Bank Holiday Monday joust at Hedingham Castle
"[15th] Colonel Cenkris: A lazy officer who didn`t contribute anything to the success of his detatchment or the regiment disposed of after displaying incredible disloyalty and attitute problems towards fellow officers"
Aww thanks Cenkris for those kind words

Needs a gorget or Gregor Clegane will lance him through the throat.
I really wanted to watch the tilting at Kelmarsh but I completely did my ankle in.

Annoying thing is, because we were on the other side of a ditch from the public this weekend, all the pictures have come out like this.

At least it captured my pimp pose on the far left.

Some pasty farb still posing in kit after the public's left.

Did a lot of after hours archery at that event. That's the group crossbow in the foreground. Fun as hell to shoot as long as it doesn't misfire.

Crossbows are for untrained plebs. Bows all the way.

But seriously, how does one operate bows in re-enactment? Aren't they like, lethal?
I mean, I am an archers, and if you want to go full historical, there is no way a 120 pound bow is NOT going to hurt someone.

Bows are limited to about 30 pounds for most events and battles.

You can also see the type of 'arrowhead' we use in the foreground of that picture. Completely blunt and pretty wide, with a bit of give behind the point of it so it's not a completely solid force hitting you.

And you ear safety glasses? Even a 30 pound bow will fuck your eyes up.
I know there are always risks, but in the heat of a re-enactment and when your back muscles start to ache, a chance fo a technical error is huge, and then your arrow will definitely fly off course.

Nope. It's a rare case of authenticity trumping safety, open faced helmets mean you just duck your head if someone fires a volley. I'm fairly sure it's only clout shooting in battles anyway.

Though we did an archery display at the tournament, hence at the practice, and the shooters were shooting straight at Knights, though because they were in barrel helms it was easy to conceal some resistant lab goggles underneath them.

Nice, pretty damn nice actaully. Would've expected far less than 30 pounds, to be honoust.
Anyways, one last question and I'll get of yer arse.

Is it generally that you just protray an archer of the period and pick up a bow? Or does it generally attract people who know how to shoot one to being with? Or do they teach you?

Couldn't say, I'm a terrible archer. Most people who are into it will probably buy themselves a period bow and practice with it though. My group only started doing it properly because English Heritage wanted an archery round to the tournament, we've a couple of really good archers and some that are just enthusiastic.

Anyone interested in my group arrives about an hour early for practice, there's generally a bit of advice given but we don't take it as seriously as we do the melee stuff.

Which is completely understandable since war- and longbows aren't made for accuracy.

EDIT: As long as you don't take any movie whatsoever as source, you'll be fine (especially LotR, it's just embarassing there). Except the hungergames, they actually use some technique there.
