That might be because the rank of Company Serjeant Major wasn't introduced in to the British army until just before the 1st world war

It's tricky because at company level the only non-commissioned officers (there were some exceptions but as a general rule) were Corporal and Sergeant with Colour Sergeant (introduced in 1813) denoting the most senior Sergeant in the company. This is probably the most equivalent rank but there were numerous other sergeants at a battalion level - Armourer Sgt, Quatermaster Sgt, Pay Sgt, School Sgt (from 1810) and Sgt Major ofc
