It was optional anyways wasn't it? So if you either couldn't afford it or didn't prefer it you just didn't wear it.

The Polish Hussars weren't exactly the low-class soldiers, so I don't think they couldn't afford it. They probably just wore them on parade and shit.

Usually it did actually, if you were a knight you were usually granted a fief to rule over so that was a large source of income, plus knights were usually chosen from already rich families. A knight with no lands or serfs was called a Hedge knight and they were usually poorer. A hedge knight could be a peasant or a man at arms who performed exceptionally well in battle so they were given an honorary knighthood but nothing else.

The SS officer from WW2. Note I do not condone Nazi beliefs, their anti-Semitic policies (or anti- anything else for that matter) or the SS's involvement with the persecution of many different races and beliefs, just as a disclaimer so nothing bad comes of it. But as this thread is devoted to good looking uniforms, the history of a uniform isn't going to deter me from liking it.

Jodhpurs?

Apparently came from a lot of top brass in the early 20th century coming from the cavalry, and so the style was adopted far and wide. Even by Directors who wanted to look authoritative on set, it would seem.

That's just a quick bit of wikipedia'ing done just now though.

Damn yes, what year are these from?
1850-60ish since the Swedish army got the breechloading remington rolling block during the 60s. As you can see the men in the pic are carrying rifled muskets.

The scribbling in the sideline says 1861

On the Carabinieri, they may look cool, but they are the biggest ass-holes in whole of Italy. The pictures where they smile is a lovely piece of Propaganda. Truly, they just roam the streets of Rome to annoy tourists.

The fact their mounted arm has real sabres while patrolling is kinda cool, though.

Yep, they're a tad too full of themselves. Heavy handed and rude, they're pretty much just there for show. They're pretty much regular cops who were promoted to a job with less work but more pay. They're not all that better trained either, if I'm not incorrect.

It's no myth, the Polish Winged Hussars used them because in the wind they would generate a loud whistling noise that will annoy the opposing horse and make 'em crazy.

Isn't it just a myth that they ever carried those things in battle?

It's no myth, the Polish Winged Hussars used them because in the wind they would generate a loud whistling noise that will annoy the opposing horse and make 'em crazy.

Wouldn't that annoy the riders horse too?

Incase you didn't know, all animals can be trained, and can adapt, if that wasn't the case the horses would be annoyed people were riding them and would try to kick them off every 3 seconds.

Some of the richest people in the history of the world were nobles in Europe in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. John of Gaunt had a personal net worth of $110 billion, and most extremely expensive suits of armor costed nowhere near a fraction of that much, as you might guess.

Also if I was going against a Polish Winged Hussar, I'd pull him off the horse by just holding his wings, I am sure they didn't use that in combat.

Besides, do we have any evidence that these wings created this supposed whistle and if so, is it proven that it is loud enough to annoy a horse and make it "go nuts?"
Title: Re: Best Dressed Warrior
Post by: Archduke Sven on December 04, 2013, 10:55:30 pm
They were most likely only used in ceremony, i doubt they made a spooky whistling effect, and i doubt they were used in combat. The most relevant thing i've heard why they were used was that they prevent Tartar lassos from grabbing hold of the rider, as the wings made the targeted area bigger (I don't really know how to explain it, you probably get the picture though), and that if the lasso only grabbed hold of the wings, the wings would be detachable. Sounds dumb to me though.

I've read the exact opposite: The wings, being not that thick and sticking out, made a perfect target for the lasso and it was very easy to drag a rider off-balance by doing so.
In a melee the wings would only drag and slow down a rider, and making him a incredibly easy target. They were for the greatest part ceremonial.

Back to other uniforms: One of my period favorites are the French Equipages:

Simple, practical, yet pretty

What I mean't by no reason is that now they have no point, they are just idiots, at least a lot of them.
When the main Klan split up they went different ways and sometimes taking on new ideologies or mixing new ones with their old views.
If I remember correctly, where I am from, the Klan holds a rally each year. Sometimes for legitimate things and sometimes just to yell shit.
It's usually a different Klan group each year, some with more intelligent members than others.
Some are more political than others as well.

