Title: What Period/s Do you do
Post by: zac on January 16, 2014, 10:33:51 am
Basically a clear place for people entering the forum to see what era's people do here. Easier to ask questions etc

We had something up here a while back, but seems to have been lost in the traffic, This is for the new people etc

Not really, It was an industrial war just like the rest of the wars in that period. The only difference is where it took place. I suggest you to put them together at once like this;

I'm with Wismar here; there's a reason shit like that is split in to era's.

Wismar, why are you even making a point out of this? You're not even a re-enactor. Joseph, same thing.

The ACW is so big that mixing it with the little groups that to Crimea or Franco-Prussian war is just a ridiculous suggestion. There's not even a single person here who does anything Victorian, perhaps maybe Zac himself. Besides, you can't possibly compare the events, uniforms, battles or tactics of the Civil war with anything Victorian, which by the way is far too broad to be a good re-enactor term. It makes kind of a difference whether you Crimea or Franco-prussian - About 20 years, to be exact.

It's the same thing when Americans claim their war of 1812 was part of the Napoleonic wars. Hell no.

-.-

There's wasn't one way of tactics during the victorian era, I never said that. ACW was a part of the evolution of warfare during the victorian era. It would just make more sense to put it there.
Just beacause you go and pretent to shoot at some kids and elders (sorry, any other reenactors out there) doesn't mean you know more than me.

I don't have a gun, you silly goose! I use a sabre! I'm light cavalry. Tsss tss tss.

The 'Victorian' era is far to broad to be good re-enactment term, it's just that all European wars during that time-period are re-enacted so little, it's just shoved under one roof. It's like saying World war 1 and 2 are the same period. If you'd put ACW under Victorian era, it would be split up between >95% ACW and <5% other periods. I'm not pretending to know more about it, but I to like to think I know more about the habits of re-enactors.

Recently started reenacting as a Napoleonic Dutch sailor. Might switch to the marines detachment later on, I'm still on trial.

Well, the marines used 1813 styled shakos instead of their 1797 style bicornes at the battle of the Veluwezoom in december.
Title: Re: What Period/s Do you do
Post by: Duuring on January 16, 2014, 10:58:38 pm
There were no marines in 1813. They use 1807 Kingdom Holland shakos, with the very distinct anchor-insignia and red-black plume on the side.

Two of my greatgrandfathers were in the AEF. One was an artillery truck driver and the other was a machinegunner. So I'd love to do American, but I already do Württemberg. :c

I may just put together a uniform for my greatgrandpa that was the machinegunner and started out in the 3rd Arkansas National Guard until it was made into some unit I constantly have to research to remember.

Well, my family during WWII didn't do anything crazy. My grandpa was an air traffic controller at the Chico airport in CA, my grandma traced blueprints of the P-38 Lightning for Lockheed, and one of my granduncles was on a cruiser in the pacific near the end of the war - so he saw kamikaze attacks and whatnot, but those were always aimed at carriers.

My family just had a shit-time. Cos war is shit. Especially if you happen to find yourself in a colony that gets 'freed' by the Japanese. Not something that's up for re-enactment, really  :P

Voting was hard decision to make. Especially I like uniforms, equipment, weapons, ranks, units etc. from all periods but medieval, Napoleonic, Civil War,  first and second world war was the closest to me. But I'm actually not supposed to be in this thread, because there isn't many reenactments at my country, even I would wan't to join.

Then why vote? If you're not a reenact or and don't portray anything, then your vote is just skewing the actual number of reenactors who put time, money, and research into making the dream a reality. Honestly, unless you're looking to get in on reenacting, just go browse another sub-forum.

Have to agree a bit with Landrik. While I've no trouble and even love having all sorts of people around it, re-enactors or people who are just interested in the hobby, voting on what you re-enact while you don't re-enact is a bit...off  :P

Yeah, that's why I didn't vote. What I do is more Fantasy role play (larp) than reenactment to be honest.

Now that I'm sword-fighting regularly, my brother is trying to get me to do some monstering in his LARP stuff.

God knows how that'll go, though. I'm a middling fighter at best and I'm likely to be fighting off far more chaotic attacks than I'm used to.

Eh, I don't fight very often, but people hate when I take out a spear! I can keep 5 guys busy while my buddy chops them up one at a time.

