Tell me throwing that takes no athleticism, if you don't think that you're stupid, it's not just throwing a pitch and hitting the pitch thrown at you. It takes extreme skill to throw pitches like these and also incredible hand eye coordination and strength to hit them

Tell me throwing that takes no athleticism, if you don't think that you're stupid, it's not just throwing a pitch and hitting the pitch thrown at you. It takes extreme skill to throw pitches like these and also incredible hand eye coordination and strength to hit them
so 1 guy on a team of 9 is active?congrats

Texas is full of scumbags like Rougned Odor, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre etc. The Jays have an on-going rivalry with Texas after we beat them in the post-season. We both hate each other. Kansas is the same way, their pitchers aren't the most likeable characters. Edinson Volquez, Yordano Ventura, Cueto. The post-season has left a sour taste in my mouth of those teams. Really just a bunch of goons.

Very important aspect. In cars or architecture too. I agree.

Someone needs to make a 2016 compilation of pitches thrown behind, above, or straight at Donaldson. Not sure if it would fit in the 15 minute time limit though...

If we blow this fucking wild card spot there's got to be changes (actually scratch that, we need changes regardless both long term and immediate).

11 wins from 27 games since the start of September is disgraceful for a team with playoff ambitions (let alone deep-run/WS ambitions). Yesterday's performance (which may now end up being the last home game this year) was one of the most pathetic performances I've seen in the MLB this year. Not simply the fact they got shut out and overall played like dogshit, but that it seemed like 90% of the players ran out of fucks to give by the bottom of the 3rd.

The real killer too is 31 losses out of the bullpen. For perspective the Orioles only have 14 or so losses out of the pen. Not going anywhere when you basically need at least a 2 or 3 run lead for them to hang on with any reliability.

Edit: But wait there's more! Let's look at some other fun Jays stats:

-24th in the league in hits (1335)
-23rd in the league in batting average (.248)
-22nd in the league in batting average with runners in scoring position (.250)
-11th most strikeouts with runners in scoring position (317)
-8th most strikeouts overall (1336)
-1st in the league (most/in a bad way) in GDP (Grounded into Double-Play) (150)
-4th worst BAA in the league (Opponents' batting average) (.242)
-10th worst bullpen ERA in the league (4.08)
-3rd most losses out of the bullpen in the league (31)

That is some great research. Braves are playing hot right now  8)

Hopefully the Braves can beat the Tigers in this series since we kinda need them to win in order to keep our Wild Card spot against them.

Aaand we get stuck with playing Boston, great. The Jays have been playing so badly. We had the division pretty much, all we had to do is play .500 baseball, maybe a little better, but we really let our shit go.

The Cubs bullpen is complete shit outside of Duensing, Strop and Davis. Edwards is either walking the batter or giving up gopher balls. Rondon has been a complete bum since he lost his closer spot last year. Justin Wilson hasn't even been used in a high leverage situation because he sucked some ass in the regular season. I'm not declaring the series over, but the offense needs a serious 180 and the starters need to go atleast 7 innings or so because of how untrustworthy the bullpen has been this postseason.

Roberts threw away the series in Games 2. Hill could have taken that game deeper, saving the relievers, probably winning that game. Wood could have gone a lot deeper into Game 4, too. I got the sense that whole series that the Dodgers were the better team, but Roberts had no clue what he was doing. He was too busy making moves and doing all the fun manager stuff to think about whether he was going to improve his team's chances to win by doing so. Meanwhile, Hinch was brilliant.

Star of the series for me was Bregman. Defensively, he was like Clete Boyer in '61 or Brooks Robinson in '70. I don't think he made a poor play all series (scorekeeper gave him Gurriel's error in Game 2) and came up with a ton of great plays. Seemed like there was one every night. He only had seven hits, but it seemed like every one of his hits started a rally or knocked in a run. He doesn't have Springer's fancy line, but I was impressed by him.

I don't know, if Kershaw pitches like he did in the division series, I like the Dodgers' chances. They have four good starters they can run out there who, Dave Roberts willing, can get more than halfway through a game. Counsell hasn't given his starters inning all year long (even Chacin averaged 5.5). I'd like to see the Brewers win just because I like the idea of the team with the most wins in their league winning a pennant, but starting pitching has won an awful lot of series .

Boston has Sale and a better offense, at least, but Houston have six starters on their roster, three of whom averaged more than 6 innings (which isn't that great, but it means they're surviving the modern bullpen fetish an inning longer than most of the league).

If Houston's and LA's starters falter, they're in trouble, but I think I like their chances more than the teams who rely entirely on their bullpen.

