Русскоязычный форум / Wanted: Russian Board Moderator
« on: November 07, 2014, 12:16:55 am »
Howdy folks,

It's been brought to our attention that the Russian board needs a moderator. In the interests of fairness to the Russian NW community, we've decided to open the applications up to the Russian-speaking community as a whole.

Position requirements:

 - You must speak good Russian and understandable English
 - You must be knowledgeable of the forum rules, and happy to enforce them
 - You must be active enough to respond to incidents as they arise

To apply for the position, send me a PM with the following template:

Subject: Russian Board Moderator Application

Message Body:

Code
Russian Language Ability:
English Language Ability:

Experience (if any):

Estimate of activity (hours per week):

Why you'd like the position:

Previous experience is a benefit, but not required.

The application process will run for approximately one week, at which point I'll collect the results and the applicants will be discussed internally.

Good luck!

Regards,

Blob

Regiments / 100-Page Thread Cap
« on: October 14, 2014, 01:30:04 am »
Due to increased strain on the servers, all regiment threads will be capped at 100 pages, at which point they will be locked by the moderation staff. Please feel free to make a new thread if your own has been locked for this reason. If anyone needs the content of their Original Post made available for a new thread, please contact a moderator and we'll provide the BB code version for you.

Thank you for your co-operation,

Blobmania,
Senior Moderator

The change was done for performance reasons.

I can assure you the box the webserver is running on is one of the fastest in the market, however a many page topic, is straining it at lot, let me explain why.

Whenever a person opens a topic, the database is asked to locate all posts in the posts table (millions) that are with topicID x.
After It fetched these details and stored in memory, you can imagine if you have 100+ pages, think about 500 pages, then there are thousands of posts fetched and stored in memory.
When it has gathered this information it is going to filter this data according to what page you are watching... then send this information to your computer.

The sad truth is that whenever you open a big page topic, reply to it, whatever, every page load is bumping the MySQL database process to 100% CPU for a good second.. mind you that is on a latest Intel Xenon CPU..

Topics with 100 pages, are in my opinion a good limit, they take significantly less CPU load..

Except CPU, the memory usage will be less and overall the site will perform faster..

The problems with remaking your topic were unintended, please send a message to a moderator or me to send you your topic start post contents.

I understand not everyone loves this change, but believe me, it is for the better to keep everything running smooth.

We are running BCOF test, NW Servers, BCOF development stuff and the Forums on the same machine.
We can not afford to have constant spikes, which you will not notice when visiting the forums, because they are just that, very short spikes, but we do notice when testing BCOF.

Capping the pages to 100 prevents most of these CPU spikes. Unless you donate us 1440 euro each year, so we can host the forums on a separate server, it will stay as it is. We do not have the money to pay for it on our own.

Hey there guys,

Just writing to inform you all that I will be stepping down as a Senior Moderator and joining the ranks of the regular forumites. I'm no longer able to put the time into the forums that I used to, and I firmly believe that the community deserves staff who are as dedicated and active in their jobs as you all are to the game (and to these forums). As such I have chosen to step aside to allow some new blood to join the Moderation team and hopefully grow into the position that I no longer have the time to fill.

As of this moment McEwanMaster is the most senior Forum Moderator, and any concerns or questions (and name change requests!) can be directed to him. To bolster the ranks of the Moderation staff we are bringing in a new moderator on a trial basis, Apollo, and I'm sure you'll show him the respect that his new position deserves.

As moderators we always held ourselves to a high standard, and I am confident that the remaining moderators will continue to maintain those standards in my absence. It has been an absolute pleasure not only to work alongside such an active and thoughtful team, but also to work with and get to know so many of you community members since the Forums were established. You're a wonderful bunch (if a bit frustrating at times!), and I wish you all the best of luck in continuing to grow and develop as a community.

Regards,

The Mess Hall / A recent look into Politics

Hello there forumites!

I have recently returned from an excursion to the Brain-Slug embassy on Embassy Street in Blobtopia, the Blobdominican capitol. The Brain-Slugs are a lower form of being than us Blobs, but they have their uses. Anyhow, I took a piccy!

As you can see, I had a wonderful time. Stay tuned for more Blobdominica Diaries!

Community / Community Representative Programme Termination
« on: July 29, 2013, 10:01:51 pm »
Greetings community,

After lengthy discussion with both the Community and other staff members, we have reached a final conclusion on the subject of the Community Representative programme, and its implementation on the forums in general.

While we appreciate all the work that the representatives have done and acknowledge their achievements in giving community input at a time when a large number of people were dissatisfied with some community issues, we've come to believe that the representative roles themselves are now ill-suited for the more stable situation our community finds itself in and so plan on phasing out the Community Representative positions over the next few weeks.

Forum users may still continue to discuss issues in the "NW Community General Discussion" thread (which will remain stickied on this board), but any individual community issues from henceforth should be directed to a member of the senior Server or Forum staff (A list of which will be posted shortly). As per usual, any suggestions for the BCoF/NW or the Forums should be posted in their designated subforums.

Thank you to the Community Representatives for the time that you've invested into the community, your input was invaluable in determining the best course of action for the community over the past few months.

We still plan on implementing many of the concluded (but unpublished) discussions from the House of Commons board, so there's no need to worry if you'd still like to see some of those motions put into place despite the lack of the Representative position from now onwards.
