Regiments / [IV] 2. Westfälisches Husaren-Regiment Nr. 11 (11te)
« on: July 02, 2014, 10:06:25 am »

This regiment is attached to the 6. Infanterie-Brigade, which is a part of the
IV. Armeekorps

The 2. Westfälisches Husaren-Regiment Nr. 11 also known as the 11te, is a Hussar Regiment in the Prussian Army. It was raised in the Westphalia region and served in the 6th Brigade and took part in the battles of Ligny and Waterloo. The History of this regiment was a short lived one as they were only raised for the campaign against Napoleon. But they fought with a fire that can be seen in any Prussian Regiment. EDIT: Found out some more info on them, as soon as I can translate the info I will add it. Got the actual name too!

35. (Brandenburg) Fusiliers "Prince Henry of Prussia"

Background:
The 35. Fusiliers are a infantry regiment in the German Empire. The 35. Fusiliers are named after the 35. Fusiliers from the 1700s who were commanded by Prince Henry of Prussia, the Kings little Brother. Not much else is known but the fact that they are raised from Brandenburg.

A little about us
The 35te or 35. is a fusilier infantry regiment for the module Iron Europe. We partake in events where we compete against other regiments in organized battles, often referred to as "Line Battles" (However I feel Trench Battle fits more appropriately with this module). We seek to give players a fun environment.

Spoiler
Here is a little about my experience leading regiments, I joined the MM community under DaMonkey in the 16th Kampfgruppe. I was promoted to Korporal after six months. After my promotion, under circumstances that were unfortunate, the 16th disbanded. So I founded the 35te. I was the Hauptmann of my own gaming clan or regiment as it were. I led the 35te for about a year and a half. We grew to a large number and had great fun. Real life stepped in and my regiment decided to part ways with me. I got out of the leading a regiment for a while and took up second in command of the 16th under DaMonkey. I also did a little second in command under a former regiment member of mine Fritz. So thats a brief history of my experience, and I am back in the game so to speak.

Clans / House Hedrich y Pinten (PW/NA)
« on: July 08, 2013, 03:04:42 am »

House Hedrich

Baro y Hedrichsbyr

Family
The house of Hedrich is a long line of Barons in the Kingdon of Pinten. They have served faithfully under the house of Vorlander. The Pintish kings have been great rulers. Baro Peter y Vorlander and Wilhelm have served together and squired together from a young age. Wilhelm succeeded his father Deitmar II. Wilhelm is the first of his name and is a young Baron in the service of the Pinten Kings.

The House of Hedrich has words they go by. "Eile mit Weile" which means "Make Haste Slowly". This sounds very contradictory but when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. The part of making haste is key. If you work to fast and rush into things, it can turn out badly for you, where as if you go at a good and steady pace, when you achieve your goal you have eliminated all possible outcomes that end bad. The crest of the House of Hedrich is a white eagle on a blue field with a deep red chevron. The White eagle means sincerity while being strong and protective. The red chevron shows the families military strength and command ability through the history. The blue field tells of the strength of the Hedrich family.

Current Head of the Family: Baro Wilhelm I y Hedrichsbyr

The rest of the Hedrich family:
(There are two brother slots open and a sister slot. Children of the Baro will be named by Wilhelm. The person playing the child can voice his opinion of the name.)

The Court of the Baro y Hedrichsbyr
The court consists of courtiers, those who are privileged enough to take part in day to day court life. There are also those who are in the employ of the Baro himself. These are his council members.
Councillors:
Chancellor =
Marshall =
Steward =
Appointed Courtier =
Appointed Senior Serf(Need a better name) =

Council positions explained:
Chancellor - The chancellor's job is to aid the Baron in all day to day activities. He acts as regent when the Baron is away. He oversees diplomatic meetings with dignitaries, both local and foreign. The second most important person in the Barony.
Marshall - The marshall is there to keep track of the troops in the barony. He oversees training and armament of the levies and retinues. He tends to all military matters for the Baro. He helps lead in military campaigns. He also takes the role of leader of the army in the event the Baro cannot lead himself.
Steward - The only other person who has access to the funds of the Barony. This person is in charge of taking care of all finances in the Barony. He collects taxes, oversees the payment of officials and soldiers. He oversees the supply of the castles food.
Appointed Courtier - The appointed courtier is a person selected by the Baro every two weeks to act as a special advisor. He tells the Baron and the council what the word is in the court and around the Kingdom. He will aid in anything he is asked to do. He also acts as the announcer in court.
Appointed Serf - The appointed serf is a elder in the village. He sits on the council and tells the council what the word is with the serfs. Their wants and needs, what they like and what they don't. A rebellion is the worst thing in the world.

