In Libya the USA only provided air support. The USA government has already declared not in any scenario to start a ground war in Syria, so I'm convinced (And, actually, happy) that the USA will do the same in Syria as Libya.

And if somehow the Syrians manage to fuck up royally after the war is over and another dictator is installed, I'll officially lose all faith in humanity.

I agree with this so much it's stupid.

Sad thing about the Syrian civil war : There's just no good side. Assad is a ruthless dictator, the rebels range from simply being Anti-Assad, to radical Muslims. Who-ever wins the war, shit will get fucked up. There are minority groups (Kurds, Christians) who simply support Assad because they fear being discriminated (To put it softly) if Assad loses power. And who can blame them? I sure won't. They are fighting to survive.

The only way to avoid Syria becoming a bloodbath the following years is intervention by a third party, and possible a UN mandate.

"But sovereignty! Syria is it's own country!"
Sure. And 80.000 killed people is 80.000 killed people. Since when is a right that has been trampled for lesser reasons more holy then the lifes of thousands of human beings?  I've been getting a lot of hate for supporting an intervention, and I understand that. I repeat: I do not support any side in the Syrian Civil war. But whatever is exactly happening in Syria right now, whoever did it, it must stop. It doesn't matter who will win - If we let things run its own course it's bound to be mass blood bad.

Sadly, i dont think the UN can really do anything.

Russia and maybe China will veto every single resolution on Syria.

Which is why I'm not terribly pissed at the USA doing something on their own.

Russia says no to everything the US wants.

It's like they're the republicans to Obama.

Serious why in the living hell does Russia still want us dead? The Cold War is OVER.

From the same reasons you want Russia dead, it's a closed cycle.

I don't want Russia dead. I may be against communism but as I've said before on these forums it's up to the nation to choose it's form of government.

Hell most people in the US don't see Russia as the USSR, they just see Russia as that nation that likes to fuck with us every chance they get.

We can turn it like the "spirit of rival". The US politics didnt change after Cold War, and remember the 3rd Newton's law of movement, "The strength of action equals to strength of counter-action" For every action always will be counter-action ;)

This is really the first time I've been majorly disappointed in President Obama. America is not the world's police and if China and Russia had the audacity to attempt and deny Syrian crimes only one or two years ago, imagine what they will do if the US was to invade. The UK will not back us up and China and Russia will back up Syria. This is how it starts. A series of small proxy wars escalates to a world wide conflict. Syria is the new Serbia or Poland and I fear if a war between these three major powers erupts, one is not leaving alive.
That's all i really have to say on the issue.
'Murica

And of course by the next time I have something to say on an issue I could be typing it from a hidden insurgent camp

Aye. It has nothing to do with the fact that most of what 'we' want are sanctions and military strikes against their allies, of course.

And of course by the next time I have something to say on an issue I could be typing it from a hidden insurgent camp

Having an insurgent camp away from the population is a bad* idea. They make wonderful drone/helicopter/bombing targets. As much as I hate what happened with the Middle Eastern insurgencies, hiding among civilians, and in caves, are the only reasons they've lasted so long. And as we have a.. lack of caves in the United States, working with the civilian populations will be that much more important.

- Thomas' Insurgency advice for the day

* Emphasis provided to show just how bad of an idea this is.

And, as many could probably have already guessed, I am entirely against getting involved in the Syrian conflict, beyond humanitarian aid. It is a war with so many different 'bad guys', and no 'good guys', and getting involved at all, unless we seek to establish our own government within the nation independent of either side, our involvement would only cause more bloodshed than we'd hope to prevent. Tomahawk Missiles aren't exactly.. particular about who may be near what they're aimed at..

Again, stay out of Syria. Politically it is a lose-lose situation, so to do nothing is perhaps the best option.

1) Support the rebels who are supplied by and working with Al-Qaeda.
2) Support the government in putting down a revolt.
3) Do nothing and take flak for it from France/a few others, but allow the Syrian government to reassert itself in a positive manner towards America.

Practicality is the basis of international politics, not humanitarianism. The latter is for volunteers, not nations.

If you still think the west should get involved in Syria, I would watch this. Absolutely shocking story

Poll kinda looks like my junk  ::)

I do not think the west should get involved, especially the USA with our amazing track record of what we've done in Iraq and Afghanistan.
