Off Topic / The Last Kingdom (BBC)
« on: July 22, 2016, 05:04:24 am »
Just started watching this yesterday. Feels almost better than Game of Thrones, not actually but it's really good. And on Netflix.

The Last Kingdom is a British television series, an eight-part adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s historical novels series The Saxon Stories.[1] The series premiered on 10 October 2015 on BBC America, and on BBC Two in the UK on 22 October 2015. A second series of ten episodes has been announced for a 2016 release.[2]

As a child, Uhtred witnessed his father being killed and the Saxon army defeated by invading troops. Danish warlord Earl Ragnar captured Uhtred and raised him in a Danish camp alongside fellow captive Brida, a sharp-tongued girl. Years later, Uhtred is a valiant warrior who is dealt another tragic blow when his home is deliberately set on fire, killing his surrogate family, including Ragnar. Now exiled -- alone except for Brida by his side -- he vows to avenge Ragnar's death and reclaim his homeland. But, he must choose between his birth country and the people who raised him. If he is going to help birth a new nation and ultimately recapture his ancestral land he must walk dangerous path between both sides.

Off Topic / Human Trafficking Awareness Day
« on: December 11, 2014, 02:46:02 am »
Next week (the 11th) is human trafficking awareness day. Discuss why human trafficking is good/bad, show off your slave collection, rate each other's Thai 12 year old captives, compare price ratings, shipping companies, etc.

What are you doing for HTA day, guys? Personally, I'll be heading down to the dockyards to try to snag myself a nice piece of meat fresh off the ships. Have fun everyone.

Off Topic / Literature Discussion Thread
« on: May 30, 2014, 06:52:38 am »
Hello guys, I was thinking since we have a thread for most other forms of media, we could use one for good ol' books. I know there was a reading thread at some point in the past, but it's dead and I couldn't find it in my ten seconds of looking.

What have you guys been reading? Anything interesting that you'd like to discuss? Looking for recommendations? Want to recommend a book/series/comic? Go ahead right here.

I've been reading Crime and Punishment at the insistence of my friend, and I'm about 50 pages in and loving it so far. Dostoevsky is a fantastic storyteller and he knows how to expertly insert the reader into the shoes occupied by the miserable protagonist and his dreadful plight.

I've also gotten into Grossman's Life and Fate, which has been called the Soviet War and Peace - and rightfully so, in my opinion. It follows the story of a number of people during world war 2 at the time of the battle of Stalingrad - from mothers at home in Smolensk to soldiers fighting at the front, to bureaucrats struggling with paperwork in Moscow. It's probably one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Russian literature is quickly becoming my favorite. Anyway, please do tell. I want to talk. Now. Pls.

A basic recommended reading list:

And finally, thread music so we can all feel like the true pretentious pseudo-intellectuals we are.

Other Games / The Hunter 2013
« on: April 27, 2013, 06:10:00 am »
So I was introduced to this game called The Hunter by death by EMP, and I started playing it, and it may just be the most immersive game I've ever played. It's basically a simulator so there are a lot of complex mechanics like tracking, real time hour and minutes in the day (Or almost), real time weather, very realistic graphics, and dynamic roaming animals. This game is completely free-roam and takes place on a huge nature reserve that seems to be dozens of miles across. I've only explored a very small portion of it, but so far it's beautiful. It's free, so all you have to do is make an account on their website and sign up for the beta, and then download their client. Unfortunately the game requires an internet connection at all times to run, even though it's singleplayer, which is a nuisance.

Here are some screenshots I took while tracking deer: (the screenshots got formatted in a weird resolution, sorry)

Many people in the community, including myself believe that Champs Elysees is unfun, and a typical round is usually characterized by getting shot from halfway across the map by some guy sitting in a corner, hiding behind walls for the entire round, or getting ambushed by some guy hiding in the bushes.

For those of you who don't know it by name, it's the one with the big arch in the middle.

I'm sure there are some people who do like this map, but I'd say the majority of the community would be in favor of having this map removed if a universal poll were administered.

Thanks,

Nipplestockings and others
