Duvall Leatherwork

He makes some of the best leather gear out there. Nice guy too. Can be a bit expensive but you get what you pay for.

Tim Bender

Makes very nice hats and, in my opinion, the best 1858 dress hat(hardee) out there. His customer service is the BEST. I can not stress that enough.

Some were issued with the brass and stuff and some were issued separately. Some soldiers preferred to wear the brass and stuff. Some did not.

He uses the silk from the rare Albino Tibetan Moose Spider coated in Alaskan Parakeet milk. It's extremely hard to extract the silk from the antlers but it's worth it because it makes the strongest suspenders in the world. :P

For Ex. He use some wild alaskan spider silk to make suspenders XD Based in USA as well

He uses the silk from the rare Albino Tibetan Moose Spider coated in Alaskan Parakeet milk. It's extremely hard to extract the silk from the antlers but it's worth it because it makes the strongest suspenders in the world. :P

You don't say? I have heard those antlers are also used in Soviet Union Nuclear Warhead.

The only known photograph of a Tibetan Moose Spider

It could be they kept the brass plate for guard dress. Keeping it nicely shining.

The pistol was simply brought from home, which many soldiers did. Especially at the start of the war.

Brass plate? Anyway, that is possible for some soldier but bear in mind. Non regulated Army regiments have to pay for these brass. They weren't issued freely like the Army does. I have heard some commanders bought some bunch for his regiment but still, Volunteer regiments was like 80% of the Union Army and they had to pay for the brass. So they probably would rather spend their money on something useful.

Here's a list which shows all expensive everything was. It's in Dutch, because it was for Dutch soldiers in 1814-15.

I'm still trying to find out what this was in todays money.

To give an idea on how expensive these things were:

An infantry coat was 10 Guldens and 10 stuivers - A regular soldier earned 91 Gulden and 5 stuives a year.

They often sent letters back home to ask for money. Especially when the army was camped somewhere for a long time, things got really expensive.

Yes, exactly, it was taken out of their pay - sometimes they weren't paid for months because they were in so much debt. Food took most of their pay as well, so you barely had anything left when left the army.

ACW billy yanks were issued most of everything but if it was lost you had to pay it for yourself. enlisted soldiers in the United States Army had a clothing allowance of: two caps; one hat; one fatigue forage cap; one pompon; one eagle and ring; one cover; two coats; three pairs of "trowsers;" three flannel shirts; three pairs of flannel drawers; four pairs of bootees; four pairs of stockings; one great coat; and one blanket.

My entire cav kit will be home-made (except for the leather).

The leatherwork alone costs me around 350,- euro, and theres about 50-75 euro worth of brass and iron on top of that.

Not counting the leather for the pants (65,-) and shako (+\-200).

But Dordak's suggestion is abetter investment.  Sekela, Tim Bender, and Dirty Billys. They got fantastic stuff.

some clubs are farby, yes, but they are mostly the ones that only do combat and not the actual living history.

Such as Danelaw Medieval Society, they are only combat but their equipment is farby.

But people like me and Dave Sanders, dont like farby stuff one bit. We pretty much kick anyone out of the camp who has farby gear or they have to camp away from us, an exception was made to me because im injured.

And at Hastings in 2006, every single piece of gear that was brought onto the grounds by a reenactor had to be accurate to within a 15 year period, from 1050 to 1066. Whether it was chainmail whether it was a tooth pick, everything had to be historically accurate.

I looked on their site, they look a bit more like they're meant to be a creative anachronism thing to me.

If not then the surcoats and maille hauberks combined with bracers and hourglass gauntlets are actually going to make me cringe.