I pretty much agree. Houston is a beast and so are the Dodgers but LA always seems to flop in the post season for some reason so yeah while I think they're gonna beat Milwaukee technically I think it's an easy upset for the Brewers. Red Sox have a lot of the pieces they needed to get this far and if David Price could win a playoff game or even play well in the playoffs for once in his life and if the Sox have some good starts it could be a closer series than you think.

If Verlander, Morton, and Cole can hold the Mookie and the Sox at bay, then they have a pretty good chance of winning provided they go for more than 6 innings.  Altuve and Springer have to pick up their game though.  If the divisional against the Yankees showed us anything, even a minor screwup from the Houston starters or bullpen is gonna end badly.

It's because Girardi was the key. Boone is not a good manager but hopefully we improve next year with Bryce Harper on the team.

Judge didn't do that bad. He just didn't hit bombs, only 2 in 4 games. He had the best average on the Yankees at .375, going 6 for 16 and struck out twice. If that is garbage, then I have to know what "okay" is.

Giancarlo was bad though. He had a .222 average, going 4 for 18 striking out six times.

Mookie went 3 for 3 against Cole this season, as well as going 2 for 3 against Morton. He hasn't faced Verlander this season though. Last season against Verlander he went 1 for 8... so maybe.

Man Game 3 was like two games in one. Nathan Eovaldi, even though he allowed the walk off, was lights out the 6 innings he pitched. Definitely doesn't deserve the L, but that's baseball for ya. Game 4 will be interesting to see who is the starter for the Red Sox. My guess is Sale on short rest, it has to be tbh.
Title: Re: Baseball Thread [World Series 18']
Post by: Xethos on October 27, 2018, 10:11:58 am
The game that wouldn't end. If Roberts will let Hill go more than four innings tomorrow today, they're in decent shape. Their problem is that instead of having a second starter come in to finish the game, they used every single reliever they have, so they need length from a guy whom Roberts is allergic to giving five innings.

Red Sox could start Sale, but he has never started on three days rest in his career following another start. They could also start Pomeranz, who had an awful year but is a starter. Rodriguez started 23 games and he only pitched an out. Kelly threw 12 pitches, so he can cover multiple innings. They have some options.

Basically, another 15 innings for game 4 would be great!

Hill absolutely should have finished the 7th. The Red Sox couldn't hit him all game, but they lit up everybody in that bullpen at one point or another in the previous three games.

Maybe it's because I'm old school, maybe I'm overreacting, but I have an idea that Kershaw needs to pitch a complete game victory today for the Dodgers to have a chance . . . and that even if he's throwing a shutdown, Roberts will take him out after a single in the sixth and put Madson back in.

Yawn I called this World Series and result in the summer. Most predictable season of baseball other than the Brewers. Yankees gonna win it in either 2019 or 2020 so it's all good.

Yankees gonna win it in either 2019 or 2020 so it's all good.

Let's break that down as the Yankees are going to possibly lose these six "big name" players to FA:

Zach Britton - 1-0 2.88 ERA in 25 games (3 Saves). ALDS 2.25 ERA in 4 IP, not bad. He had an ERA of 3.45 in Baltimore before being traded.

J.A. Happ - 7-0 2.69 ERA in 11 games. 63 Ks in 63.2 IP. Potential last start as a Yankee was in the ALDS against Boston: 2 IP 4 H 5 ER. Yikes. He had an ERA of 4.18 in Toronto before being traded.

Lance Lynn - 3-2 with an ERA of 4.14 in 11 games (9 started). Last start was in the ALDS where he pitched 2 games with 2.1 IP with 3 ER and an ERA of 11.57. He had an ERA 5.10 of in Minnesota before being traded.

Andrew McCutchen - .253/.421/.471 in 87 AB (147 PA) in 25 games. He went 2-for-15 (.133) in the ALDS. He had a slash line of .255/.357/.415 with the Giants prior to being traded.

David Robertson - 8-3 with an ERA of 3.23 in 69 games. He did pretty well in the ALDS, 2.2 IP in 2 games, out of 9 batters faced he struck out 6 and walked 1.

CC Sabathia - 9-7 with an ERA of 3.65 in 29 games. 3 IP in the ALDS with an ERA of 9.00.

This player has an opt-out, either by player or by club:

Brett Gardner, Club Option - .236/.322/.368 in 530 AB (609 PA). In the ALDS he went 1-for-8 in 12 PA. He walked 3 times and struck out once in 4 games.