Other Courtiers:
The other courtiers are those with no specific role in the barony but are high born lords and ladies and are not expected to toil in the fields. (It is possible for all serfs to work their way to courtier. Most courtiers are expert soldiers as well. They will be expected to fight in wars.)

Military Force and Serfdom Life
The Baro y Hedrichsbyr is very similar to Feudal Europe. The force is mostly raised soldiers from the populace, but there are professional soldiers as well as mounted knights. Knights are landless or landed lords who have served as a squire. These men are heavily armored.
The Barony does keep a stockpile of weapons for levies but for most soldiers and knights, they must pay for their equipment themselves.
Spoiler
Lovag = Knight. The knights or Lovag in Pintish are called by their proper title. Ur. Ur is equivalent to Sir a anointed Knight. The person must undergo squireship before being made a Lovag. This makes sure he has truly mastered the lance, the sword and horsemanship. The Lovag must protect the weak and provide service to his lord. Knights are expected to be at court. They live in the Baros castle.

őrmester Karok = Sergeant at Arms. A Sergeant at arms is a professional soldier. A high ranking member of the retinue. He commands sections of the army and makes sure they push. There are anywhere from 2 to 10 of these in any giving army. Depending on the strength of the Army. These can be mounted or dismounted. Most often than not, they will not be archers or any ranged unit.

Férfi Karok = Man at Arms. These are the standing soldiers under the control of the Baro. These men protect the castle and patrol the village and surrounding lands. They are heavy spearmen and pikemen as well as crossbowmen.

Adószedés = Levy. These are the men and women selected from the peasantry to fight in times of war. If the enemy is too great then the Baro will raise levies and these men will become new soldiers in the army. They are armed with lighter armor and spears, a shield and either a sword or some form of blunt or military pick. The levies are not expected to pay for their equipment. They can if they wish, but they will not be refunded for any lost items. These men will fill the roles of spearmen, pikemen, bowmen, crossbowmen, lancers and anything else needed of them.

Spoiler
Serfs life
Serfs feed the Kingdom and the Baronies. These men and women literally feed the Kingdom. They provide food, weapons, armor, manual labor with raw materials. The Baro y Hedrichsbyr will have certain serf positions that will be filled and only a few needed, where others are always welcomed.
Positions needed to be filled in order of greatest to lowest:
Doctor - There will be two doctors at start. The Serfs doctor who works in the lands healing those hurt on the job or in an accident. The other will operate in the castle working for the Baro and his soldiers and the court.  (2/2)
Engineer - The engineer is a serf who has specialized in building materials. He will operate as a civilian. He might be expected to follow on military campaign for construction purposes. (1/1)
Blacksmiths/Weaponsmiths/Mastersmiths - There will be one master smith. This man is in charge of all blacksmiths in the barony. He will have two apprentices who will learn under him. (3/3)
Hard Laborers - The hard laborers are those who work in the mines and as lumberjacks. These are always needed.
Farmers - Farmers covers everything from the field to animal husbandry to fishing. These are always needed.
Specialist - Specialists are those who work in the taverns, the musicians that sort. Those who make life better with drink and food. These include cooks and tavern workers. There will be small sections of these. Bartenders (1/1) Cooks (2/2) Musicians (1/1).
Tavern Owner - This is one person spot. He or she runs the tavern in the Barony. He or she must pay the 60,000 gold to the baron in order to run and operate the tavern. They can set prices for the patrons. The tavern owner also pays a lessened tax of 1% of original taxes to the Baro. This position is expensive to come by but worth it to the first person.

Roster
Lord and Head of the House:
Baro Wilhelm I y Hedrichsbyr of the House of Hedrich.

