No, no, no... skins are working fine (or at least were working for over two years). You need to copy all files to your NW directory and allow windows to replace all files. I guess now, that you're talking about names of dds files, which are in fact different than original NW textures' names. But there are also brf and txt files which make game use my files instead of original NW ones. You don't have to rename anything. Just download whole archive of skin you want from Google Drive and copy it's content to NW directory (from resource folder to resource folder, from textures folder to textures folder, etc). They just have to work, there's no other option if you're doing everything correctly.
