Let me be the first to say: OH MY F*CKING GOD YES! OH YES YES YES YES!
All of these civil war/"Brother vs Brother" mods make me wonder something.
Do you have a brother?
If so, do you fight a lot?
Very nice mod!
I'm definitely keeping an eye on this one.
You have a really stable mod team aswell, gratz!
Although I have to ask:
You stopped development of"North & South" to focus more on
The ACW game "War of Rights".
Why have you started this mod?
Say what now? :o
Would have preferred that American Revolutionary war mod you were going to do.That got stopped aswell or more precise, Hinkel left the development of it.
Say what now? :o
Natty; it's the opposite of grotty.

It's still going though.

TomahawkAU is making a mod for AWI and he can't release it because the has no uniform models. He said the mod is ready to release as soon as he gets the models.

It's about time someone makes a Roman Mod for NW. I can only imagine how amazing Commander Battles will be.
Ballistas would be viable i think.
ERH MAH GURD HAX KILL ME TO MUCH AWESOMENSS ARGH...What he said
ERH MAH GURD HAX KILL ME TO MUCH AWESOMENSS ARGH...What he said was wierd.
This looks amazing. Let's hope that this attracts a large audience for epic, organised battles.A Cornicen would be hilarious.

As I say I will take many above, I'm sure, but I have to say ....
Four hundred thousand mods, but only one ¿live? (Blood & Iron) :-\ :-\
Well, that and notice how many mods are in "process" and how many are finished, and those just dying to couple of months ... The ideas are good, but better to unify some modders and take out a mod as God intended.

Well, I am a modding god myself and other gods are working on it, like olafson is helping too. So there couldnt be a better modding team then this :)
Look at the credit list.

Didn't he narrate a documentary on Lincoln?
Are you going to implement the "turtle" formation in this mod or wasn't it used during the time?
It could still be done, it was just limited. You can't get a perfect (and I use that word loosely) testudo with the Warband engine. You simply can't.
The Testudo wasn't used until the Marian Army Reforms.
The Testudo wasn't used until the Marian Army Reforms.Yes and is way after. Marius was around doing his thing in the early 100's BC
Instead of Legions, I think people should reserve whatever the equivalent of a regiment would be at this time (a cohort?). It would be a little unfair since this is one conflict and there's only so many legions to go around. Maybe the equivalent to N&S's divisions can be legions. XIII Gemina all the way!
The Testudo wasn't used until the Marian Army Reforms.
That doesn't mean it won't be attempted by many of the players.
The Testudo wasn't used until the Marian Army Reforms.
The Marian Reform happened in the 700's BC, and this mod is set in the mid-early 100's BC.

Also, it comes down to who gets it first, buddy. ::)
The Testudo wasn't used until the Marian Army Reforms.
Livy mentions the Testudo formation being used as early as 390 BCE. Whether or not that's accurate is debatable, but it's worth mentioning.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm sure there were very similar tactics used by centuries, including shield over their heads, but the actual square testudo formation was installed into the infantry doctrine by Marius himself.

Yeah, I'm the only one without actual full modding experience. However, I'm going to learn? I think. That's what I discussed with Hinkel. Or, I may do other things, like editing troop names, basic shit like that. May do regiment thread, moderate, who knows. ;)

You what?
Regiments, clans there basically the same thing no need to correct him in my opinion. Now let's just move along and talk about this awesome mod again :DBetween NW and Warband people also rather call the one regiments, and the other clans. (Check the Roman sub-boards on TW) So it does matter if you ask me. And therefore I corrected him.

Regiments will be called "Cohorts" in this modification. Each Cohort can choose a nickname for their unit, like "6th Cohort "The Brave Eagles" or so :)
Only Populares and Optimates? Will be there any Greeks/Middle-Eastern factions? Or Gallic/Germanic tribes. In the whole war foreign nations played great role.

