Due to increased strain on the servers, all regiment threads will be capped at 100 pages, at which point they will be locked by the moderation staff. Please feel free to make a new thread if your own has been locked for this reason. If anyone needs the content of their Original Post made available for a new thread, please contact a moderator and we'll provide the BB code version for you.
Thank you for your co-operation,

The change was done for performance reasons.
I can assure you the box the webserver is running on is one of the fastest in the market, however a many page topic, is straining it at lot, let me explain why.
Whenever a person opens a topic, the database is asked to locate all posts in the posts table (millions) that are with topicID x.
After It fetched these details and stored in memory, you can imagine if you have 100+ pages, think about 500 pages, then there are thousands of posts fetched and stored in memory.
When it has gathered this information it is going to filter this data according to what page you are watching... then send this information to your computer.
The sad truth is that whenever you open a big page topic, reply to it, whatever, every page load is bumping the MySQL database process to 100% CPU for a good second.. mind you that is on a latest Intel Xenon CPU..
Topics with 100 pages, are in my opinion a good limit, they take significantly less CPU load..
Except CPU, the memory usage will be less and overall the site will perform faster..
The problems with remaking your topic were unintended, please send a message to a moderator or me to send you your topic start post contents.
I understand not everyone loves this change, but believe me, it is for the better to keep everything running smooth.
We are running BCOF test, NW Servers, BCOF development stuff and the Forums on the same machine.
We can not afford to have constant spikes, which you will not notice when visiting the forums, because they are just that, very short spikes, but we do notice when testing BCOF.
Capping the pages to 100 prevents most of these CPU spikes. Unless you donate us 1440 euro each year, so we can host the forums on a separate server, it will stay as it is. We do not have the money to pay for it on our own.

Good bye good bye.
-
Can I just ask why the server boxes seem to be so (To put it frankly) shit? There are plenty of other forums that could easily handle over one hundred pages per topic on thousands of topics?
-
I don't know the exact specs of the machines we're running on, but the majority of FSE's funding is going into BCoF. If you'd rather they diverted funds from their next game to keep the community
happy arguing, then feel free to make a thread and state your case.
Or you could pay for your own community forum.
-
This probably would have saved a lot of drama if this had been enacted earlier.
-
Pages=Text
Since when does text lag?
-

Ok then, that does make sense. My other 2 questions are though, why limit at 100 pages as a regiment will just keep creating lots of 100 paged topics which will surely create the same effect? And secondly, why not just delete the old dead regiment's threads buried deep in FSE?
-
Gotta love power trips
-
The issue lies with the thread being loaded. The larger a thread gets, the more needs loading every time someone opens it, and therefore the more server resources need using. It's not an overall space issue, it's with the sizes of the threads getting loaded every time someone decides to open it.

Can't a little bit of re-coding get round this? It seems a little prehistoric to demand the whole thread to the client when the client just wants to read page 213 for example?
-
:^)
-
Again, probably, but neither I nor the Devs have the time to put into it. The pages themselves aren't being deleted, so the regiments can still look back through their history if they want to - it just allows us to keep the forums running smoothly without having to start digging around in SMF source code.
-
*And, for the record, it wouldn't be a little bit of re-coding.

Yeah I know, just an idea. If this is the only solution, so be it but you had to expect a little irritation or this wouldn't be the FSE community we have all grown to love and hate.
-
Yeah, I appreciate the thought. It's a shame this is how it has to be, but it's just the best way for us to keep the forums running at the moment.

Why does the regimental part have to be the only part capped?
-
It's the regiment's members' fault for not donating.
-
It's got the most large threads by a long, long way, so it was where we could make the most positive impact on the performance of the forums.
Or we're just all megalomaniacs that hate you all having fun. I've heard both theories.

How is a regiment that has a banned leader such as the 25th supposed to get a new thread?
-
I'd assume one of their other officers could make it. We'll still provide the code from the original thread.

I believe ArtOfKilling can take care of that, he just needs to message a moderator.

Any particular reason you are being a complete dick to everyone Blob? Or will you call this spam and mute me for asking a legitimate question?
-
I have no problem with it. As long as I can have my BB code back then im happy. ;D
For in the future ofc. :P
-
What I don't understand is why this is coming out of the blue now?
Like are FSE saving in on servers or something?
Because this has never been a problem in the past?
Honestly we might as well close down the entire forum since nothing of value would be lost anyways, it would save FSE money and we could all just go back to Taleworlds where we belong.
BCoF is not even in alpha so no need for a forum for that in at least another 6 months.
I never understood why the NW dlc forum would move away from Taleworlds, since it's a dlc for their game!

Then I don't understand how Taleworlds who uses the same forum software, have no problems when they have many more 100+ page threads. Whenever I go on Taleworlds forum there seems to be no lag. Surely they also use "one of the fastest" webservers too? Also, why didn't the Mod team simply remove the old locked threads before the active ones?
-
I have never had lag on fse aswell
-
Any particular reason you are being a complete dick to everyone Blob? Or will you call this spam and mute me for asking a legitimate question?
I'm enforcing forum policy. In this case I've given a fair warning to anyone posting here that they should keep on-topic, as it's an important thread that people need to be able to read easily. If people are still going to spam it despite that then they need to be dealt with.