Well seeing as I went off topic, I will post a picture.

Klan has gone after people who aren't black. Jews, Catholics, Latinos, basically anyone who isn't a WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). After 9/11, that rift grew to include Arabs (Note I say Arabs, not just Muslims. Maronites and Orthodox Arabs get attacked also).

Could be worse, my house didn't actually get damaged. The Cops showed up and put all of the dumb bastards in jail for 3 years straight. They did get to the mosque however... funny how the National News only reports when a Church or Synagauge goes up in flames, but who cares if the sandn*ggers' place got torched!

Ok, I'm ranting now. I'm going to stop. Basically, KKK sucks.

Looks more early 20th century Italian to me. Im guessing its stolen from French chasseurs in the first place.

I just read on a thread on the taleworlds forum that the uniform in the picture was an "Imported French Chasseur uniform" which explains it lol, Belgian and French uniforms were practically identical although Belgians used less red and their chasseurs wore green coats instead of blue. Kind of smarter I think, but that's besides the point.

No. Many cavarlymen had bayonets - in the Napoleonic French army even the Chasseurs de la Garde had them.

I wouldn't put it past the Belgian Legion, these are the same men who stood 300 against 3000+ and suffered roughly 100 casualtes (only a small margin where actually killed) and inflicted more than 300 casualties on the Republicans. They entrenched themselves in Tacambaro and fought for 5 hours waiting for reinforcements that never came. They repelled assault after assault of Republican Mexicans and on at least 3 known separate occasions they actually launched counter attacks with bayonets. Eventually the Belgians pulled back into the center of the village and barricaded themselves in the church where they continued fighting even after all of their officers had been killed or wounded. Eventually the Mexican'ts decided to say "Fuck this amigo" and lit the church on fire at which point the Belgians were forced to surrender. Once the Belgians were captured, the Mexican'ts threatened to execute them if they didn't sign a protest against Maximillian (The Austrian Emperor who was married to a Belgian woman, this is why Belgian Legion was in Mexico) but they said "Fuck that shit" and the Mexican'ts decided not to execute them considering 300 Belgians just ass pounded 3000 of their amigos and the fact that if they just execute 200ish prisoners their ass is grass. Eventually they were exchanged and Republican Mexico was all like "woohoo we're all cool and shit" and then the Belgian Legion came back to Tacambaro and kicked their asses and took the village and then the Republican Mexican'ts were all like "oh shit we suck." Eventually the war was lost but not at the hands of the Belgian Legion who consistently kicked ass, it was pretty much because the US was like "Hey France get yer dudes out of Mexico, we like the Republican Mexican'ts better because Merica and stuff so go away or we'll attack yer Mexico guys." And so France backed off for some reason and left Mexico.

The Belgian Legion was disbanded in 1866 after an impressive service record. It's commander, Colonel Alfred Van Der Smissen became an officer of the Royal Guard I believe and his experience fighting insurgents came in handy when he suppressed a workers revolt in Liege. Van Der Smissen was a bad ass motherfucker who fought in the French Foreign Legion in Algeria where he first learned how to fight insurgent losers and in 80 days he fought 26 battles and punched the rebels' poop in. In Mexico he was extremely annoyed with the French top commander, Marshal Bazaine, because he was being irrationally cautious and conservative whereas Van Der Smissen was all about the offense. At one point when word had arrived that a large Republican column was advancing south, Van Der Smissen asked Maximilian for permission to lead a division of Imperial Mexicans, French Foreign Legionnaires, and the Austro-Belgian brigade which would have been the vanguard. He vowed that a great victory would be won and that it would change the whole war and the Emperor was fascinated with the idea but nothing ever became of it. It shows Van Der Smissen's aggressive tactics and bravado though and he was one of the Empresses favorite people. He eventually committed suicide because his mental and physical health had deteriorated with old age and he couldn't stand to not be capable of doing his job so he ate a bullet for breakfast.

Wieght comes to mind. Also, shooting with a lance-ling musket would be difficult without a fork to keep it up, like those old-age Arquebusques.

It wouldn't. A lance is a weapon to be used with 1 hand, a musket isn't - as well as being off-balance for such use. Apart from the purely logistical problem of not being able to keep it anywhere on a horse.