Fealty and Vassalage
The Kingdom of Pinten is a Persistent World group that has several smaller groups that work within it. The Baro y Hedrichsbyr is one of those groups. Here is the current chain of vassalage.
The Pintish King > Baro y Hedrichsbyr > Nothing atm.
The Baro y Hedrichsbyr is sworn vassal to the King of Pinten. The Baro y Hedrichsbyr has no vassals of the feudal type. He does have a village of sorts.

How to join!
Spoiler
To join the house and barony of the Hedrich family please just fill this out and post it on the forums.
A few notes*
1. Do not ask for a high ranking position. They will be filled out according to need. There are chances of promotions so please keep that in mind. It all depends on how well you perform.
2. Your name cannot be "DerplulzHankyPanky" No that will not get you far. You must choose a North Germanic or Baltic name. Anything from Germany to Prussia will work. First names only unless you have been given that right.
3. If you are given the chance to be a high spot in society in the Kingdom of Pinten do not mess it up. Chances are not given out many times.
4. Have fun, RP your best and you can see yourself being a knight one day as the selected guard of the Baro himself. (that is a pretty good position btw. Great benefits and pay).
Okay on to the application.

Here are a few samples of my work. (And by few I mean one)

Look I know I am no Thundersnow or none of that. But just give me your honest feedback. I am trully trying my best to better myself. Just with a still broken right wrist its kind of tough to keep the lines straight.

Another part of this is I am doing all of this in paint. As my other programs don't seem to work.

    4th Systems Army Event

The 4th System Army will be hosting events on Saturday nights. The first event will be a trial and test run to see what works, what needs to be limited and what doesn't need much limiting at all.

The server is hosted by Mad Monkey Gaming and it is located in Dallas. The server runs really well. We will only be taking people up to 140 due to reasons that the mod doesnt allow for more than that without crashes. Please bear that in mind.

The event will start on Saturday at 8 Central US Standard Time. Please be in ts at least 30 minutes before.

    Rules
    Spoiler
So far these are the rules
    1. The Admin is right
    2. Do not cause problems like trolling, flamming and do not pick a fight with a regiment.
    3. Have Fun

    Battle Rules
    1. Only a maximum of Two Jedi/Sith per Legion/Regiment group. The number of Jedi/Sith will rise in the future as the legions/regiments grow of course.
    2. There will be allowed two Mandalorian Regiments allowed per battle. If this is not a problem then we will look into adding more, if it gets to be a problem then we will limit it.
    3. Jet troopers. Only 1/8th of your group can be Jet Troopers or be a Mandalorian with a Jetpack.
    4. Units must move together. No ramboing. The minimum is 3 people before having to join with another group. If you rambo you will be delt with harshly. I find you its a slay. Second offense is a ban from the night. Third means a ban from this event and next event and after that you will be banned from all future events.
    5. The only time rambo is allowed is with 5 minutes left in the event or the numbers on each team reach 10v10 or less. The admin on duty will alert the teams to when the time is right for running wild and finishing the map.
    6. Explosives: Here is my take on explosives. They played a major part in Star Wars, so I will not put a limit on them yet but use your head guys do not just run around with detpacks because if you do i will not allow them or I will limit them.
    7. Magnaguards, Magnaguards are limited to 4 per regiment. This is not negotiable because these are meant to act as a bodyguard for the Commander.

    Other Notifications
    1. Be in my teamspeak 30 minutes before the appropriate time to get information for the event.

    Medals and Awards
    Spoiler

    Army Only Awards
The Army awards are a system I do for awarding members of not only my Legion but in the Army. Should I see members of the army do something heroic they might receive one of these awards. Only the High General and his staff can give out these awards and are decided on and may not be given that night.

Medallion of Honor: The Medallion of Honor (MoH) is the highest award that soldiers can receive. To receive this award one must prove valor in a combat situation. The men who receive this honor are among the top soldiers in the army. This award is not given out lightly. It can be given posthumously if a person dies after their battle. One does not need to survive their heroic action to receive it.

