

I'm a little worried that they advertise it as sharpened even on their UK site, since I'm fairly sure buying swords like that here is illegal. All my current ones are blunt.
And at £320 or €384, I don't think I'd risk being arrested.

I was more bothered by his bogus claim that it's based on an Indian Talwar. The blade of the 1796 sabre is an almost exact copy of the Austrian cavalry sabres in use at that time. I really doubt the Austrians used a sabre based on those used in India.

I've seen that bit of information floating around before and took it at face value, since I can see the resemblance in the blade.
Spoiler

I know the 1796 Heavy cavalry sword was adapted from a sword adopted by the Austrian heavy cavalry, but did the Light Cavalry sabre have similar origins?

Despite the inaccuracy of the descriptions, Cold Steel makes some really nice sabers, I have their French light cavalry saber, mistakenly labelled as the 1830 Napoleon Saber, and it is a beautiful piece of work, I haven't put it through any serious cutting tests but it made short work out of a bag of potatoes lol, would you like pix?

And yes, the man who designed the 1796 came up with the pattern after serving with Austrian cavalry, I'll look up the specifics later
