Southern generals were much better than northern generals and nobody actually debates that. Majority of Westpoint's best joined the Confederacy. The reason the North won the major battles was because of sheer numbers and railroad transportation was made easier for the North by more industry/manufacturing. Many of those big battles had the South heavily outnumbered. Ex.: Gettysburg had 95k union soldiers engaged while the Confederates only had 70k men engaged.
And yes I realize I'm arguing about civil war history on an fse forum.