Whether we'd done it now or 6 months ago it would still have seemed "out of the blue". The nature of change is that one day things happen in a certain way, and the next they do not. It's not exactly something we can phase in gradually.
-
Are you gonna repost a locked version of the old 60th thread?
pls :'( i want to see it one last time
-
Wait guys... What happens if we get this thread to 100 pages?

What I meant was like did you think at all blob?
Honestly you didn't es it in at all you just said this is what's going to happen,
you gave no proper explanation to why this is happening
and then you just started locking everyone's threads without them getting anytime to say goodbye. :'(
We could have re posted our own threads you know which could have saved you a lot of work to.
-
Why does it even matter if your thread gets locked? If it's for publicity of your regiment to keep it up, I'm sure everyone has seen it if its made it to 100 pages. If it reaches 100 just copy the code and remake it, no biggie.
Seems like everyone just pisses and whines with every decision FSE makes whether it's good or bad.
-
Forum has never lagged for me and to be quite honest the forum isn't active enough to overload a toaster nevermind the fastest server on the market.. Just seems like an easy way to destroy a regiments image and history. That said since the bbcode will be given I don't really care, you rarely get recruits of forum advisement anymore, just a pain in the ass to redo everything after 100 pages.
-

If you need any more explanation than that then I'm more than happy to try and give it, but I'm not sure I can elaborate better than Vince already has. The inability to obtain the bb-code of their original posts wasn't something we'd anticipated, but we've provided a solution as best we can.

Oh boy, it's gonna be fun readding all the 33rd FSE page links to our website every 100 pages.
But not as fun as for the guy updating the regiment list with new threads of regiments who've already been on the list.
Fun fun fun.
The forum has never lagged for me even with my shitty Plusnet broadband.
-
Here is my little piece on this. This change will change nothing, because once a regiment gets their thread to 100, it gets locked and another one is made and once that one gets to 100 they make a new one, and so on. What is the difference between having 500 pages and have 5 threads that have 100 pages each? Nothing in my mind. This is just ruining peoples old memories of regiment from old posts/pictures. There is no need for this. I have never felt any forum lag, except the day that Iron Europe crap came out. You might also think it will decrease "forum spam", but I feel instead of people racing to see how many pages they have, they are just going to make it a race to have many thread they can have.

I'm not sure why we'd want to do that.
Nor am I, which is why I presuming alot of people are confused at the move. Like I said though, at this stage the only person its really going to affect is the poor guys that maintain threads (and ofc whoever the current regiment list editor is).
-
Should have given people a 1 day warning to get code and lock their own threads, and lock the ones that weren't done on the 24 hours or whatever.
Oh and I need my 4te thread code.

I still support moving back to Taleworlds until Battle Cry of Freedom actually has a 2 second video of in-game footage. All the new players of the game go there first, so why waste time over here for a game that the only thing we know about it is through pictures.

I think it is pretty immature and sad in a way to ban Kaide simply for posting a video... ??? ? I mean guy's come on we ain't kids ye? If u have something agians't it simply remove the thread or the message. Don't just ban for something stupid and little like that. At any rate, it was an good event 78th vs 59th and i look forward to any future events.

Well that is how You decided to do it.
Of course it is. I thought you'd have learnt by now that I make every decision on every forum, everywhere - it was my decision not to allow users to quote locked posts, and I personally designed the forums in such a way that we'd get performance issues in the first place. I just hate to see you all so damn happy that I stayed up an extra two hours last night to explain to users what was going on (and send them their OP's), cutting down my own sleep to 5 hours before my real job began in the morning.
Moderators are such dicks.

Several users have requested over the last few weeks that he be re-banned, however I refused until I'd had a chance to properly look into his case. As it stands he's already been banned once and has repeatedly re-offended since returning to the forums. People who've been unbanned rarely get away with as much as he did, and in the end I re-banned him for those. The mute for spam was merely coincidental.

We don't ban on recommendation. People asked that he be looked into, he was, and he was banned as a result. He was on his last chance following his last ban - he knew that, and he should have behaved himself. There's nothing more to it.

How about we be a smart cookie, and remove grandma's laptop from the hosting equation. stop spending donations on shit and get a decent server box?

I won't punish you for posting a private chat log because I understand that you're upset, but you need to stop posting about it in this thread. This isn't the place for it, and I've already explained why he was banned (the post was never deleted, I think you just missed it a few posts up). I didn't go into excessive detail with Vince because I know he trusts my judgement, and both my explanations here and to him privately were accurate. Apollo was among those who approached me with concerns, but I mentioned him by name to Vince because he's a fellow moderator and therefore warranted a mention.
If you contact me on Steam or through a PM I'll try and answer any other questions you have.
Regards,
Blob
