Military experience?
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:54:21 pm »
Does anyone have or had any members of their family in the military?

My great, great uncle served with the Blackwatch Highlanders at the Battle of El Alamein and was killed

Another in Italy, but not much is known about him,

My grandfather served with the Seaforth Highlanders after WW2 as well.

Sometime next year I hope to enlist into the British Armed Forces with the Blackwatch Highlanders.

During a lot of conflicts (I'll get the list later) my great-grandfather went from a Private to Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Engineers, then traveled to America and became a Colonel in a American Air force Regiment. I have his parade medals nearby I just need to upload it.

Let's see...

One of my Grandfather's served in the French Foreign Legion and the Polish Paratroop Brigade, so he was at Arhnem, even if he didn't see much fighting their.

My other grandfather was sent to Berlin post war as part of a mechanised/armoured unit.

I have for great great uncle's on my Father's side who fought in the First Wrold War. One of them almost certainly saw action on the 1st day of the Somme and another was killed at the 3rd battle of Passchendale.

And I have a great step grandfather or something liuke that who was a Lance Corporal in the British army, with campaign medals from the Second Boer and First World Wars. Apparently these have been bequeathed to me.

My Polish grandfather was a Canadian tanker and served in Italy during the Second World War.

A couple of my German great-great-uncles fought for the Germans in WW2.

And one of my great-grandfathers was in a cavalry regiment during the Weimar Republic.

That's about all I know of. :/

My great-grandfather was drafted during WW1 in the US Army, didnt see any combat, never knew him so..

My grandfather was in the US Army, I think 37th infantry, and served in the Pacific theatre of war, in the solomon islands I believe.. he doesnt talk about it at all.. but received a few accolades and a purple heart.

My Uncle also served 2 tours in Afghanistan with the US Army 1st Bat, 28th Infantry Regiment (came back in 2010).
And his son (my cousin) currently deployed there with the 4th Infantry in Jan 2011.

As for me.  I have no cause to join the military so probably will never in my life (unless drafted)

All I know is that my Great Grandfather was a Corporal in the Belgian Army.
I don't even know what regiment he was in.

EDIT:
My Polish grandfather was a Canadian tanker and served in Italy during the Second World War.
You had a Polish grandfather and he was Canadian at the same time? :o

He either came to Canada very young or was born here, can't remember which. I just always identify him as Polish because that's where my surname's from. ;) That, and I find it slightly humourous (ironic?) that I have Polish and German ancestry, considering the events of 1939... :P

Both grand grand fathers fought in Finnish civil war, on white side.

An ancestor of mine, Corporal William Walker served in the 17th Kansas Infantry which was raised for 120 days in response to a huge Confederate cavalry raid. In the one battle they saw, they advanced in skirmish order and then were told to leave because it was a cavalry battle. They went back home in November and either re-enlisted with another regiment or went back to their normal lives.

My Grandfather was a marine serving aboard various battleships manning anti-aircraft machine guns during world war 2. He was in the real shit. Shot at Kamikazes and everything.

My great great grandfather server in the 24th Massachusetts Volunteers. Started as a Sgt and was promoted to Cpt by the wars end. Later died a couple years later out in California in a mining explosion.
Of course, I also think lines should be able to move in double rank without having emotional breakdowns.