Cross of Glory: The Cross of Glory (CoG) is the second highest award given by the Army. The recipient has proven constant service in and above the call of duty. They have shown valor and skill in combat and have earned this by doing something that has turned the tide of a battle in a major way.

Hero’s Cross: The Hero’s Cross (HC) or the Cross of Heroes (CoH) is the third highest medal awarded by the army. This award is for those who have dedication to being excellent in battle as well as pulled a major victory at the danger to their own personal self.

    Corps Only Awards
These are awards given on the Corps level by the leader of a corps in the army. The Corps along with the High Jedi General will see if someone has proven their worth.

Medal of Valor: The Medal of Valor (MoV) is a award given out by the army. It is a corps level medal and a Senior Jedi General can give this to a member of the corps for showing valor in battle. To receive this one must show bravery in a live fire battle and must complete a heroic action while under the cover of fire.

Chancellor’s Service Medal: The Chancellor’s Service Medal (CsM) is an award given by the army. It is a corps grade medal and can be given by a Senior Jedi General. While this is mainly an award for officers who have proven themselves worthy while leading in combat this can be applied to regular soldiers who step up in combat after their commander has fallen.

    Legion Awards
These are a list of awards that at any given time a Jedi General can give to one of his men for bravery and loyalty to the Army and his Legion.

Silver Crescent: The Silver Crescent (SC) is a award handed out by the army on the legion level. One must serve with outstanding merit in an assigned duty. The medal can be given out on a legion level to those under a command of a Jedi General. The one who receives  it has shown they are working hard to improve the entirety of their unit.

Mark of Dedication: The Mark of Dedication (MoD) is a award given out by the army at a legion level. The recipients have shown dedication to their legion as well as the army they fight for. They have gone above and beyond the call of the regular service terms and have bettered themselves and the army as a result.
All the above medals are given out on certain terms the following are given out by the High staff command to members of the army.
    Campaign Ribbons
The combat ribbons are a system to show how many events a person has attended as well as showing what campaigns they have fought in. There are three types of campaign ribbons.
    1.   The first is the “Fresh Meat Ribbon” This is awarded to every soldier upon entering combat for the first time. They will receive this award at the ceremonies if they attend or not.
    2.   The second are regular event ribbons called “Battle Ribbons” these are a ribbon that is awarded to the person upon their first battle. After that every battle gets them one dash mark on the ribbon until they  reach 7 total. After that they are given a new ribbon and it continues.
    3.   The third ribbon is for campaign events. During the special events called Campaign Events the person who attends the battle will receive the ribbon following this setup. “Planet Name Ribbon” Everytime a legion partakes in a conquest for a planet they will be given this ribbon to show what they have taken part of.
    Training Ribbons and Special Ribbons
There are other ribbons to show what a person has accomplished as well as what trainings they have received. If a person completes basic they receive a ribbon to show that they have accomplished the training. If a person undergoes ARC training then that person will receive the appropriate ribbon.
    1.   The ribbon for accomplishing and passing basic training is the “Basic Ribbon”. This ribbon is for those recruits who have passed basic and joined the ranks as a private.
    2.   The second ribbon is for those who have completed the ARC trooper training. Its called the “ARC Ribbon”. This is for those who have completed the ARC training and are in a ARC Unit.
    3.   The third ribbon is the “Jet Trooper Ribbon”. It is given for those who have completed the training for Jet Troopers.
    The other awards are.
    1.   Apprentice Marksman – Completing the shooting trials with a 50-60% Accuracy.
    2.   Expert Marksman – Completing the shooting trials with a 60-80% Accuracy.
    3.   Master Marksman – Completing the shooting trials with a 80-100% Accuracy.

    Regiments / 72nd Seaforth Highlanders (NA/EU) (Recruiting)
    « on: January 28, 2013, 05:21:48 am »

In case people have a hard time figuring things on their own and what not. I am not making a new regiment I am managing the FSE thread and Taleworlds thread for this regiment I am in. Thanks for the concern lets not get this thing locked up now.