They styled their uniforms after the Germans because German was simply fashion in those days. Even the American army had uniforms styled after the Prussians/Germans. Basically all uniforms after 1870 were German-styled.

It's because you're matching the wrong ones.

Anyhow they have several similar traits, such as the litzen on the collar, the picklhaube and very similar coats and colors.

Of course they were but it would just be unfair to call them ripoffs. The only ones who got the pickelhaubes in Sweden were the grenadier regiments. The rest got the "keppi -styled" hat.

Maybe the grenadier regiments such as "Svea life grenadiers" were similar but the rest of the infantry, cavalry and artillery looked pretty original.
As said, it was only the grenadier regiments who got the pickelhaube. And even then the pickelhaube isn't identical to the Prussian one.

Nobody called them rip-offs. And we aren't just talking about the pickelhaube, though, by the way, saying the 'Swedish' Pickelhaube is not like the 'German' one is nonsense considering the pike-helmet IS German. Sweden had pretty unique uniforms in the Napoleonic but, like the other nations, switched to French style which was replaced by German style in the late 19th century. Even the Dutch.

Dutch infantrymen in 1874. Note the resemblance with the Swedish infantry. The colour is, of course, dark blue.

We talked about this before. Uniforms looked extremely alike during this period. Details sometimes were a bit different, but that's it. We must remember that this is the time where you couldn't recognize someones uniform from the distance you were going to shoot him from anyway, so it mattered little. And maybe even more important - There were barely multinational wars during this period, apart from the Crimea, so the most important thing for any army was to look pretty, and one looks pretty by following (military) fashion.

If anyone carries a pretty unique uniform nowadays, I bet it's this Dutch regiment.

Nowadays there's barely any meat in the mighty falukorv, it might have been back them but now it's just mixed with a bunch of water and other stuff.

I'm not very interested in men with dresses and garbage bins with coloured tampons on their heads.

Oh look. Swedes. What a surprise.

C-C-C-Combo breaker.

The Archetypical Greek Hoplite is always good, though lets not talk about the slightly suspect shape of the Corinthian helm.

I was just pointing out that what you literally said you hated was in the picture you showed, within the same post.

Wismar, do you like anything other then Swedish uniforms (which is just for the fact they are Swedish)? I'm pretty sure the Swedish army could be dressing in pink tutus and popcorn buckets and you'll still love them.

There's nothing wrong with showing a uniform you like, but you have shown the same uniforms again and again. Swedish army, 1880ish. We know you like them, and we do not have to reminded every page with a shipload of pictures.

You see the blue-yellow cloth? That's a shabrak. It's there to cover the saddle and the ugly saddlepad (the pad the saddle lies on). It fails its purpose.

Can't really blame this unit, though. They are certainly not the only ones. Uniform makes up for it.

The 2e Régiment de Chevau-Légers Lanciers de la Garde Impériale were formed in 1810 from the Dutch troops of the Guard Hussar Regiment, the 3rd Hussar Regiment and the Garde du Corps. Their colonel, Baron Pierre David de Colbert-Chabanais, was nicknamed Iron man because of various wounds he recieved in Egypt, Austerlitz, Eastern Prussia, Wagram and Quatre-Bras. Often nicknamed the Red Lancers or Crawfish because of their red uniforms. They are truly beautiful.

Now for some images (Warning: They are big).

For the past ages, I would consider this as the best armor

https://qph.is.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-ef5174d1c897dd8708369680104437ec?convert_to_webp=true

Of course you cannot cut through any kind of good armor, but this armor aimed at hiding as much skin as possible in order to keep the user safe. It also allows fine mobility. Typically, the best way to kill the person using this armor is to go behind him and cut his nape.
The amount of it's cover and shape makes you look like you mean business.

And not really. French uniforms were even more similair between regiments, as they had long abolished regimental colours.

But is there a british regiment that doesn't have the red-white-black combination? I could think of multiple french regiments that have interesting colors for example the Prince of Neufchatel's (Neuchatel) Battalion better know as 'The Canaries'

Or Napoleons swiss regiment, or the polish legion.
There are also a lot of cool variations from the Egypt campaign or the Spanish war.
I mean, the british uniforms aren't ugly, no, they are just a little bit boring to look at.