Meh, cohorts are too big. I doubt anyone will manage to get that many people into their clan. I personally think it should be centuries for the "regiments", then cohorts are the "brigades", and the legions are for any formed armies..
I think this was overlooked. Personally, I think matches far better to the NW regiment > brigade > army.Regiments will be called "Cohorts" in this modification. Each Cohort can choose a nickname for their unit, like "6th Cohort "The Brave Eagles" or so :)

Most "regiments" in NW (as in who play the DLC) are also far below their actual strength. As they should be for a regiment. In matter of fact most regiments seem to more have some what the numbers of a company. And seeing Cohort is quite like a regiment, you could say it would fit better. Also, people recognize it more, instead of some random Latin name most have never heard about. They can refer to cohorts as they have seen in games like RTW etc (for example).
Anyway, don't be surprised to see pubbers making clans called legions like happened in RaW and MnG
Good luck Hinkel.. :3
Might be the only reason to install NW again. :P
And what? Foreign troops were in both armies. For example the Juba and his numidian legions. Midrdat from Pergam and his middle eastern cities milita. But i agree to Hinkel, i was just windering if it possible to have foreigners at all, and i got answer.Only Populares and Optimates? Will be there any Greeks/Middle-Eastern factions? Or Gallic/Germanic tribes. In the whole war foreign nations played great role.
Remember it's the The Roman Civil War.
... late republic Rome is best Rome!
... late republic Rome is best Rome!
I couldn't agree more. Gaius Julius Caesar was the last true emperor that benefited the empire. He successfully established millions of square miles of roads to connect the empire. This improved infrastructure, and the speed at which the legions and armies could move around the empire. This benefited the economy, strength, and security of the Roman Republic.
Good luck! I love this era. Long live Pompey, and the Republic!
Just wondering, how do you plan on making Catapults and ballistas move? :)Same way as a cannon?

what about battering rams?
No re-texturing. Replacing the entire model. Don't forget that texturing is giving the model colour. A cannon with a wooden texture looks rather weird if you ask me. ^^
We are perfectly aware of this. We don't come up with features while we don't know how to implent them. ;)No re-texturing. Replacing the entire model. Don't forget that texturing is giving the model colour. A cannon with a wooden texture looks rather weird if you ask me. ^^
They'll have to change everything else about the cannon as well like the cannonball, sound effects, particle effects, loading animation, accuracy, damage, the 'bounce' of the cannonball etc. then rinse and repeat for the howie/catapult.
Otherwise you would have a ballista model that would need to be loaded with a ramrod and fired grapeshot in a puff of smoke.
but I'm sure Hinkel could do all that in his sleep and then some.

Is this visible in the mod?
How will linebattles work in this mod? Will the focus be more on formations and organisation (yay) or moving around in lines and charging like madmen when you close in (boo)?
Melee fighting in lines is simply impractical.wat
Let me rephrase, melee fighting in any sort of tight formation is terribly impractical. Thus, I can't see events being a formation vs another formation.

What's fixed?
I imagine events will play out just like they do in RaW and MnG. People will form up, throw their javelins, and charge. The addition of artillery probably won't be massively effective spare the scorpions, the onagers etc. were designed to blast down city walls, or wreck massive units. You'll probably have an average of 10-15 man lines traveling in a single column, with something so hard to aim the most you'd do is probably scare them. The arty pieces will be used for sieges then...
Is there any sort of release date?

NW uses= Mortar Shells. Grape Shots. Rockets. Cannonballs. We good to go.
Ill keep quiet for now, but i know what is possible since i have seen it with my own eyes.NW uses= Mortar Shells. Grape Shots. Rockets. Cannonballs. We good to go.
Mortars do not have the same animation infrastructure as cannons. The howitzers and Cannons use the same animations and shells are different but one of them explodes, so the howitzer will have to be the exploding artillery catapult, the cannon will have to be the ballista, but since they both share the same animations they might have to be static. Grapeshot canister fires bullet projectiles the same as a musket. Rockets wind like crazy too. Trust me, it's never simple to do these things, why do you think so many mods and ideas fail. Unless you're Vincenzo it probably isn't going to happen for a normal modder.