    Background Information
The Seaforth Highlanders-Regimental District No.72-consists of the 72nd and 78th Foot.  The former date from 1778, when they were raised by the then lord Seaforth in recognition of the graceful act of the Government in restoring to him the forfeited title of his ancestors.  By a somewhat strange coincidence the first number borne by the Regiment was that of their present 2nd battalion, 78.  The first years of the regiment were somewhat tempestuous; the relations between England and the Scottish Highlanders were still somewhat strained, and each side was only too eager to allege bad faith on the part of the other.  From this feeling originated the affair of “the wild Macraes,” a sept or small clan who had enlisted under Lord Seaforth.  They refused to embark for Foreign Service, and with colours flying and pipes playing betook themselves to Arthur’s Seat, where they continued for some days in a state of ingressive mutiny.  But this was got over by a little tact, and before long the brave Highlanders marched back to their regiment with their colonel and other officers at their head.  They then set sail for India, but on the voyage out lost their Colonel-Seaforth-from illness, an occurrence that exercised a most depressing and fatal effect on his men, many of whom sickened and died.  On arriving in India they joined Stuart’s force and marched against Cuddalore, and at that place, as at Palghantchery, Savendroog and Outra Durgum, proved how valuable an acquisition the Seaforth Highlanders were to the British Army.  Palghantchery and Outra Durgum may indeed be said to have owed their capture chiefly to the “heroic ardour” of the 72nd.  At Seringapatam they were in the third column, to which was entrusted the storming of the Pagoda hill, under Colonel Maxwell, and not a little of the credit of the day is due to the dashing manner in which he carried out his plan.  They also served at Ponicherry, and in Ceylon; after which, in 1798, they returned home.

In 1805 they embarked for the Cape of Good Hope, and at the Blaw Berg in the following year suffered somewhat severely, the list of casualties including Colonels Grant and Campbell of the regiment, while Lieutenant M’Arthur and thirty men distinguished themselves by engaging and repulsing a very superior force of Dutch.  Three years later, in accordance with a “fad” of the government, the Seaforth Highlanders discontinued the wearing of the Highland costume, which, however, they have subsequently re-adopted.  After this, for again we must pass over much, the 72nd were employed in the Mauritius and in India, about the time of Waterloo being employed in South Africa.  During their sojourn here a somewhat characteristics incident occurred with the Boers.  The latter appealed to the British for aid against the Kaffirs who were making raids upon their homesteads, and accordingly Captain Gethin of the regiment with some men went to the scene of a recent disturbance.  Here a body of Kaffirs in ambush and cut to pieces surrounded them, Captain Gethin himself receiving no fewer that thirty-two wounds.  It will surprise no one who has studied the history of the Boers to learn that the people whom Gethin came to help looked placidly on while he and his gallant men of the 72nd were being butchered.  The regiment returned home in 1821, and two years after received the title of the “Duke of Albany’s Highlanders,” after the then Commander-in-Chief, his Royal Highness the Duke of York and Albany, at the same time receiving the Highland costume, only with trews instead of kilt.  Their next service was again at the Cape of Good Hope and during the operations against Macumo, the hostile Kaffir chief they greatly distinguished themselves.  After another interval of rest the Duke of Albany’s Highlanders were dispatched to the Crimea, where they arrived in May 1855, and from that date to the close of the war served in all the duties, which our troops were called upon to perform.  After the Crimea followed with deadly haste the Mutiny, where the 72nd earned lasting praise.  Their chief exploits were while serving with Sir Hugh Rose’s force in Central India, and at Kotah the fortune of war decreed that their chef opponents should be the revolted 72nd naïve regiment, whose uniform in some degree resembled that of the Duke of Albany’s.  The storming party was to abide the blowing up of the great gate, and owing to the unexpected delay in doing this found them exposed for some time to the fierce ire of the enemy.  But when the explosion was heard, and the pipes struck up their martial tune, it required but a very few minutes to capture the town, thanks to the impetuous ardour of the 72nd and their comrades, who with a ringing shout-“Scotland for ever!” literally drove all before them.  Throughout the struggles in Baroda the 72nd, who were subsequently with the Rajpootana Field Force, fought well and successfully, well meriting the unstinted meed awarded to them.  The next important campaign in which the 72nd were engaged was in the Afghanistan in 1878.  Here they were brigaded under General Roberts, and rendered most signal service at the storming of the Peiwar Kotal.  Here the 72nd and the “brave little Ghoorkas” fairly divided the honours of the day between them, though Lieutenant Munro and several rank and files were in the list of casualties.  During the march through the Sappri defile Sergeant Green gained his commission from the gallant defence he made of Captain Goad, and it it is recorded by a Scotch writer that “a sick Highlander (of the 72nd), who was being carried in a dhooley, fired all his ammunition, sixty-two rounds, at the enemy, and as he was a good marksman, he never fired without getting a fair shot.”

