♞ [Merged with GcE] Chasseurs-à-cheval de la Garde Impériale
« on: February 02, 2015, 09:11:33 pm »

The Chasseurs-à-cheval de la Garde Impériale is an European cavalry company and a group of good friends where pleasant humour, fun and entertainment are never lacking. The recruitment is open to all kinds of players - from new ones to veterans - as long as they meet our etiquette. Like other gamers we like fun and jokes but as we aim to be a skilled and structured unit, we believe that strong discipline is also essential. Our members are expected to be respectful towards both external members of the community and other members of our regiment. Great deeds, mature behaviour and progress are rewarded in the Chasseurs-à-cheval through promotions and medals while inappropriate manners, disrespect and repeated absences may lead to warnings or punishments. Corporal punishment is however strictly banned from our company.

On the battlefield, we try to reproduce a true Chasseurs-à-cheval regiment gameplay. It means that, basically, we are mostly skirmishing and harassing other regiments during linebattles. As did the mounted chasseurs during the Napoleonic wars, our horses are used for both tactical deployment and charge. Therefore, our chasseurs must be efficient at shooting & melee fighting. Do not worry if you are not comfortable with those skills: a biweekly training is organized to train the required skills. In order to fight with a musket we have to pick the French dragoon troop ingame, whose uniforms and equipment were changed into historically accurate chasseurs de la Garde clothes. However, since December 2015, we play as hussars for friendly and competitive cavalry matches.

If you are interested to join or if you want more information, add me on steam (You will find the link below).

The regiment was created under the name "8e Régiment de Chasseurs-à-cheval" in February 2015 as a new unit within the French 5th Army Corps (Ve), it was first of group of French friends who gradually started recruiting English speaking players. The regiment was then expanded to two companies of chasseurs. In April, the 8eCC agreed on a partnership with the North American Nr18 regiment, the agreement lasted a little less than two months but successfully enabled the 8eCC to keep good average player attendance. The regiment successfully won the 2nd Division of the 5vs5 CNWL in August 2015. In December, after 10 months of active service the 8eCC left the 5th Corps (Ve) and joined the Consular Guard. It was then decided to rename the regiment and adopt a new roleplay. The new roleplay and name who enabled us to become more historically accurate. As a lot of documents on the history of the Chasseurs-à-cheval de la Garde survived, we are able to portray soldiers that historically fought in the regiment between 1800 and 1802. It will also the opportunity to wear fully historically accurate fancy uniforms of the pompous Chasseurs of the Guard.

After a short stay in the GC, we left the corps to form our own structure with the Régiment de Grenadiers à Pied de la Vieille Garde and the Régiment de Chasseurs à Pied de la Vieille Garde in order to recreate the famous Imperial Guard of the French napoleonic army.

"The dragoons and the chasseurs were the most numerous French cavalry. The horse chasseurs were light cavalry and were often brigaded with the hussars. The most famous was the Infernal Brigade (9th Hussars, 7th and 20th Chasseurs) commanded by General Colbert. Two other brigades worth mention are Col. Soult's Brigade (8th Hussars, 16th and Chasseurs) and Gen. Pajol's Brigade (5th and 7th Hussars, 3rd Chasseurs). The chasseurs-à-cheval thought being equal to hussars, the hussars however thought otherwise. Frequent quarrels arose between the two on the most triffling pretext. Chasseurs were probably the most universal type of French cavalry. They were best suited to reconnaissance duties and small warfare but they were also capable of dismounted action like the dragoons. The chasseurs would also sometimes charge in a pitched battle."

There are many notable example of their action. "On 8th February 1814 a half squadron of 31st Chasseur captured 150 Austrian infantry near Massimbona. Another squadron captured 300 infantry between Marengo and Roverbella. Even the scouts of the regiment did something to be proud of, they captured an Austrian baggage column, which was moving into Villafranca with its escort." In 1805 at Austerlitz 5th and 26th Chasseurs captured Allies flag. In 1809 at Wagram, Colbert's 'Infernal Brigade' (9th Hussars, 7th and 20th Chasseurs) rushed against Austrian infantry. The 7th Chasseurs was greeted with musket volley and fell back. Colbert was seriously wounded. The 20th Chasseurs moved against the square that had just repulsed the 7th. Despite having emptied their muskets the infantrymen were standing firm. The chasseurs however attacked and broke the square. Other square was broken by the 9th Hussars. Now Oudinot advanced against Wagram and took it."

It is also said that many chasseurs kept their hair braided like the hussars and were proud of their mustaches. Charles Parquin, a chasseur of the 20th famously wrote: "to my grief, my moustache had refused to grow despite constant encouragement with the razor."

The chasseurs used a sabre with a slightly curved blade, they were armed also with carbines and bayonets. The bayonets were disliked by cavalrymen, they were used for digging up the potatoes and then threw away. Their uniforms were clean, they were more disciplined than the hussars, and they took good care of their weapons and equipment.

The Chasseurs-à-cheval from the Imperial Guard were the favorite regiment of Napoleon. His personal escort was formed of veterans selected from all the chasseur regiments and he often wore the green redingote, which was the colonel's uniform of the chasseurs.

The Old Guard was formed in 1798 to protect the three Consuls and among them Napoleon under the name of Consular Guard. And this name was kept until the Empire was proclamed and Bonaparte crowned in 1804. In 1800, the Consular Guard consisted of : a general staff, a light infantry company, two batalions of grenadiers, a company of mounted chasseurs, two scadrons of mounted grenadiers and a company of artillery. The Old Guard was part of the Imperial Guard and was formed of the Foot Grenadiers, Foot Chasseurs, Horse Grenadiers and Horse Chasseurs. Polish Lancers and Mameluks also joined the Old Guard later on.

The company of mounted chasseurs (Chasseurs-à-cheval de la Garde Consulaire and later Regiment of Chasseurs-à-cheval de la Garde Impériale) regrouped the mounted guides of the campaign of Italy and Egypt during which they had been useful to scout and skirmish. They were already praised by Napoleon himself. He brought them back to France where he integrated officially the company in the Garde with new uniforms, a new name and a new leader : Captaine Eugène de Beauharnais, the 19 years old son-in-law of Napoleon.

They were in 1800 not as famous as they would become but it's the numerous skilled juniors officers, sub-officers and devoted rankers that formed the myth and the prestige of this regiment. Many of them would become great generals in the Great Army. And by 1804 they were already one of the most prestigious unit of cavalry of its time.

Their most glorious deeds are probably their charges at Austerlitz and Eylau against the Russians but they received the honors for many battles:

1800: Marengo
1805: Ulm, Austerlitz
1807: Eylau, Friedland
1809: Eckmühl, Wagram
1812: Smolensk, Moskova