Yes, that would be the every single British regiment aside from the 50th, 58th, 64th, 70th and 89th Regiments of Foot.

British regiment's had different colours on their uniforms called Facings. This was the collars, cuffs and shoulder epaulettes of their uniforms and would correspond to funnily enough the colour of their Regimental Colours.

For example the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Foot Guards and 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 18th, 21st, 23rd and 42nd Regiments of Foot had blue facings whilst the 13th, 15th, 16th, 28th, 29th, 34th, 37th, 38th, 44th, 75th, 77th, 80th, 85th, 86th, 88th and 93rd Regiments of Foot had Yellow facings to their uniform.

Correct for 1815, though the Brunswichers between 1809 and 1814 were part of the austrian and later the British army.

My personal favourites are the renowned regiments of the French army that received white uniforms for their achievements and titles gained (however a few received them for no reason at all). For example 14e, 17e and 18e although there are more. Not just because of the NW regiments besides them but more for how unique they were and how looked up to they were alongside the Garde.

However its a shame that the company's that received the uniforms were obviously used in quite hard battles and their numbers were not replenished, they were just replaced entirely.

I'd like to see some source for that, Price. Because as far as I know, white uniforms where a failed experiment by Napoleon to reintroduce the white uniforms of the Ancien Regime. They had nothing to do with achievements.

I will have a look later, however when I was working at City Of London School they had a few speakers in at the anniversary of Waterloo and I asked a couple of them and they both said the same thing, which is that regiments the regiments that were given a white-red/white-black uniform were for achievements however its as you say, alot of regiments received white-purple uniforms just for a failed experiment.

I will have a look when I get home, maybe I was mis informed but I have had no reason to think otherwise so hey ho

Not sure if the dye was that hard to get by, because obviously they eventually succeeded in procuring the substance, but white uniforms are cheaper.

The Conseil d'Etat discussed a colour of the Grand Armee's colours, as indigo dye was expensive and was shipped from Britain. Napoleon said: "It would be no small economy to dress the troops in white, though it may be said, truly enough, that they have succeeded pretty well in blue. I don't think, however, that their strength lies in the colours of their coats, as that of Samson did with the length of his hair." Other considerations against having white uniforms were how filthy they could get during campaign and the blood they'd show . It was just a failed experiment to cope with the hard-to-come-by indigo dye.

I've seen this argument before, and I honestly doubt this. It didn't concern the Dutch, Spanish or Austrians, and every uniform gets filthy after a month of campaigning, regardless of uniform colour. Uniforms were horrible quality wool anyway. The fact that it was a lot of work to keep the uniforms clean and mend them when they tore was considered totally normal and just another task of soldiers.

There's 'some dirt on my uniform' and then there's 'a filthy uniform'. Uniforms changing colour or rotting away while they were worn was not uncommon.

The contrast between mud and white is far greater than between indigo and mud. So yes, from a distance it would stand out more. From up close? I'd think it would be about the same.

But as brought up before, keeping your uniform clean and pristine was considered part of a soldier's duty. So in theory, mud on uniforms wouldn't be an issue. In theory at least.

But the sheer amount of nature a uniform would experience during a campaign makes the outcome for any uniform the same: eventually, it will look like shit. Of course, verybody wore greatcoats during campaigns anyway. Uniform coats were only worn for battle, and in that short period a white uniform would probably look dirtier then a blue one. Regardless, I don't see how it would bother the French while not bothering the Dutch, Spanish, Austrians or Saxons.

This is a soldier from the 23rd SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division Nederland. It was a unit composed of Dutch volunteers who wanted to join the Germany Army (duh). They were paired with Flemish volunteers to form the Regiment Westland while Nordic volunteers were made into the Regiment Nordland. The vast majority of the volunteers joined to help stop the spread of Bolshevism and the horror of what we know as 'communism'. They saw most, if not all of their front-line combat on the Eastern front participating in many crucial battles from Leningrad to the Battle of Halbe where they surrendered to U.S. forces. Due to the surrender to civilized Western troops, many did not have to be taken off to Russia to meet their ultimate demise. I find their sacrifice and willingness to stop a truly evil ideology as heroic. I will not excuse that they fought for Nazi Germany but I believe that for many of them it was something along the lines of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' sort of thing. I was very interested to find that the Netherlands played in an active role in stopping Communism and the horrors it has brought this world.

