To be honest it simply looks like he's been through so much shit that his kilt simply got too damaged to use any more.
Scottish kilted soldiers had to wear kilts, unless in winter conditions, and if a soldier lost or damaged his kilt they'd have two pay for a replacement, around to two or three weeks' pay. I honestly, don't know how in 2-3 weeks the trousers got damaged that much.
its quite obvious on campaign, i am sure they did not carried many replacement kilt with them and instead gave him whatever they found.
Having perfect uniforms was an essential part of the British army. Whether it be officer or uniform, they were expected to have clean uniforms, or else they'd suffer punishments. Of course there will be a little bit of mud on the uniform and a patch on the campaign, but I honestly... what's happened to that highlander.
