Napoleonic Wars as an esports
« on: April 13, 2015, 12:23:01 am »
Hi all,

We have recently seen a lot of tournaments popping up around the place such as Napoleonic Wars League and Napoleonic Linebattle Cup. Most of these tournaments have been quite successful and have attracted the best regiments from around the globe to compete. My question to you is do you ever see Napoleonic wars or a game like it (BCoF or Vanilla mount and blade warband/bannerlord for example) and what do you think would be the next step for the game in terms of growing it's esports tournaments. Would it be growing accomadation for spectators or bigger prize pools? I've heard certain leagues talk about Twitch streaming. We have already seen many great regiments of the game (14e, 92nd, 91st for example) and I just thought it would be a nice idea to talk about. Let me know what you guys think :)

The game would need to have a constantly growing playerbase and popularity.

Napoleonic Wars could do with an update.

Try joining a regular Napoleonic Wars server and then re-running the installer.

Yeah. Obviously it would need a growing playerbase but if there was a new version such a BCoF or a new NW for bannerlord then maybe we would have the chance to achieve that goal :)

An update to the DLC itself, L'Aigle is shaping up to be a great singleplayer mod but it would be really refreshing to see a community supported update to the multiplayer side.

Yeah in later updates it will have multiplayer, and I'm sure the NW will flock to L'Aigle once this is the case.

I dont think NW or BCoF will ever get a e-Sports following, mainly because they just are not fun to watch. From tournaments to LBs, NW is very slow paced and not really filled with much action. Sure the gameplay is fun and addictive, and thats all well and good, but not even the most addicted of NW addicts watch LBs on a regular basis, and you cant really have an E-Sports without viewers (goodluck getting sponsors if nobody watches u kek). Also the team play in NW is just not near as interesting as it is in other games with E-Sports scenes, as most other competitive games have interesting and unique roles/classes/positions that players fulfill that just makes chatting/watching the game more interesting. For example, its fun comparing teams based on x or y roles like "Oh I think rando scrando is better at x role than scrando rando on y team, but y team has a better z role" but NW does not really have that at all. I doubt BCoF will be any different (if not worse), however I do have hope for Bannerlords as it does not suffer many of these issues as it is fast paced (if it doesnt get bogged down in camping), has intense matches, is fun to watch, and it has unique classes and roles (Archer/Footman/Cav). I could really foresee Dignitas vs. Cloud 9 Bannerlord scrims.

I think money as price and twitch streams would be a great next step.

I made a thread about something along the lines of this.

The reality you have to face is, Napoleonic Wars will never be an eSport. The genre of the game and the game in itself(in my opinion) is not capable of sustaining a large community with events casted and supported by a vast majority of it.

I think money as price and twitch streams would be a great next step.

It would be a good next step, and im not sure if the EU community is different, but I know that even the biggest of NA tournies/LBs would probably never break 100 viewers (even with the participants watching the stream themselves), and all of those viewers would already be playing competitive NW already so it would not really get NW any attention.