He's distinguishable for his patch located under the Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle) which is a Dutch National Sleeve.

They were traitors who joined the army that had violenty invaded and occupied their own nation just a year before. Their only contribution to western civilization was aiding one dictatorial regime fighting against another. I do recogize the fact that many of them joined out of anti-Bolshevik feelings rather then pro-Nazi ideas.

Troops captured by the Soviet Army were not sent to meet 'their ultimate demise'. They were treated harshly, but still as POWs. Only Soviet citizens who had joined the Germans were punished by the Soviets. Surrendering to the western allies also didn't save you, most of the time; The allies had made an agreement that collaborators would be sent to their respective nations.

You also don't have to bother with hiding the Swastika's. A SS-uniform is still a Nazi imagery even with the swastika hidden, but it's allowed for historic discussion.

The West German government set up a Commission headed by Erich Maschke to investigate the fate of German POW in the war, in its report of 1974 they found that 3,060,000 [16] German military personnel were taken prisoner by the USSR and that 1,094,250 died in captivity ( 549,360 from 1941-April 1945; 542,911 from May 1945 to June 1950 and 1,979 from July 1950 to 1955) [17] According to German historian Rüdiger Overmans ca. 3,000,000 POW were taken by the USSR, he put the "maximum" number of German POW deaths in Soviet hands at 1.0 million.[5] Based on his research, Overmans believes that the deaths of 363,000 POWs in Soviet captivity can be confirmed be the files of Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt), in addition he maintains that it seems entirely plausible, while not provable, that 700,000 German military personnel listed as missing actually died in Soviet custody.

SS-members were treated not as POWs but as criminals. However the Russians did not treat the common soldier as bad as the Germans did - they didn't gas tens of thousands of regular Wehrmacht-Soldiers just because they were German.

In their defence, they weren't aware of those actions when joining. Discrimination against the Jews was clear, of course, and ignorance does not absolve you of blame. The Dutch army apparantly took a more practical stand, apparantly: When they needed new Tank officers, apparantly they asked Dutch SS-officers who had served in tank regiments. They declined, though this story can't be confirmed entirely. Undoubtly it's not a story they teach you at the KMA.

As Riddlez said, SS were declared a criminal organisation, not a part of the Armed Forces so whether you agree with this or not, the Soviet-Union was legally allowed to deal with SS'ers as criminals. Not that they probably cared. The Soviet-Union was an evil place, I won't deny that. For both its enemies as well as its own people - countless peoples, togethering numbering in the millions, were collectively punished.

Some Soviet POW's were kept in the town of my grandmother. They were forced to work there, but my grandmother recalled her and her friends playing with them during their breaks. They were probably executed somewhere in 1944. And to me, that signals the difference: The Soviet-Union might have mistreated this POW's, might have worked them to extreme conditions and they might have excecuted some unjustly, but in the end, there was no wish to exterminate them down to the last man. Both evil, but one definitaly more so.

And Wolff, to be honest, if their party membership is what made led to them being imprisoned longer, well, this could have been easily avoided: By not joining the Nazi Party. Actions have consequences.

Hitler and the Nazi Party were objectively evil in all aspects. They were unilaterally more evil than the Soviet Union, and every German in Germany was complicit in their actions and cannot be absolved of blame. There was no honorable defense of fatherland by any German soldiers, Wehrmacht or SS. Only objectively evil and greedy territorial ambition.

