I read a story about a Belgian-Irish soldier that fought for the British in the Boer Wars, WW1, and WW2. He fled his home in Poland at the start of WW2 on a train and joined up with the British again. He was shot in the head and lost all of his fingers on one hand over the course of these wars.

The caroleans used to march straight on towards the enemy, even under enemy fire and fire a volley when they saw the white in the enemies eyes, and then charge. But well, caroleans was not some common soldiers, they were much better than that 8)

There was a Scottish soldier in WW2 who carried a broadsword and longbow. He survived, and killed quite a few Germans.