If I get a sword in my hand I am literally the dirtiest fighter on the field.

Feel bad going back on topic!
Napoleonic Wars: 3rd Battalion 95th Rifles
And on occasion we have been known to become French for a day when we become le 95th (a hybrid french unit with habites but rifles and green trousers
And a couple of times we have been known to become confederates to boost their numbers!

Oh hell no!

Good thing about our greatcoats is they're grey ;) so from a distance we can just about pass as confederate

Actually I think it's the same thing. The confederates received British equipment and uniform material. So you'd be pretty accurate!

Just to spice things up a bit we use our flintlocks as well, I think that also happened didn't it? there were some flintlocks used in the ACW
Best transfer were some Union soldiers fighting as French against us one event. We nicknamed them the smurf brigade

Lol smurf brigade. Flintlock was used by confederate militia or volunteer during early war indeed. Mostly Kentucky long rifles or sporting rifles. Baker rifles would been quite a luxury to have.

haha if I could find the pictures of them you'd see why, they looked like smurfs, to the point where we would walk onto the battlefield singing the smurf song as they advanced towards us!

First event of the season this weekend, spent most of the day polishing and cleaning my babies, Valyria and Dany (guess where those names are from :P) I'll see if I can post a pic up of them at some point, they're purdy

My 1st ID, 2nd Marines, East plus West Confederate kit, Western federal kit, Late war heer, and now working on my viking kit. Straight out my pocket.

Are we talking Allgemeine-SS? Because the all black uniforms do look really dumb.

As for Waffen-SS i think they just look a bit more unique to the Heer ones, with the various insignia and cuff titles. There isn't really much of a difference though. I do like the 1944 peadot camos quite a lot though.

And sorry, i'm not a re-enactor, don't hurt me pls.

I used to do English Civil War (Yes, we had one first) and World War 2.

I was on an Artillery crew in the Civil War side, and loved it.  Except when we had to drag the damned thing off the field at Detling 2006 before the next display.

For WW2 I was part of a small group portraying British Para-Recce (The poor sods who got ambushed at Arnhem/Wolfheze)

I wanna go as Finnish soldier and skin me some commies like duuring :D

Sadly I don't do Winter nor Continuation war. I don't like getting my brains blown out from 25 kilometer away.

I wouldn't say that they are less fun to shoot than flintlocks.

And they almost never misfire + on high winds the powder doesn't fly in your face when opening the pan.

What's life without a little explosion in your face when you fire.

I respectfully disagree, Flintlock does not have enough freedom IMO.

Springfield Flintlock do have little freedom but compared to M1 Garand who have seen the world.

It brought freedom to Western Europe, North Africa, South America, Japan, Korea, South Pacific, and finally Vietnam. What a epic Freedom World Tour it was.

The fun is the delay of the shot and the powder flying in your face. Its all apart of the experience.

Ah I remember my very first shot, when I accidentally pourred half of the cartridge in my pan and having a mininuke hit me in the face a moment later. Good times.

Or heavy wind... All the powder you add to the pan is gone immedietly.
Wind while igniting is even worse, you are guaranteed to get some burnmarks.

Its awesome!

AH yes, had that last week on saturday. Wind kept blowing out of my pan before the sparks could ignite it.

I know a fellow that had a cartridge in his hand while firing and it caught and went up in his face, burning his brow off. Another rev war reenactor had a powder horn filled to the brim and it caught a spark. The thing blew sky high in a loud bang.

I've been into Medieval Reenactment (primarily 13th century) for over a year now, and it's been bloody fantastic.
I was practically brought up with it, with my Dad having done it since he was about 17, but it's only been since 2013 that I've taken to the battlefield myself!

I currently don't have the cash to drop on the few Matchlocks I see for sale; so I am using a Pike and cuirass until I can find a well priced Matchlock.

Mainly Union infantry, with Confederate infantry portrayals from time to time. As I get more funds I personally would like to do Franco-Prussian war (1870) (too forgotten period in European history), American Revolution, and 7 Years War (probably mainly American theater).

Franco Prussian is interesting. I wouldn't say it's forgotten, it's in school curriculums all around the world. The Franco Prussian War is argued as the beginning of the feud between Germany and France that eventually developed into the First World War. The end of the war created the Weimar Republic and the French Third Republic. I think for that reason it's not forgotten.
