Battle of Waterloo recipients of the medal
« on: July 05, 2013, 08:31:54 pm »
hello,
I am new to this forum, and hope that I can be directed to the correct place to answer my question..is it possible that some soldiers that DID participate at the battle of Waterloo, did NOT receive a medal? and what would have been the reason for this?

I am doing family research and have information that my great great grandfather was present at the battle, however, on the Ancestry site which lists the soldiers that received the medal, he is not on it.

Over the years I have acquired  documents that say that he was with the 28th Foot regiment, and have read conflicting articles about their involvement and presence at the battle.

Hoping that someone may be able to help,
thanks!

Did every single participant at Gettysburg get a medal? Borodino? Verdun? Stalingrad?

Soldiers generally don't get medals simply for doing what's expected of them.

Yes.

The Commies issued the medal whilst the battle was ongoing.

Yes, as it was for the "defense" of the city, not just the battle. Awards continued through the 20th century. In 1962, at least 707,000 had been issued but by 1995 it increased to ~760,000. If you had the paperwork in order, it would be issued.

Here's the receipt for one issued in 1969.

Except for when they do. Campaign and service medals are fairly common. Have a WW1 one somewhere in the house from some relative or another.

Says (On Wikipedia, mind) that 39,000 Waterloo medals were given out, to British soldiers who participated in Waterloo or Quatre Bras. And that number seems like it more than covers the amount of British soldiers that were actually part of the Anglo-Allied Army.

Not really sure what to say there.

Every British soldier that was at any of the battles during the Waterloo campaign received the medal, officially at least. I suppose there are a number of reasons someone might not have received it.

Those ancestry are never going to be 100% sure. Personal documents and official documents are best in tracking down information.