The following year they were still more actively employed, and round and about Cabul, under Roberts, came in for much more fierce fighting, from which they gained a full sheaf of honours.  Sergeant MacDonald, Cox, and M’Ilvean distinguished themselves at the assault of the Takt-I-Shah; Lieutenant Ferguson was twice wounded; Sergeant Jule (who was killed the next day) was the first man to gain the ridge, capturing at the same time two standards.  Corporal Sellars, the first man to gain the top of the Asmai heights, gained a Victoria Cross; before that day’s sun had set Captain Spens and Lieutenant Gainsford of the regiment had fallen fighting like heroes to the last; Lieutenant Egerton was badly wounded, and several rank and file put hors de combat.  The regiment fought well in the attack on Sherpur, and in Robert’s famous march to Candahar were brigaded with the Gordon highlanders and 60th Rifles.  In the attack on Candahar Sir Frederick reported that “the 72nd and the 2nd Sikhs had the chief share of the fighting;” of the second brigade Colonel Brownlow, Captain Frowe and Sergeant Cameron were among the killed; Captain Stewart Murray and Lieutenant Munroe were badly wounded.  In 1881 the regiment resumed the kilt, adopting the Mackenzie tartan, and were engaged in the Egyptian war of the following year, when they served with Macpherson’s Indian Contingent; under Colonel Stockwell they brilliantly inaugurated their campaign by the capture of Chalouffe.  At Tel-el-Kebir they were leading on the extreme left, “advancing steadily and in silence until an advanced battery of the enemy was reached, when it was gallantly stormed by the Highlaners” (Sir G. Wolseley’s Dispatch), and after this they pursued the flying enemy and occupied the important town of Zagazig.  Their losses were very slight, two men killed and three wounded, owing “to the excellent arrangements made by General Macpherson,” and to the fact that the earlier attacks had so shaken the enemy that they could not withstand “the impetuous onslaught of the Seaforth Highlanders.”