Hm, sry but that´s not true. Secession was a disaster and is everything but polished. Same for North and South, although it´s still beeing played, particular by me. Don´t get me wrong, I don´t want to predict the same ending for this mod, just wanted to correct you ;)Please elaborate what you see as a finished mod?
I treat a mod as finished, once the modder says, that his work is ready and he doesn´t want to add anything anymore. When a modder says his work is ready, and doesn't want to add anything more, would that not be the same as this...?
What the hell are you talking about? all those mods have polished, released versions. You don't finish a mod; there's no end point at which you call it done. It's done when you stop working on it.
I wanted NaS: Gettysberg!

Small update on our progress. The module is slowly coming along, we have at least one unit completed, the Classis unit; it needs to go through some QC and its ready. We're also making some advances with getting artillery to work properly in NW.

Are ballista going to be like cannons in that they can impale several people and will they be able to go through shields?Yes, the bolts even skim the ground.
Oh okay, that's still pretty cool I guess! Will there be more factions other than the two civil war belligerents? I mean I know it's at a point in history where Rome owns a lot of Europe, but not Germania or Britannia. I think it would be cool if there was more factions so there is more variety, but maybe that's too hard to do because of the artillery and cavalry and stuff?
Any other units besides Roman and auxiliary units?
I don't think most other factions would work. The inherent advantage the Romans have over any other faction in the era would make it hard to balance factions while staying legitimate. The only contender could be Egypt, but even then having Optimates, Populares and Egyptians in one game wouldn't make too much sense. Why not include mercenary units for both sides? If both the Optimates and Populares have access to mercenary hoplites, berserkers, peltasts and possibly even War Elephants(!!!) it would add variety to the mod without destroying balance.Romans are expensive meaning you would have a small number of them due to costs. But with another faction for example Gauls you would have a larger mass of soldiers as a result of low expenses whom could compete against a smaller amount of Romans thus making the factions balanced. (That is of course if Gallic soldiers cost less)
Not a good idea, thats the reason AZW died, and Mount and gladius suffered from that. Unbalanced and horde multiplayer mods don't work. It has to be even teams because not many will want to play the weaker side.I don't think most other factions would work. The inherent advantage the Romans have over any other faction in the era would make it hard to balance factions while staying legitimate. Well perhaps there could be republic factions, too? Like Brutus and his "followers?"
Rome 2 Total war and this one ;) = Epicness
Something needs to be done about the arms. It looks ridiculous with regular skin-tone arms, but having incredibly pale and ugly hands. How is it going to work for black characters? Lol. Is it not possible to keep the regular arms and legs?
Something needs to be done about the arms. It looks ridiculous with regular skin-tone arms, but having incredibly pale and ugly hands. How is it going to work for black characters? Lol. Is it not possible to keep the regular arms and legs? The colour of the hands depends on the skin colour of the character you pick, it looks like a his character is a Vaegir so the skin colour is not going to match, I assume everyone will have to pick one of the races which skin colour most closely matches the models if you want it to all look the same.
I'm sure I recognise those armours from somewhere... Oh, right. They are OSP yes, like it is stated on the frontpage.
The best part was the latin citation in my opinion :D
When is released this game? not going to be released by the Rome II?Rome II is already released and I think it takes a lot of time to make these things, but it is a good team so maybe it will come out soon. :)

Why not add gloves that are the same colour as the arm skin? The arms not matching the face is more legit than the hands not matching the arms, IMO.
those faces require readjusting all the helmets to fit the new heads, whereas for blood and iron i put the faces in before i made all the hats.I particularly loved the B&I faces. Good work on the new animations as well.
But if i recall correctly i thought you didn't like those faces in B&I?

With battles being more focused on stabbing rather than slashing I can imagine it being very advantageous to stay in formation, as opposed to spreading out. Slash attacks need room to work, hence why on mods like Rome at War all formation is abandoned when going into melee. I think formations could really pay off on this mod. :D
Aside from swordsmen, we also have spears and axes and the "Tyrant killer", aka the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pugio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pugio) in addition to bows and arrows and pilums.Axes? Didn't know the Romans ever used axes. Would they be a mercenary unit or....?

