The brass of the Old Guard never surrenders, i.e. the 1er Grenadiers and Chasseurs. The 2e didn't surrender either, but they did break and retreat, although the 1-4e Grenadiers and Chasseurs were officially 'Old Guard' during previous campaigns only the 1er was considered ' Old Guard ' Thus the rest should be ranked as ' Middle Guard '. Additionally the Guard like the rest of the french ar,y was in a terrible state ( As you'll find in several french and Prussian accounts, rarely do the British ones tell the truth ) yet the 1er withdrew in squares and routed several British dragoon squadrons.
The Old Guard Infantry Never Surrendered, period. Although the Guard Dragoons and Horse Chasseurs had a few blunders, the Horse Grenadiers and Guard Lighthorse Lancers never lost a single combat, infact the Horse Grenadiers were surrounded by Russian Hussars and Cossacks during the 1807 campaign, and when asked if they wished to surrender the reply was " Take a look at these faces, does it look like these men want to surrender?