The 2nd battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders, consisting of the 78th regiment, the Ross-shire Buffs, also owes its existence to the loyal family of Seaforth, being raised in 1793 by the then head of the clan.  Their first service was under the Earl of Chatham in the disastrous Walcheren Expedition, after which they took part in the campaign in Holland under the Duke of York.  The value of the service rendered by the Highlanders during the terrible retreat to Bremen has been before mentioned; at Gildermalsen, however, the 78th ran a somewhat serious risk.  “A regiment of the enemy’s hussars, dressed in a uniform similar to that worn by the Emigirant regiment of the Duke de Choiseul in our service, pushed on, treacherously shouting ‘Choiseul!’ and got close to the 78th Highlanders undiscovered.”  They were however repulsed by some scathing volleys from the Black Watch.  The 78th reserved for a time at Cape of Good hope, and in 1797 were ordered to India, where they gained the first of their many distinctions.  Under Wellesley they assisted in the capture of the strong town of Ahmednughur, and under the immediate command of the same great leader fought with splendid courage at Assaye; they were on the left of the first line, and at the close of the day were led forward by Wellesley in person to clear out the village, which they did at the point of the bayonet after some desperate fighting.  They fought at Argaum, and in 1811 were with the forces under Sir Samuel Achmuty in the operations in Java.  On returning home they experienced the misfortune which our troops seem so often to have suffered namely, that of being shipwrecked; the reports at the time speak in the most energetic terms of the courage and endurance displayed by the 78th, of whom, fortunately, not a man was lost.  But the regiment had been reaping its harvest of honour in the West as well as in the East.  Under Stuart they had been serving in Sicily, and are amongst the regiments whose colours bear the name “Maida.”  The record of the regiment narrates that the aspect of the regiment caused the general some apprehension; they looked so very young; quite six hundred of their number were under twenty-one.  But there was nought of weakness or youthful instability in that splendid charge they made, led by their gallant Colonel, Patrick Macleod.  Opposed to them was the French 42nd regiment of Grenadiers, led by a brave and skilful commander.  But commander and troops alike were hurled back by the 78th.  The retreat became a headlong flight, and so far did the Highlanders with fierce slaughter pursue the flying foe that an aide-de-camp was sent to bid them halt.  “At the moment the order was delivered to Macleod he was incapable of speech, and was stooping from his horse on the shoulder of a sergeant of his regiment; a rifle ball had passed through his breast within an inch of the heart, inflicting a painful and perilous wound;” yet he never quitted his saddle or the field, but remained at the head of his Ross-shire Buffs during the remainder of the battle and the long pursuit that followed it.  Again and again they charged during that day, and no regiment more nobly acquitted itself.  In 1807 they fought in Egypt and gained undying fame at the disastrous conflict at El Hamet.  Colonel Macleod with one company of the regiment and some of the 35th were surrounded and assailed by an overwhelming force.  The colonel was killed; “there also fell Lieutenant Macrae with six more of his name; Sergeant John Macrae slew seven assailants with his claymore before his head was cloven from behind.  Of Macleod’s detachment, consisting of two hundred and seventy-five, all were killed to thirty, of whom fifteen only were unwounded.”  Strangely enough two of the prisoners of the 78th rose to high eminence in the land of their capacity.  Ibrahim Aga, the famed governor of Medina and one of the Sultan’s most able generals, was Private Thomas Keith on that dreadful day when his officers and comrades fell around him in El Hamet; Osman, “the learned leech” of Alexandria, who acquired a large practice and a larger fortune, was a drummer boy in the 78th, whose medical training had been limited to assisting the regimental surgeon to tie bandages and mix medicines.

The Ross-shire Buffs have ‘Persia’ and ‘Khoosh-ab’ on their colours, words which recall their conduct in a campaign in which they earned a very high encomium from Sir Henry Havelock: they “behaved remarkably well at the battle of Koosh-ab, and during the Naval action on the Euphrates and the landing, their steadiness, zeal, and activity were conspicuous.  They never seemed to complain of anything, but that they had no further chance of meeting the enemy.  I am convinced that the regiment would be second to none in the service if their military qualities were drawn forth; they are proud of their colours, their tartan, and their former high achievements.”  On the night preceding the battle of Khoosh-ab, the enemy attempted a surprise on our forces, but thanks to steadiness and discipline, the only result was to somewhat lessen the number of the morrow’s assailants.  During this midnight attack the 78th were exposed to a somewhat bewildering ruse on the part of the Persians, one of whose buglers had learned the “calls” in our service, and repeatedly sounded “cease firing” close to the Ross-shires-fortunately, however, he entirely failed to mislead them.  When the mutiny broke out “the high military qualities” of the regiment were called forth with a vengeance, and the result proved how admirably General Havelock had gauged the calibre of the corps.  We shall not attempt to follow seriatim the services the 78th rendered throughout the Mutiny; these services are matter of history, and will be recalled whenever the Indian Mutiny is mentioned.  They were with Havelcok in his march to relieve Cawnpore and Lucknow; marching in eight days a hundred and twenty-six miles, fighting four battles, and capturing a score of guns.  As is sadly well known the force arrived too late at Cawnpore, despite their heroic efforts and splendid victories, and the terrible sight that met their eyes- mangled bodies, torn clothing, children’s little frocks and toys, tresses of long hair torn out by the roots, all be dabbled with blood-lives yet, an awful memory.  Not many years before, a poet had put into the lips of a singer of old Rome the String couplet which spoke of       “The inexpiable wrong, the unutterable shame    That turns the coward’s heart to steel, the sluggard’s blood to flame”

