A question I have.
-
Because he got beaten twice and left the country a ruin under foreign occupation. Also Napoleon III kinda f*cked things up too.
-
Because it would offend muslims and LGBT society.
-
Hope that will help you (https://www.google.de/amp/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/history/defeated-and-inglorious-why-is-napoleon-not-treated-with-more-respect-in-france-9406220.html%3Famp)
Another question, why can most frenchmen barely speak english?
-
Why would you have a day for a 'man' that was 5'7"?
-
after he lost at waterloo the monarchy came back
-
Why would you have a day for a 'man' that was 5'7"?
Except that was above average for a man at that time so he wasn't really short at all by previous standards.
I agree with Steven that a big part would probably come from the fact that he lost. Had he won then obviously France, and the rest of the world, would be very different today. However he didn't, and every victory that he ever won was rendered virtually irrelevant. Besides, for me at least, Napoleon would be a symbol of the revolution considering that is where he rose to prominence, which is celebrated on Bastille day.

Ah yes, Napoleon Bonaparte...the republican revolutionary who went on to become an Emperor and installed his own family onto half the thrones of Europe.
-
Yes the man who rose to prominence on the back of the revolution and who still inspired his men who saw change in him rather than the old regimes. Just because he crowned himself emperor it doesn’t change how he was perceived by his followers.

Napoleon polarised people’s opinions but he still came about because of the revolution, making him a figure of such. You can not deny it.
-
Just because you English and Americans can't appreciate the metric system doesn't mean Napoleon was per definition shit.
-
Napoleon is nowaday compared to Hitler in France now by some socialist medias. :'(

Napoleon is one of the best things that have ever happened to Europe, especially Germany.

English people can't even speak English.

Can't see how several million dead was good for Europe as a whole, but definitely benefited Germany and Britain. In the case of the former abolishing the HRE led to one of history's biggest unintended consequences.
-
Those dead would've probably died if Napoleon wouldn't have been dead. Jsut in many more, but then smaller, wars.

Several millions?

Several millions?
Estimates range from 3-6.5 million dead between 1800-1815. As many as 1 in 5 French males born between 1790-1795 died in Napoleon's wars. Great book on casualty figures throughout history I always turn to: https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Warfare_and_Armed_Conflicts.html?id=kNzCDgAAQBAJ&redir_esc=y
The Wikipedia page is also fairly good on this. By 1815 France was left with a male to female ratio of 0.857! Given Napoleon bragged about 'spending' 30,000 lives a month this isn't really surprising. If you want to know why Germany now dominates Europe, it's because of Napoleon a) abolishing the HRE, little more than a corpse post-1648 but which served as an obstacle to proper German unification, and b) totally screwing up France's demographics.

Napoleon also bragged about killing 30.000 troops at Austerlitz by shooting the ice the Russian/Austrian soldiers fled over and drowning them. That number was actually 2.
-
Or the 40.000 mamelukes he supposedly killed during the battle at the pyramids.
-
English people can't even speak English.
True that...
Also the reason why French people can’t speak any other languages properly is because they refuse to do it. Everytime we get French clients at my job they expect us to know French. They don’t speak English or are not even trying to. If we don’t understand them what they want then it would be so called “our fault”. I gave up by trying to speak French to them. I just speak Dutch and if they get mad, well not my problem.
-
Nobody likes English people anyway
-
Don't be such a soyboy, Toffee. The world's population consists of more than just the Dutch and French, who aren't exactly beloved themselves anyway.
-
Napoleon revolutionized revolutions, politics, and strategy. He ain't all bad.

I was joking Gordo but whatever floats your boat

Don't kid yourselves, the swamp-Germans are the best breed alive

I can't enter the book but 1. casualties aren't fatalities and 2. I doubt the casualty rate of other nations was significantly lower. A significant amount of 'French' troops also actually weren't French but Dutch, Flemish, Germans or Italians. To say France's low birth rate throughout the 19th century was due high casualties in the Napoleonic war seems a rash conclusion.
-
I didn't say they were the same thing. But anyway, the Napoleonic Wars was the most destructive conflict of the 19th century bar the Taiping Rebellion. As a percentage of the population France lost more men between 1799-1815 than they did in either WWI or WWII. Hardly rash to suggest the Napoleonic Wars were a/the major reason for France's terrible demographics in the 19th century, and most historians accept that it was.

It's a bit like asking why the Russians don't have a day for Stalin.

no no NO
Napoleon did a bunch of good shit for the world. Put some respek on the name.
-
yeah we wouldn't have this AWESOME game without him, Gosh guys??
what the fuck/..>>
-
I mean Napoléon is the reason why half the countries are united as well, I think it's only fair that the French at the very least post the Republican guard at his moved grave.
-
well its cause of western countries having their 'identity crisis'
-
I'm not terribly well read into the issue but I believe a reasoning could be that first the monarchy tried to surpress and even erase the memory of the Napoleonic era and that later during the third republic and after, Napoleon's ideals didn't fit too well with the new republican values of the time. Again, it's a guess.
