The World war 1 trenches

so your favorite battles is all of WWI?  ???
Well WWI is all one big battle.

in that sense every war is one big battle :P they had different fronts, the western front and the eastern front, the Dardanelles etc
No war prior to WWI was constant, bloody fighting. Most wars before WWI had 3-4 big battles every year and that number is lower the further back you go,

Culloden, which is probably a little know battle outside the British isles.

Having followed the 45 Jacobite rising up and down, the battle was a truly one sided horrendous affair.

World War I
  • Meuse-Argonne Offensive – Lost Battalion
  • Battle of Verdun
World War II
  • Battle of Warsaw (1939)
  • Battle of France (1940)
  • Battle of Leningrad
  • Battle of Stalingrad
  • Battle of Kursk
  • Battle of Caen
  • Operation Market Garden
  • D-Day
  • Battle of the Bulge
  • Battle of Berlin (1945)
  • Battle of Okinawa
  • Battle of Guadalcanal
  • Battle of Seelow Heights
  • Battle of Athens
  • Battle of Tobruk
  • First & Second Battle of El Alamein

I've read that some of these battles were not decisive quick operations within 1-3 days, but were over an extended period of time across wide fronts. So, this could really just refer to specific phases of the war. (Obviously some were quick, but a lot of those change the very idea of what a battle really is)

The first time I ever read about that battle I thought I was reading the script of an unreleased Monty Python episode.

All my life I’ve been fearful of defeat. But now that it has come it’s not near as terrible as I’d expected. The sun still shines, water still tastes good…glory is all well and good but life is enough, nay?

It cool because I'm going to be a Beaumont Hamel on the 1st of July with cadets due to the 100th anniversary of the battle of the Somme :)
