Its not real but everyone believes its real because every once in a thousand someone who people believes has potential makes something of themselves.

Potential is just up side. to ask if someone has a lot of potential is to ask if that person has a lot of upside and if he has the ability to develop them in certain conditions.

You can have a lot of up side and a lot of down sides at the same time.
A lot of players are potential busts.

Someone who is only limited by his attitude has tremendous potential.
