Historical Discussion / Mystery of the Week: The Vela Incident
« on: December 06, 2013, 12:15:11 am »
Recently discovered this, I am rather intrigued by what I have read, but now the question is, could this be true or was it a hoax? Browsed the forums and many people argue yes / no. So I wondered why not start a discussion here about it.

Keep it civil now!

The Red Guards in Russia had a long revolutionary tradition. As far back as the revolutionary days of 1906 the Russian working classes formed their own fighting units in the factories, whereupon the victorious counterrevolution discovered that one of its chief tasks would have to be the disarmament of the workers and the destruction of these units. But the workers re-established their defence forces or ‘Red Guards’ during the February Revolution of 1917.

The development of these Red Guards was at first hindered by the fact that the Soviets were still dominated by the influence of the Menshevists and Social Revolutionaries. These parties were of opinion that the Revolution must not be allowed to destroy the framework of bourgeois democracy, for they feared that in view of Russia’s backwardness and the general international situation any transformation of the democratic into a socialist revolution was bound to be disastrous. They thought this would lead to a reactionary movement and the ultimate victory of the militarist-monarchist counter-revolutionaries.

On February 28, 1917, the general meeting of the Petrograd Workers’ and Soldiers’ Soviets was led in a first flush of enthusiasm to vote for the establishment of a ‘workers’ militia.’ But several days later, on March 7, the executive committee of the Soviets suspended this resolution, and issued a decree whereby the workers’ militia was compelled to amalgamate with the ordinary citizen militia. The enforcement of this decree assured to the bourgeoisie the control of the unified militia, and the separate militia of the workers ceased to exist as an independent class organization of the proletariat.

The military organization of the Bolshevists, which had hitherto been mainly employed in work amongst the troops, was now quickly transformed into a directing centre for the activities of the workers’ militia or Red Guards. The first period of the Red Guards’ illegal existence is described by M. G. Fleer, a prominent member of the Petrograd military organization:

“The Red Guard organizations which were not in close contact with the party, such for example, as the armed workers’ units in the factories, were comparatively easy to camouflage, for they needed only to play the part of factory militia formations officially entrusted with the task of defending the factory buildings. These legal duties gave the workers’ militia scope for much activity. We must not forget that the factories were glad to pay for the maintenance of this factory militia before becoming aware of its real nature, since they felt themselves safer under the protection of their ‘own’ workers than under that of the citizen militia, which could not enforce any authority over the factory hands. The proletarian factory militias soon became a general and inevitable phenomenon in the factories of Petrograd, Moscow, and all other centres of Russian industry.”

The Red Guards then gave themselves a constitution of a purely military nature, which divided them into decads, corporals’ squads, companies, etc., along with special technical units, such as dynamiters, cyclists, telegraphists, machine-gunners, artillerymen, and so on. The smallest fighting unit of the Red Guard was the decad, which consisted of 13 men. Four decads formed a corporal’s squad (53 men), three corporals’ squads a company (160 men), three companies a battalion, consisting of 480 men, plus technical units which made the total strength from 500 to 600; all the battalions of a district formed the district division, which, if numerous enough, was subdivided into regiments. After the Korniov putsch the Red Guards in Moscow and the other Russian industrial centres were legalized and armed by the same procedure as in Petrograd.

The Red Guards were equal to their task of defending the new Soviet homeland until the counter-revolutionaries coalesced and sent properly organized troops against them. But the Guards, mainly drawn from the towns and industrial centres, were found wanting as a defence for the dictatorship of the proletariat when called upon to face attacks by White armies consisting of regulars. Yet, as the Historical Section of the War Academy notes, they acted in the first months of the Civil War as “the shield of the Russian proletariat against the enemy operations of foreign and native counter-revolutionaries. Using them as a basis, the Soviet homeland began to build up its armed forces, and the first fighting formations of the Red Army were grouped round the Red Guard divisions.”

The Red Guards are a fun, non-serious clan who engage in one event a week, as artillery for now. Until the amount of members increase the consideration of a switch to Cavalry > Skirms > Line might be considered. Our ranks are simple and they simply reflect on how long you have been part of the clan. Anyone can lead in the Red Guards, but you will not always be allowed to, but we will see. You can be in multiple regiments at once, like I said, this is just for fun, no serious regimental politics in here please. You come and go as you please, you are not required to come to the event. We play once, every friday in the 5th FKI Friday linebattle at 7 GMT. We prize friendship over everything, and members are usually a band of friends who want to do something on a Friday evening. Our TS is 5.9.82.165:9990

Polkovnik (Polk)

Kapitan (Kpt)

Mladshiy Sergant(MS)

   Krasnoarmeets (Kras)

The Polkovnik is the "leader" of the clan, it translates to Colonel in Russian. this position also made it into New Regiments of the streltsy and later into the new army of Peter the Great. The rank was legalized by Table of Ranks that placed it in the 6th grade as the second-top field officer, right under the brigadier. A promotion to the rank of polkovnik gave a privilege of hereditary nobility.
The Red Army reintroduced the polkovnik rank in 1935, together with a number of other former Russian ranks, and it has been used in many ex-USSR countries, including Russia, to the present day.

