Prussian Army Battalion and Company distinction
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:02:18 am »
So I have been searching both the internet and books, and I have not found the answer to this question: Did Prussian Army units have battalion and Company distinctions? For example, how could you tell apart the 1st and second Musketeer Battalions of a regiment? How could you tell which company they were in? I know the French used different colored pom-poms. Any imput/knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you could tell by the colour of the dragonne (a ribbon tied to the sabrehilt). I'll check the exact ones when I'm home.

As Vicccard says, the sword knots showed the company.

From left to right: the first eight are for the 1st through 8th companies. The next four belong to the fusilier companies. The next two are the first and second grenadier companies, followed by the NCO's tassel. The last is an honourary one given on 17 March, 1809 to privates who were in the army when the Treaty of Tilsit was signed.

I don't believe they wore any battalion distinctions.

Hope that helps.

Damned, you beat me to it.

Though they didn't wear battalion distiction, you could tell his battalion by the number of his company. 1-4, 1st, 5-8, 2nd, en the fussiliers in the 3rd. (Unless I'm mistaken, which isn't entirely impossible as I just type this from memory.)
