So there is something that has been bothering me about the 79th NY, since I'm a former member of the 79th NY Company B reenactment group (Now the 11th CT).
The 79th did NOT have a bagpiper. There is a story as it goes that on the way down from New York to Manassas that a piper shortly joined us, but since he was so bad at playing he... disappeared... But that is the only account of a piper with the 79th...
And I have one suggestion for the uniforms; The 79th soon found out that wearing kilts was a bad idea (Mosquito's can get into all the wrong places). So those who didn't trade out their kilts actually just turned them into pants, which (I think) was mostly NCO and musicians. So, plaid pants!
Another fun historical fact about the 79th; The 79th had a mutiny after the First Bull Run, as they had lost most of their officers in the battle. They were highly drunk at the time.