So, you're saying that's the base female body model? No, she's actually naked.
The side boob on that Priestess of Mars...
Where did you guys get the recordings for the voice commands? Did you make them yourselves?
First testing today went pretty well, the mini battles were fun and combat is interesting, formations do seem to work, the side which keeps the most discipline wins. That's great news :p In North&South it was more like: "Get out of this line formation, find trees and blast away at the enemies' very tight formation."
Oooh I can't wait 'till it's finished! When did you start working on this anyway?
Bring the Manassass map into Bello Civili is a terrible idea. This mod is not based on ranged warfare, but melee. The maps need to be small, but not too small. Manassass is also a massive laggy map, at least whenever I played North and South it was, along with Maryland my Maryland. The obvious civil war props stand out from the sorely placed, obviously Roman, props. Make new maps, guys. Don't port North and South into everything you make, in one way or another.
Wow, you work quickly.

Guys. Please. You have to stop this. Every time you post something awesome I piss my pants. Please, any more and I will have to get a whole new wardrobe. Good work by the way ;)
Olafson suggested not to have 2 Temples in the same map as they are high poly.
So, seems like this page is all about maps...
Here is a screenshot of my semi historical (historical inspired, not 100% accurate) map I have been working on in my freetime. It is a small roman city, with several temples a bath and a forum. It has fields outside, a small harbour and a roman graveyard infront of the city gate. It has 2 main gates, with the main road and 3 smaller gates to the side. My idea is to make this map work in all gamemodes, including conquest, siege and battle. For example, battle/deathmatch etc. will only take place in the actual city.Spoiler(https://abload.de/img/mb4k0y7f.jpg)[close]

For a city, it's awfully square. Roman cities were in strange shapes since they were built by districts, and each district had it's own section of walls.Yeah, imperial roman founded cities were planned like that, but we have archeological evidence that not everytime these insula system wes strictly built. For example in Augusta Raurica (Kaiseraugst/Swizerland) we have first 2 seperate insulae, but later they were linked to a single one, while the street between them vanished. The first insulae became a big roman house, while the other became a garden. And even in Colonia Ulpia Traiana (Xanten/Germany) or Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (Cologne/Germany) they insulae system was not strict used. It was disrupted by rivers and other terrain marks. But this game is 50 years before the empire, we don't have a wave of colonisation, so in fact there is no real roman city in this time. Most roman cities in this time were greek foundations or emerged from other settlements. Even the most roman city of all roman cites, Rome itself has no checkerboard shape.
So, seems like this page is all about maps...Olafson, you must remake the roman graveyard! It has to be at the streets outside the walls. :P

Legio VII ReservedThe other thread is for Leg reservations ;)
I dont like that Texture...Simple (bigger) walls / blocks / corners with some different texture like the temple-marmor. And I allready talked to Hinkel about some small walls and gates for some courts (the red-white ones). To border insulae or villae. Some plaza textures (to fill the space between big buildings & stuff), colums and and and!
Also, friedrich.. Tell me what you need and I might be able to make that stuff in my freetime.
Via munita: A regular built road, paved with rectangular blocks of the stone of the country, or with polygonal blocks of lava.
More importantly, you've got to have some 3d stone edging along the sides. It was a feature almost universal on Roman roads and it looks silly without it.Ideally but this texture isn't just for roads it's also for courtyards so having sides on every texture block would look really bad.
Also do you have any idea why there is an 84e server up?EDIT: talked to Aldemar, noone did of us.

