Regimental History
On 11 November 1915, the surviving Legion forces on the Western front are merged to form a single regiment. July 1916 - Somme On July 4, when taking Belloy-en-Santerre, the 3rd Battalion was destroyed and lost its commander. On 7 July the 1st Battalion attacked hose Chancellor and in turn lost its leader. In Mid-July, the regiment, which had only three companies per battalion was withdrawn from the front to recover. From 4 to 9 July they lost 1368 men in 3000. April 1917 - Aubérive The battle takes place from April 17 to 21 results in the knockout half of 1500 legionaries RMLE and the loss of the Regiment's commander, who will be replaced by Commander Deville . August 1917 - Verdun On August 20, the regiment is responsible for the attack to relieve the city. In front of them four regiments enemies are entrenched. All objectives set for the regiment are met, and they push over three kilometers into the enemy line.. It was during this feat of arms the regiment wins its sixth Croix de Guerre, and soon the Légion d'honneur, to be placed upon the regimental colours. April 1918 - Hangard Taking the woods of Hangard on 26 April results in the destruction of the 1st and 2nd battalions of the regiment, with the loss of 822 men. May-June 1918 - Soissons On May 29th, the Regiment again holds against the German offensive, at the cost of another battalion commander. July 1918 - Second Battle of the Marne The RMLE from 18 July partake in the great offensive in the region of Villers-Cotterets . The 1st Battalion lost its commander, Husson Sampigny. September 1918 - Hindenburg Line In August 1918, the regiment , who recovered the wounded and supplemented its workforce with reinforcements filing Lyon and executives from Morocco , has 48 officers and 2,540 legionaries On 2 September, the regiment stormed the Hindenburg line of defense at the height of Terny- Sorny. In two weeks of fighting the RMLE lost half its men. Amongst the casualties is 2nd Battalion's commander, Captain Lannurien . Nevertheless, on September 14, the RMLE renewed the attack and pushed the front in the village of Allemant. Regimental History is currently a work in progress. |