Because he is a good consistent power hitter but his average had been below expectations the past 2 or 3 years now. Usually people who go to a new team who get big contracts like A-Rod, Machado or even Donaldson start out slow and get comfortable then they start playing well. I think Bryce will have 30 HR and 100 RBIs by the end of the season.

Mike Trout has two extra years to build up WAR in that period. If you take Pujols Average between the years you listed, which is 7.84, and multiply that by two it totals to 15.68. Now add that to the total you had listed and its near even with, i'm terrible at math so correct me if i'm wrong, the advantage going to Pujols with a total of 70.58 WAR. In no way am I saying that Trout is bad, or even close to not being ONE of the goats, but we have seen these numbers before. Pujols dropped off, and Trout probably won't. However, don't discount someone like Pujols who had one of the best careers of any player in existence.

I also do now realize Trout didn't have a full 2011. So my averages dont completely work out how I want them too. However, the WAR is still relatively close, and, while WAR is near all encompassing in its intention of rating a player, it is not the only stat and shouldn't be the only thing considered when comparing the best players to ever exist.
Title: Re: Baseball Thread
Post by: Mexican on July 18, 2019, 08:19:08 pm
The great thing about WAR is that it accounts for the strength of the competition and the meta of the period in which the player played in. So for example in the early 2000s when everyone was on steroids, there were many power hitters who were able to rack up the stats vs the 2010s where pitchers are much more dominant, we’re less likely to see power hitting stats. The only argument here would be wether the WAR stat itself is accurate or not. I am assuming it is.

The other argument you could make is that Trout had an extra year so that comparison can’t be made. I would say though that the older you are (to a degree) you are much more likely to do well in the majors. So I don’t think Pujols would have done as well at 20 as he did at 21.
Title: Re: Baseball Thread
Post by: Vertildr on July 18, 2019, 08:42:21 pm
Would your statements about how WAR changes based on the era prove that his war would be higher in today's age? He had been proven clean from multiple tests in relation to use of steroids and he still had those numbers. Would his stats be affected by the effectiveness of sterioid use by other players?
Title: Re: Baseball Thread
Post by: Vertildr on July 18, 2019, 08:48:02 pm
Additionally, I doubt the validity of the speculation concerning younger age in performance primarily for pujols. His stats are consistent and even looks better in his first year than compared to even some of his later years as a cardinal.

Title: Re: Baseball Thread
Post by: Mexican on July 18, 2019, 09:31:31 pm
It might be higher in today's age but pitchers are so strong now it's hard to be sure. IT does suck that he was a clean slugger in an age of roided sluggers, but that was the meta of the time so every strategy revolved around power hits. Pitchers in the early 2000s weren't as prioritized either and as a result pitching quality was pretty garb (Ben Sheets, Cliff Lee, Tim Lincecum were all starting pitchers for the All Star teams in 08-09, Pujols' best years) so that should be considered.
Title: Re: Baseball Thread

Tim Lincecum has a strong 4 years with the giants. His career declined quickly because of how aggressive his pitching motion was. He isn’t that athletic  to be able to pitch like that very effectively for a long time. Cliff Lee was one of the big 3 on the Phillies team. They had some great years but were of course a off brand version of the Braves big 3 or the Orioles big 3. Both pitchers were really good so don’t discredit them!!

Albert is currently at, if baseball-reference is up to date, 647 HRs. Aaron finished with 755. That's 108 HRs. Pujols is signed through 2021, I believe. That would be his age-41 season. I don't think he can pass Hank Aaron on the all-time HR list. I think he could definitely pass Willie Mays (660) and MAYBE, if he has a decent year, he could pass A-Rod (696) but I think that is a BIG MAYBE. He is; however, a future first ballot Hall of Famer, and we cannot deny that.

Congrats to the Nationals for advancing to the NLCS. I am shocked they beat the Dodgers, but I'm glad they did. They fought hard and deserved the win. I don't think they have the ability to beat the Cardinals, but I didn't think they had the ability to beat the Dodgers, so maybe they have a chance to make a World Series appearance.

LMAO Kershaw be like. Choked Three times already

Wanna see me do it again?

If you're offense you hit the ball. If you're defense you catch the ball.

A better explanation: http://www.howbaseballworks.com/TheBasics.htm

Also how the fuck is Kershaw doing good. 13 K's through 8 in a postseason game is highly unusual for him. I predict that this will not last.

I'm glad our bullpen guys know how to throw batting practice to the dodgers. Also sucks that Riley's high IQ baserunning costed us the inning and that HR rob by Betts was nice though. Next year we will finally have a good 1-3 or 1-4 rotation to use.

