Developer Blog 11 - 1st Battle of Bull Run

Hello and welcome back to the eleventh Developer Blog! This week we have mainly been working on scenes and we will present you some first screenshots of our first map today.

While the First Battle of Bull Run, also known as the First Battle of Manassas, was not the largest or the most important Battle of the American Civil War, it still was the first major Battle of the American Civil War and up to that point, the largest battle in American History.

It is one of the most known battles in American history which is one of the reasons we chose to make a map for it. The map is going to be 3.5 kilometers in diameter and it will feature several well known landmarks of the battlefield such as the Old Stone House, still visible today. Speaking of which, here is a screenshot of the Old Stone House which was used as hospital during, and after the battle.

The second screenshot shows the Robinson House, a small house that was owned by the Robinson Family. It took no major part during the actual battle, but it was very close to the battlefield and a small wooden bridge. Whoever gains control of the Robinson House, will also gain control of the bridge.

Thank you for reading the eleventh dev blog and see you next week!

I agree with Craig, it looks like it can house 20 people max, but that might only be the angle tough.

It wasnt built as a hospital, probably occupied and turned into one during the battle.

Never said it did, but it is still small for a hospital. And yes i know it really excisted and stuff, but it was and is still small.

Thanks mates!

And yes, the Stonehouse was used as hospital during the battle and after it. It had about 20-40 wounded soldiers and one surgeon. Scales of the buildings are more or less exactly as they are in reality. They are just a bit taller. We have to make them taller, or otherwise the 3rd person camera will bump into the ceiling and will make it impossible to play indoors.

Can you like enter the houses? or are they just props?

All our buildings will have interior and will be fully destructible. There will be nothing that can not be entered or destructed.

Have you guys done any rough models yet? I'd like to scale this up with a player. Otherwise, this is getting me closer to donating.

We are currently working on it, but haven't finished it yet. I have some rulers in the game though. You can actually see one of them in the stonewall screenshot, at the far left. This white cube is a 1*1 meter cube I use for scaling.

Will there be destructible trees? I thought it was kind of cool how in bf3 you could knock down trees with artillery and explosives. Also, will rubble from fallen buildings become a dynamic part of the environment or will it disappear after the smoke has cleared like in NW?

It would have been more of a medical HQ. There would be many tents outside because, you are right, they couldn't fit hundreds, possibly thousands in that house.

Interesting Fact: Many people went to watch Bull Run because they all thought it would be a quick Union Victory(quite the opposite). So perhaps on the very outskirts of the map, you could have abandoned picnic sets and wagons that were tipped over when the chaos reached the spectating point.

From what I understand, no. The map editor for this mod requires each user to buy his own license, so unless you buy yourself(some guys in the community will surely) you can't create maps.

From what I understand, no. The map editor for this mod requires each user to buy his own license, so unless you buy yourself(some guys in the community will surely) you can't create maps.

I'm not sure if this will necessarily be the case.  Look the Unity Pro vs Unity Free features--when it comes to straight coding or scene creation the two are largely the same.

However, Unity Free doesn't come with LOD -- Level of Detail -- native support, which is rather important when it comes to large and detailed scenes.  Maybe FSE could find a way to script around this.  (Come to think of it, I have no idea how LOD will work with destructible props, but I'm sure Vince and co will figure a good system out.)  Only time will tell :)

Am i the only one who noticed the white block in the first pic  :o And battle of bull run? *Cough* NaS any one  *cough*

The white block is something the devs use to get an idea of the scale because it's 1m x 1m x 1m.

And ofcourse because a mod used one of the most historical important battles as an idea, the new game can't because it isn't original to take the most important battles as a map. How silly of FSE.

nice, here's a pic of a model depicting the Stone House that was meant for an unreleased mod, though missing the bars in the basement windows. I'll see if I can dig it up..Btw shouldn't the Robinson house be white or was it painted after 1st Man? Will there be a Judith Henry House aswell?

From the Spotsylvania map, will BcF have trench maps like Petersburg and Cold Harbor?