When I say 3d I mean actually modelled, not a part of the texture. Rather some models you can place along the edges of roads. It would improve the look ten-fold for not a great deal of work.Ah that is a good idea.
More importantly, you've got to have some 3d stone edging along the sides. It was a feature almost universal on Roman roads and it looks silly without it.This has my very support!
The left edge of this road (http://www.megalithic.co.uk/a558/a312/gallery/Roman/Turkey/KurbanliRomanRoad1.jpg) is a great example of what I mean. It's nice and square so you could just make it a rectangle and texture it to look like a bunch of stones placed together. It'd be best to make a few variations of different lengths for different situations. I suppose if they were just 6-sided boxes you could make individual ones, but it'd be hell for the sceners to place them.
This and better sidewalks. The actual sidewalks have a weird yellow texture and dont fit with the village texture or the new village one!The current side walk props are for city buildings really, it matches them.
Like this:Spoiler(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fedtrayes.com%2Ffiles%2F2010%2F02%2FD20_0085-Completely-intact-section-of-the-Cardo-Maximus-or-main-Roman-road-complete-with-curbing-Jerash-Jordan.-January-2009..jpg&hash=f66b7ac52c714631a83a363f96705b29a74ab108)[close]
Would be nice, of course! :)
Every stone is not equal, it's as varied as other textures, its only because the courtyard in that map is currently purely this texture. I think it represents a well maintained roman road, when you look at modern pictures they are the same but very dark and cracked, because they're 2000 years old now. This picture... Its mirrored isnt it?

No-one can! Because it's coming out this weekend.
Almost every Roman road I've seen consisted of irregular, rounded stones like this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d5/RomaViaAppiaAntica03.JPG). The only squared ones I've seen are in Anatolia and the middle-east. I think the round ones look better, too.

In case you guys want to start figuring out which ones your Legions will use right now, these are the official avatars for BC.I have an simple suggestion. The roman wolf you have as banner is wrong. The figures of Rumulus and Remus drinking from the wolf is an addition from the Renaissance (16th century). I would suggest a picture of a coin instead.Spoiler(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb344%2FOfficerpuppy_%2FMount%2520and%2520Blade%2Fbanners_a_zpsdfb60fae.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=8777bf13b0106cbf7272f21403367c3a2eadef4f)[close]Spoiler(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb344%2FOfficerpuppy_%2FMount%2520and%2520Blade%2Fbanners_b_zpse2fbb61e.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=872cd8e22f7ee66109c676a18a8845cbee22e22e)[close]
Sadly not, but imagine Rome without roads. Just not possibru!Almost every Roman road I've seen consisted of irregular, rounded stones like this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d5/RomaViaAppiaAntica03.JPG). Exactly my thought.
I do not like the square texture either. It does not fit into the scene and looks horrible. It is not just the squares, but mostly the color that just doesn't fit to anything else in the game. It is a huge contrast, that just looks odd. The original warband village texture is more or less how a roman (not square) road texture should look like. Beside that, it also blends in very niceley with the rest of the warband textures, especially with the path texture and when using our parrallax shader. I also chose the textures of my buildings to fit perfectly with the NW/warband textures. There is some contrast between them, but I wanted that. I wanted the roads to look muddy and dirty, as opposed to the sidewalk which is cleaned more often. Using a mix of path and village texture gives perfectly fine results too. If you (willhelm) put it back (and I highly advice you to do so) I will make some borders for it, that mappers can place, just as Docm30 suggested.
I can obviously change the sidewalk texture, I can recolor it, whatever you want. It does not fit 100%, but I think it is doing pretty well.Spoiler(https://abload.de/img/mb501spq.jpg)[close]
Maybe I even make a whole road set, but that might be abit too much. Warband is not the best engine to place roads and other repeating elements, as there is no snapping tool.
How about you go with the Village texture from native ? Which is more than just close to what we need... ? It also has proper normal and parallax map setup etc...Olafson, the diplomat. Yeah, actually not a bad idea.
Also, I can make some walls for that. I guess something for around Temples, as they usually had a covered way around it. I can also make normal walls, without roofs and pillars.
Not now though, I got to do some other stuff (BCOF) first.
That's not possible, there can be only 1 paved texture. If we want more, you have to overwrite another like dirt, turf, pebbles, sand, steppe, snow etc.
13th was Gemina,10th was equestris.
You don't need another texture to make it dirty in spots. Just blend it with the path texture.Looks a bit weird if you have dirty spots on a perfect road. :-X
I thought this was a cool little clip. Gaius Julius Caesar addressing the XIII Legion Gemina.

How easy is it to read Latin as an Italian?
Roughly the same as any other western European language. Italian also helps with the sentence structure I believe, But I don't speak Italian so im not sure.