So joining out of a love for ones country is wrong? So you're telling me that any person who served in the Wehrmacht was automatically evil? So you're telling me that when you read reports of the Red Army raping entire cities that they joined out of territorial ambition? So you're telling me that German soldiers who enlisted because their country was economically ruined by the allies were joining out of territorial ambition? So you're telling me that when you read reports of how the Soviet Union brutally oppressed and killed millions in such terrible events as the Great Terror, the Polish Operation, the Ukrainian famine, the mass killing of kulaks, brutal suppression of peasants, Soviet Partisans violating the rules of war, the list goes on and on (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_war_crimes#Before_World_War_II)

I'm not saying that what Nazi Germany did was good, I think what the high command of the party stood for was evil and cannot be overlooked but the everyday foot soldier who was drafted into the army is not to be blamed for the ambition of the high command of his leadership. To honestly believe that every German was some antisemtic lunatic is both reduduant, stupid, and absolutely backwards. The Germany army followed the Geneva Convention rules for the most part and where they didn't follow, other countries often did the same but were not punished because they won the war, go figure. Don't even attempt to make the argument that the Soviets did this or that because they did not sign the Geneva Convention and subsequently treated Germans and others like dirt. The Germans were quite good about courtmarshalling and punishing those who broke rules as compared to the Soviets who willingly broke them and were never punished.

There's quite a bold line between the SS and the rest of the Germany military so to go on blaming the actions of the SS as the actions of the average day foot soldier is just plain dumb.

Does this mean that every American soldier joined out of territorial ambition since they fought in a war out of the defense of their country following the Attack on Pearl Harbor?

I haven't had a kek that good in a while, thanks m8'y

One of the more humorous claims of German apologists is that Germans were enlisting and fighting for the defense of their fatherland and to defend themselves from soviet atrocity. Before the Soviets could commit a single atrocity against the Germans, the Germans were the ones who actually invaded the Soviet Union with the goal of exterminating its Slavic population and clearing it for Lebensraum. It's idiotic to pin any significant atrocities on the Soviets, as they were the ones that were invaded, endured 20,000,000 casualties, and suffered through an invading army attempting to exterminate their entire ethnicity.

The Geneva Convention was thrown in the trash by Hitler on the Eastern Front. He cared little for it, and there are frequent accounts of Wehrmacht units executing civilian populations. One such is from an Italian journalist who accompanied a Wermacht unit and wrote multiple books on his experiences with them.

I am by no means a Soviet apologist. I hate communism and all the regimes that attempted to implement it. That being said, there is an important distinction to be made between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia: the average Russian had a shit life under the Soviet regime, reminiscent of life under the Czar, while the average German enjoyed many benefits in Nazi Germany.

A German in 1940 was most likely very happy with their situation, and didn't mind the fact that his nations armies were trampling upon the rights of every nation in Europe, while an entire ethnic group was being slowly disenfranchised. They are complicit because they benefited, and there's no getting around that.

Also, like I said before, it's idiotic to decry Soviet atrocities. Germany punched, the soviets just punched back harder. It's as if I punched you, then you punched me harder, and I accused you of war crimes.

And by the way June, posting pictures of dead bodies with a sarcastic message does not immediately invalidate my point.

I'm a big fan of the Late Roman periods of history, between the 200s through 500s AD. After that, although still actually Roman, the periods are usually referred to as Byzantine, for the Eastern Roman Empire.

Here are some pictures of Western Roman soldiers and their equipment. Roman legions, even during the Republic and the earlier Empire years were never completely uniform in appearance, with some soldiers wearing different variations to their armor and equipment. Even the late 1st century BC through 3rd century AD usages of lorica segmentata armor was not as common as films and popular culture depictions of Romans make them out to be. Lorica hamata, chain mail armor, was more common. By the later era of the Roman Empire, then the Western and Eastern divisions of the Empire and after, lorica segmentata had fallen into disuse due to impracticalities compared to mail, likely including the costs and very individual nature of the fitting. Lorica squamata is what we would think of as scale mail, and lorica plumata is also similar.

I'd say Probably Spartans or Winged Hussars because the Greeks not only had some badass armor but had great tactics as well but for the Winged Hussar they were able to drive back many nations without fear.

But for a more Standardized army I would pick the Bavarian, Scottish, or Polish Uniforms for their discipline and pretty cool uniforms or the the world war 1 and 2 German uniforms. But for like counter Terrorist team uniforms I like the SAS or GSG9.