I don't really think it was any fault of Riley's, more of Swanson. Swanson should have waited for the ball to go by, and not have gone on contact. Most players try to get to third if someone is in a rundown to mitigate the damage. Turner just made a great play on Riley, who was almost safe. Swanson just looked lost.

last time there was a major sport dual champion was in 2009 with the Steelers and Penguins I believe

Rays down 0-1 tho not lookin 2 good ... though if they somehow win this World Series I'll cheer for the Buccaneers the rest of the NFL season

Best playoff game in quite a few years. Jansen should have backed up, but it would not have changed anything. If he was were he was supposed to be, the ball would have still went passed him to the right.

Interesting to see where Story is going to get sent to. I don't see a reason to keep him for the rockies. So many teams already got their shortstops though, at least on contenders who would want to get him. I thought the Phillies but they just resigned gregorious.

Buzzing over us singing Arenado. Wish we were able to keep Wong. We could've had the best infield in the league. But Mozeliak said we are done yet, Bauer and Ozuna on our radar so we'll see.
Title: Re: Baseball Thread
Post by: Vertildr on February 04, 2021, 09:07:01 pm
I don't see us getting either sadly. Bauer just seems way out of the pay range of the team and is not in the area where we really seem to need support imo. Ozuna seems nice, but I doubt they want to crowd the outfield more.

I would like to remind you that the Angels are an Anaheim team, which is in Orange county, despite the organization's attempt to fool the rest of the country that it is an LA team. Also I'm not gonna cheer for a team that is wasting the career of one of the best players to ever touch the game.

When I was growing up, the Dodgers were always beaten by the Giants and Chad Billingsley was their best pitcher.

I'll save my hatred of large market sports teams for the Lakers.

But I am glad the Padres are finally seeing their day. :^)))))

They were actually originally the Los Angeles Angels, and they even played in Dodger Stadium for four years. Then they renamed to the California Angels and moved to Anaheim. (And then the Anaheim Angels, and then the all time great name, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim).

Now the real Los Angeles Angels were the Pacific Coast League team from the PCL's first year as an independent league until the Dodgers forced them out, but that's a different story.

‘The film has a rating of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 27 reviews, with an average rating of 4.22/10. The site's consensus reads, "A queasy mishmash of poignant drama and slapstick fantasy, Angels in the Outfield strikes out as worthy family entertainment."’

Im sorry that you grew up watching corporate american propaganda. Wasn’t even an original screenplay it was a remake of a 1951 cash grab lmfaoo

Apparently Disney was partial owner of the Angels and had a vested interest in promoting the org.

Well first of all movie critics don't know what the fuck they talking bout them mfs said the new Star Wars trilogy was good among other atrocities and it doesn't have to be approved by critics to be enjoyable.
And I probably grew up in the best era of baseball movies to come out ever during the 90s and 00s,

But that's cool and all u just gon' hate cuz you're a Dodgers fan and it's an Angels movie but it's a good debut for Joeseph Gordon-Levitt and a memorable film overall.

If you like to understand what is beneath the game and how hard it actually is, its quite enjoyable to watch the battle between pitcher and hitter. I played it during my childhood and also was something I watched and went to a lot with my grandpa, so its just always been something I liked.

Baseball is America's pastime :)

there's no carrying like in basketball or Traumatic brain injuries like in football

every at bat is a duel between the pitcher and the batter with an immensely high skill ceiling.

It also has a rich history

not trying to hate, how tf do you watch this shit
u must have an attention span longer than this line <------->
if you do not meet those requirements idk maybe watch hockey or something

also radio baseball is goated like fart said just slap it on in the background and chill
I do have a very short attention span and I do like to watch hockey although its kinda hard to follow at times because theres so many games they play

I also played baseball until like high school but I equate it to watching golf
Speaking of golf did you see that Japanese feller' Matsyuama win the Masters??? First JAP to win ! Great weekend of golf ya just missed

Ahhh shit now I'm starting to sound like a Dad, anyway I'm sure you'll come around to it.. some sports are just slow paced and you have to watch/listen with a different mindset than you usually would with faster sports, at least that's what I found

Posey is an automatic HoFer just depends if he's first ballot or not, which I think he prolly should be. Dude's the best catcher of this decade easily. His numbers stack up with the greats. He has 3 rings and a ton of awards. And he didn't even play last season on top of all that. He's also like the Derek Jeter of San Francisco. Dude has been nothing but great since he's been there and people love him, so I think the media gets him in first try.

maybe but imo i doubt it has to do with that, he won his ring with the braves now he'll go where the money is.. the dodgers can shell out enough cash to sign any player they want, its gonna be hard to turn them down when they give you gigantic fucking contracts like that