Latin is the foundations of most of the worlds languages that originated from Europe. Most languages use the Latin Alphabet. However languages like Greek and Russian do not. That is when you get those weird looking letters

Easier than for an english, in my opinion, but still if you don't learn it somewhere and don't get a good grasp of its grammar, hard as a stone to understand. I wish i had done informatics instead of latin though...But for me, after learning it for 4 years, it's become more like a second or third language.Roughly the same as any other western European language. Why does everyone love the Populares when Casear was the bad guy? Don't you know the victors write history.
I would say Caesar was worse for trying to install dictatorship while pretending to be for the people and doing quite a bit of genocide.

Didn't most nations commit genocides in war back in the ancient era though? Not saying I think it's right but. Just saying that everyone was just as bad.

Yeah they did, but most of them don't hailed as great men for it.

Well then...Pharsalus. Pharsalus was the main battle of the Civil War, where the heavily outnumbered Caesar smashed Pompeius decisively. So, let's check out what this is all about aye? :DPharsalusSo before screenshots, let's just check out the map settings.
It's approximately as large as Borodino, so pretty big. Pompeius' camp is highly fortified, and closer to the central battlefield, however he lacks in medium range artillery. Caesar's camp is out of supplies and not really a good position to defend. He is farther from the battlefield, but very close to the docks. On the right side, there are 2 equally distanced villas, that you can bar yourself inside and defend it to the last men epic style! On the left, Enipeus river, and on the farther left, a small, fortified hill. The river is a different way of going to the enemy, maybe some flankings and landings! Ok enough, screenshots!!Map design.(https://i.imgur.com/BVnUMLT.jpg)

You need new tents. It's known from archaeological finds that Roman tents were made of hide. I think there may be written references to them being made from such, as well.
Damn, I don't get home until 5 :'(Don't worry it won't be released today. :P

No, all mods are dead for public after 2-4 weeks. Its just what happens.

The clue is in the RPG. And warband has more players.
And again, Warband had a bigger community open to modifications. As it still has btw. FSE is rather limited if it comes to modifications. The clue is in the RPG. And warband has more players.
MM was alive until the day NW released. It's a matter of capturing the attention of enough players to keep the mod alive. However, the FSE forums aren't enough for that, as this section is not visited by many.

Which is why I question the release of the mod as a further modification to NW, rather than on Warband, where it would be much better received.
Because of the possibilities that Napoleonic Wars has to offer compared to Warband, on top of that the quality. Hinkel has said that before. And again, Warband had a bigger community open to modifications. As it still has btw. FSE is rather limited if it comes to modifications.

Because of the possibilities that Napoleonic Wars has to offer compared to Warband, on top of that the quality. Hinkel has said that before.
Because we'd have to remove all the unique features NWs gives, so if you want that you should play Rome at War.
You could take those two as main onces, apart from that, the class system, enginering possibilities. Etc.Because of the possibilities that Napoleonic Wars has to offer compared to Warband, on top of that the quality. Hinkel has said that before.
Enlighten me as to those possibilities. Artillery and musicians?
And I won't comment on the 'quality', as I have nothing to say in that regard.
I do look forward to playing this mod, though. I must, however, put forth such questions and responses whenever someone bemoans the choices they made.Because we'd have to remove all the unique features NWs gives, so if you want that you should play Rome at War.
Good lord, a defensive one.
Stop complaining about the community, then, if you've made the conscious decision to sacrifice the community for features.

Also, no was is complaining about the community, Wilhelm only stated a fact. Those two are not the same.
I never complained about the community, i said mods die for public play on this DLC.
Besides, another Rome mod for Warband would just be dead.

It wasn't just Wilhelm. What both you and Hinkel said do appear to be complaints.Besides, another Rome mod for Warband would just be dead.
If I'm not mistaken, that might just be a hint to stop beating the horse.

What I managed to play was fun, though I won't be able to make any proper assessments until someone hosts a server in Western North America. Good job, though.
I would suggest that you should only be able to do the testudo animation if you have a shield out. It looks like you're scratching your back when you do it with a bow.

Isn't this after the marian reforms? Why do they still have Lorica Hamata's and round shields?

