Regiments / Miquelets de Catalunya [CAT] [EU]
« on: July 15, 2015, 10:50:38 pm »HISTORY Founded in 1640 by volunteers, the Miquelets militias were firstly formed during the denominated revolt “Reapers War” to fight back the advancing Spanish army into Catalan lands. They were skirmishers, lightly-clad fierce warriors who moved fast around the mountains they lived in, they wore a blue coat, white pants and sandals. They are considered the modern equivalent of the "Almogàver" medieval unit. Their tricorn had a white long feather. Back in the day, Catalan farmers unified to stop the Spanish armies exploitation of their land during the Franco-Spanish war. Firstly, these irregular skirmish troops accomplished to halt the enemy at Tortosa and annihilated Spanish armies at Montjuïc even being outnumbered one catalan per four spaniard. These units were dissolved after the war. The Miquelets appeared once again in during the war of Spanish Succession. Started in 1701 after the death of Charles II of Habsburg , Austria claimed the throne for Archduke Charles of Habsburg and so did France for Philip de Bourbon. The territories of the Crown of Aragon (Catalonia, Valencia and the Baleraric Island) were loyal to the Habsburg dynasty, fearing the French autocrat would erase their ancient rights and constitutions whereas Castille and the rest of Spain sided with the French. Catalans created volunteer units for the Austrian Imperial Army, and fought side by side with the Habsburgs. From 1701 to 1714, the Miquelets fought in many battles against the Spanish army and their French allies. After the bloody siege of Barcelona, Phillip defeated his enemies and begun the darkest epoch in catalan history. The new spanish Bourbonic dynasty started a Hispanization campaign, removing all autonomic powers and liberties, instauring castillian culture and silencing all dissidence. The Miquelets had been seen as a bandit patrol and during the next generations they looted and assaulted villages in northern Catalonia and French border. In 1808 Napoleon established his brother Joseph as King of Spain, expelling Ferdinand VII and occupying most of the penninsula starting the Spanish Independence war to kick french armies out of our land. In 1812 Catalonia was annexed as part of the French empire. During the war group of volunteers merged once again a unit to fight side-by-side with France for Catalonia’s Independence, the Miquelets. |