There were neither cowards nor sluggards in this band of heroes, and men told at the time how the Ross-shire Buffs, finding amongst the blood-boltered debris a tress of black hair torn from the head of one of poor, murdered General Wheeler’s daughters, divided it amongst their number, each vowing, like the knight of Snowdon, to stain it deep in rebel blood.  Splendidly did they fight at the Alumbagh, when, at last, Lucknow was taken.  A countryman, each having for its hero a piper of the 78th, records two incidents.  In one case the piper was wounded and a couple of his comrades were carrying him off, when they saw, to their dismay, a rebel trooper approaching with drawn sword.  The position was critical, but the piper was equal to the occasion; “going through the ordinary manoeuvres of loading a gun he lifted the longest shank of his pipes to is shoulder and pointed it at the Sepoy’s head.”  As a result the latter “turned tail and ran off.”  On another occasion-the capture of Lucknow- a piper found himself alone, lost in the tortuous streets, with gun discharged and bayonet unfixed.  “To him enter,” round a sudden corner, one of the rebel cavalry, who forth with made at him.  Whatever views may be with held of the relative merits of sword and bayonet, there can be but opinion as to the superiority of the former when the latter is not fixed.  The days of the brave 78th mad seemed numbered.  “Suddenly,” he wrote, “a bright idea struck me; all at once I seized my pipe, put it in my mouth, and gave forth a shrill note which so startled the fellow that he bolted like a shot, evidently imagining it was some infernal machine; so my pipe saved my life.”           The 78th gained to many of those crosses inscribed “For Valour” for us to be able to do more than quote some of the circumstances.  Private James Hollowell, 78th Highlanders, received the Victoria Cross for conduct officially described as follows: -           “A party on the 26th September, 1857, was shut up and besieged in a house in the city of Lucknow by the rebel Sepoys.  Private James Hollowell, one of the party, behaved throughput the day in the most admirable manner; he directed, encouraged, and led the others, exposing himself fearlessly, and by his talent in persuading and cheering, prevailed on nine desperate men to take a successful defence in a burning house, with the enemy firing through the windows.”            “Assistant surgeon Valentine Munbee M’Master, 78th Highlanders, was recommended for the Victoria Cross for the intrepidity with which he exposed himself to the fire of the enemy in bringing in and attending to the wounded on the 25th September, at Lucknow.  He had served in the Persian War and in all Havelock’s operations for the succour of the Residency.  After arriving at the latter place he accompanied many sorties and was wounded.  He was with out ram’s force at the Alumbagh, and took part in the Rohileund campaign.”

    Companies in the 72ndSH

The 72nd Seaforth Highlanders has several Companies and Battalions of soldiers. 1st Battalion is that of regular line infantry and riflemen while 2nd Battalion is comprised of the guard units.

While Colonel Griffin commands the entire group each Battalion is commanded by a sub officer to ensure the units full potential as well as discipline.

    1st Battalion
Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion: Lieutenant Colonel Klaus
    Companies
A Company - Line Infantry Regulars
    B Company - Riflemen

    2nd Battalion
Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion: Captain Branok
    Companies
    A Company - Irish Guards
Cavalry Troop - Horse Guards, Scots Greys

    The Units Broken Down

    Regular Line Infantry
The regular line infantry, the backbone of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders. This is where everyone starts out. Even if you join in hopes of being in a specialized unit you must go through this phase as we do not always bring rifles or cavalry into battle. This way you understand fully all line infantry tactics and formations in the situation that we need you in it.

    Riflemen
The riflemen are those who have proven they are excellent shots with a musket and have earned the privilege of using a rifle in battle. As skirmishers it is their role in battle to harass enemy lines, artillery and the lot. They use loose formations in battle and are a deadly force if used right.

    Guard Infantry
The guard infantry line, also known in short as the Irish Guards is the elite unit as far as line infantry go. This unit has a age restriction and is the forefront of the battlefield. The shock troop and is considered the most disciplined of the unit. A lot try out but not as many make it. If you are in the foot guards you are not necessarily in the horse guard.

    Guard Cavalry
The Horse Guard or also known as the Scots Greys are a horse guard unit specialized in cavalry tactics. They are used in flanking operations on the battlefield. They also are used to chase routing units so the battle can end. When you are in the Scots Greys you are also in the foot guard and expected to know both cavalry and line infantry tactics.