Isn't this after the marian reforms? Why do they still have Lorica Hamata's and round shields?
Marian reform does not mean they have Lorica Segmentata.
The Lorica Hamata was the main roman armor, also DURING the imperial age after 0AD.
The mod takes place 50 years after the reform. Lorica Hamata and the oval scutum was used in that time (no other armor)
After 0AD, a small amount of roman troops used the steel plate Lorica Segmentata. 90 % of the legionaries still used the Hamata.
This was the armor, used by marian legionaries AND by caesar troops:

Ah thanks! I didn't know this!

I can only say what my Prof is telling me in lectures. The problem is, both is not proved if the lorica hamata was replaced by segmentata nearly completly or not. If you find a hamata, it possibly can be from a legion cavalry member as well, it has not to be of an infantry member. But of course hamata wasnt replaced completly. The only fact proven is, that the lorica segmentata was faster and cheaper in production than the hamata. With the same protection.QuoteLorica Segmentata replaced after 0 AD nearly all Lorica Hamata, but ONLY for Legionaries, not for Auxiliary or Cavalry units. But with the beginning of the 3rd century Lorica Segmentata vanishes from use in roman armies.
This was the old opinion based on Trajans column, but it's now being discovered that the segmentata was probably only used about 50% of the time by legionaries, who would have had a mix of hamatas and segmentatas, maybe depending on preference or just availability.
The segmentata, while offering superior protection, was very expensive. Often, you'd see veteran soldiers and officers wearing, since they could afford it. Also, the segmentata was a serious health concern. Due to the way the plates were made, certain movements can cause bodily injury(i.e. Lifting your arms above shoulder height). It could cause cuts, bruising, and could sometimes choke the user. The hamata was more common, although heavier, due to it allowing the wearer to be far more agile, and didn't pose the risk of self harm unlike the segmentata.Nope, it has no superior protection nor is it more expensive. You need more hours of work to finish the hamata than the segmentata. You can do the same movements you can do with the hamata. With the focale (scarf), you dont get any injuries at your neck or somwhere else. Just imagine if miles would'nt be able to work with tool to construct trenches and vallum. The common misapprehension is, that the lorica segmentata is no plate armor! Only fact is: riding with a segmentata is possible, but here of course not recommendable. But we have hybrid cavalry armours, with a lorica hamata and the shoulder parts are segmentata.
And, in regards to how long the segmentata was worn, I was reading in an old military history book from college days that there were soldiers wearing as early as 50bc to as late as 300ad. Whether that is true or not, I don't know. But, definitely it was worn by guardsmen and veteran officers and soldiers, for sure.
How can you say the segmentata doesn't offer superior protection when it was made for that? The purpose of the segmentata was to provide additional upper body and shoulder protection. Why? That's where the barbarian warriors tried to hack/hit at. It was far more expensive, because of the delicate procedure it took to make, including the resources. I'm taking this all out of my old college history book, which was mainly about military history, which was the class I was taking. The roman armor was designed to resist a roman legionary! ::)

9AD is fact, at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest we have the erliest lorica segmentata Kalkriese type! :)
It's an archeological date, not the exactly "oh-it-is-now-produced-and-we-use-it" date! ;D
But most other earlyer archeological contexts are not really "saved", the earliest save one is this one at Kalkriese/Germany.
Maybe the segmentata was used in the civil war as well, but we have for now no archeological evidence for it.
I'm not sure. Well, you're right, it is well documented in writings (De Bello Gallico & De Bello Civili), but more in structure and tactics, not about the specific equipment. And note, both are written by a single man (or the view of a single man), so we can be sure, that he didn't write the whole truth! We have only rare findings of roman military for the late republican period. To be honest I can't point out a single evidence now. Doesn't mean there is none, but I don't know any specific one now! I'm not so familar with republican stuff, more with the beginning Imperial period. :-[It's an archeological date, not the exactly "oh-it-is-now-produced-and-we-use-it" date! ;D

I think it would be known if it was used in the civil war as it was well documented and there have been quite a good archeological finds for it.