The Kapitan is the second in command and he usually takes command after the Polkovnik has is absent or has been sadly killed in the field.

The Mladshiy Sergeant is a member who has been in the clan for over 1 month, and it is translated to "Junior Sergeant" in Russian.

The Krasnoarmeets is a member who has recently joined the Red Guards, it translates to "Private" in Russian, and they are the most important part of the clan, as they form the backbone of its body.

It has always annoyed me to see people with these tiny avatars, and to be honest its hard to read avatars of people who put text on it or memes. The Avatar sizes on TaleWorlds (for example) are good.

So I am simply requesting an increase in Profile Image sizes.

The Rejenorst Fan Boys Club

"Rejaism does not pursue the denunciation of pre-existing religions but encourages the notion of ignoring their existence. A man's spiritual

journey is between him and his God and can only be shared amongst accepting like minded individuals. It is widely believed that a great

thunderbolt from the ban clouds will smite those that engage in the futility of religious denunciations for the sake of argument. The act of

arguing over religion usually involves two sides arguing complete opposites of the spectrum in an attempt to dislode fundemental or core

beliefs from one or more individuals or groups. In most cases such groups argue against all odds in favor of an intangible and imeasurable

omnipotent presence or set of codes, or are attempting to use physical forms of measurment to determine the non-existence of a spiritual force and vice versa.

Attempting to dislodge such ideas or beliefs for either side in any such manner is as effective as the ridicule it prompts from both sides over

the complete lack of understanding of reality from either perspective.

Clans / Al Yihali Tribe [Persistent Empire]
« on: May 27, 2013, 05:30:43 pm »

"Do you see a space of the span of a hand on my leg, chest, arm which is not covered by some scar of the wound of a sword or an arrow or a lance? -Khalid Ibn Walid

The Al Yihali Tribe was a elite group of warriors who hail from Persia fighting for the Muslim cause during the Byzantine-Arab wars and the Crusades.

They trace their ancestry from  the days of the Christ, they stayed in their belief of Paganism and fought any new religion which threatened their way of life, until Khalid Ibn Walid sent by the orders of Abu Baker, the Caliphate at the time with an army of 18,000 men to conquer Persia. The Al Yihali were defeated with a group of other tribes and joined the Muslim Empire. Ever since their defeat they have proven to be worthy warriors in the army.

The tribe is now lead by Hassan Al Yihali, a well known fighter and strong muslim, will he and his men be able to defend their lands from the many enemies they face? Will they be able to make a way to safety through politics and diplomacy in a time where war is the path everyone wishes to take?

We are a clan who wish to have fun in the new Persistent Empires mod for Warband, we focus on having fun and not seriousness 24/7 but we do not accept complete foolery all the time, and always stick to the rules. We prefer to play as the Saracen faction, although if the majority wish to play as another faction we could do so later on, but we keep the names and traditions and our code. Have fun! And thanks for reading!

Here are some rules you must always follow. (These are the clan rules)

War is permitted when:
  • In self defence
  • When other nations have attacked an Islamic state
  • If another state is oppressing its own people

War should be conducted:
  • In a disciplined way
  • So as to avoid injuring non-combatants
  • With the minimum necessary force
  • Without anger
  • With humane treatment towards prisoners of war
  • Do not commit treachery or deviate from the right path.
  • You must not mutilate dead bodies.
  • Neither kill a child, nor a woman, nor an aged man.
  • Bring no harm to the trees, nor burn them with fire, especially those which are fruitful. (Hehehe)
  • Slay not any of the enemy's flock, save for your food.
  • You are likely to pass by people who have devoted their lives to monastic services; leave them alone

These are the rights that Islam confers on combatants:

  • No one should be burned alive or tortured with fire.
  • Wounded soldiers who are neither unfit to fight, nor actually fighting, should not be attacked.
  • Prisoners of war should not be killed.
  • It is prohibited to kill anyone who is tied up or in captivity.
  • Residential areas should not be pillaged, plundered or destroyed, nor should the clan members touch the property of anyone except those who are fighting against them.
  • Clan members must not take anything from the general public of the conquered country without paying for it.
  • The corpses of the enemy must not be disgraced or mutilated.
  • Corpses of the enemy should be returned.
  • Treaties must not be broken.
  • Clan members are prohibited from opening hostilities without properly declaring war against the enemy, unless the adversary has already started aggression against them.

It is required to use a Arabic name with [Al Yihali] at the end.
