In the War of 1812 and many wars around that time, "officer aiming" technically wasn't allowed. It was an unjust thing to do while in a skirmish.
Riflemen would specifically target officers to create havoc in the ranks.
Although war was seen as a 'gentleman's' pastime in reality it wasn't. Rankers and officers came from two complete backgrounds, so different that in truth the officer rarely got on with his men. It was seen as a duty to serve in the British Army and so many young (wealthy) men did. I doubt very much whether a ranker gave a damn about shooting an enemy officer. He would shoot at whoever was opposing him. In melee it was different as if you captured an enemy officer then you might get a bounty/reward. But this rule was invented because too many officers complained they didnt get to play the game as they always died first.
Also any sources you find (well most) would have been written by those wealthy men who could afford to educate their children and afford writing utensils. So of course many sources will say that officer aiming was ungentleman like and was against the gentleman's code. But in reality it would have been much, much different.

Perfect game.
I go around. I pick stuff up. I customize. I never get killed but am hero. I have statues in my honour. People love me. - Oh wait that's every game
Nah my perfect game would be an open world with loads of places to go to, dungeons, cities, etc etc. Fully customizable character with differing races, classes, the usual RPG aspects. It would be cool if you go around besieging castles, cities with troops that you have in camps, you can train with them, march with them, fight with them. Use them as guards, diplomacy envoys, you can equip all your men, you get plunder wealth whatever. You make and create your army. It has online features, so you can fight army v army or you can get a group of 'heroes' to go around with you (friends from online) and plunder dungeons etc.
Kinda like warband and elder scrolls combined, but just one huge massive open world with no boundaries.

CK2 is more political based about getting land through marriage - but i play it as a war simulator and make up claims then declare war and conquer
