The first initiative to create a Polish unit of Hussars was taken up with Napoleon by Prince Jan Nepomucen Sułkowski in 1807. Despite this, the Regiment was ultimately created in 1809 in Lublin from conscripts drafted from the following districts: lubelskie, zamojskie, bialskie and stanisławowskie. Up until 28th of December of the same year, the regiment was known as 1st Galician-French Hussar Regiment. Its units were stationed in the villages of: Węgrów, Sokołów and Liw. At the end of the year 1809 the regiment had numbered 1048 soldiers. The regiment was first organised and commanded by Colonel Józef Toliński (18 June 1809), afterwards the Regiment was commanded by Colonel Józef Sokolnicki (from February 1813). |

The Russian Campaign During the Napoleon’s Russian Campaign in 1812 the 13th Hussar Regiment went to war as part of V Corps commanded by Prince Józef Poniatowski, along with the 5th Chasseur-a-Cheval Regiment they formed the forward guard of the entire Corps (20th Cavalry Brigade) The Regiment was under the Command of Colonel Józef Toliński and at the beginning of the campaign it was composed of: 33 officers, 722 non-commissioned officers and hussars, and it had 83 officer horses, 717 soldier horses and 32 supply trains. Being a part of the right flank of the Grande Armée during the difficult march through marshes of Polesie the Regiment was designated with the task of reconnaissance and screening. The 13th Hussar Regiment along with 3rd Ulan Regiment and battery of horse artillery first saw action on the 17th of August at the Battle of Smolensk. They received an order to break and route a unit of enemy cavalry which was covering the approach to the City. They successfully completed the task despite the heavy fire coming from the walls of the Fortress. At the Battle of Borodino, the Regiment fought as a part of Cavalry of the V Polish Corps at the village of Utica. They entered the combat at around 16.00 and struck the left flank of the already engaged Russian Corps commanded by Karl Gustav Baggovut. In the first wave the charge was led by squadron of Captain Stanisław Gawroński, upon the attack they formed a loose and wide formation. Behind them the rest of the remaining squadrons where following the attack supported by the 12th Ulan Regiment.. The Regiment as a part of thinned out V Corps took part in the pursuit after the Kutozov’s Army. On 29th of September they took part in the Battle at the village of Chirkov fighting with the rear guard of the retreating Russians. Going Forth in Flying wedge formation on the forest path they forced a unit of charging Cossacks to retreat. After leaving the forest they found themselves to be under fie of the Russian artillery deployed in the village of Spaskuplia. The following day they fought at the village of Voronov (18th of October). On the 18th of October the Regiment weakened by having sustained loses during the previous days attacked squares of Russian Infantry commanded by General Pavel Alexandrovich Stroganov at the village of Vinkov, the battle was unfortunately lost. The remainder of the Regiment fought in the retreating battles at Druja and Borysov (21th of November) on the frozen banks of Berezina. | Saxon Campaings After returning to the country the 13th Hussar Regiment regrouped in the Opatów village. In February of 1813 the Regiment along with the 10th Hussar Regiment became part of the right brigade resting in the town of Kole. During the march of the Army of the Duchy of Warsaw through Czech lands to Saxony in May 1813, the Regiment marched in the last column which was commanded by General Józef Toliński. By the Imperial decree of 27th of July, a new Polish Corps was raised and the remnants of the 10th Hussar Regiment were absorbed into the 13th Hussar Regiment. As part of reorganisation of the Army, Polish cavalry was subordinated to the Franciszek Kellerman commander of the IV Reserve Cavalry Corps, which along with Polish VIII Corps formed one Force. 13th Hussar Regiment having 540 soldiers was commanded by Colonel Józef Sokolnicki and along with the 16th Ulan Regiment they formed 20th Light Cavalry Brigade of General Jan Weyssenhoff as part of the 8th Division commanded by General Antoni Sułkowski. The Regiment entered the fighting on 19th August in 1813, when by the Order of the Emperor Napoleon the VII corps and cavalry of IV Corps were designated with the mission of cutting off the corps commanded by General Peter Wittgenstein from the Austrian Czech Army. During the manoeuvres on the Gabel the Regiment having formed flying wedge formation had penetrated the surrounding areas and along with 16th Ulan Regiment they attacked the Austrian rifles. After cavalry skirmishes horse artillery opened fire and Infantry went on the attack. The enemy was forced to retreat. The Hussars entered the town of Gabel in the evening and having organised system of checkpoints on the outskirts of the town, they patrolled the surrounding area along with Krakus units. During the following days, hussars screened the wing of the VIII Corps and were watching the movements of the enemy forces as part of their reconnaissance mission deep inside Czech lands. They were also designated with task of making mock movements of the entire forces by making demonstrations and by creating multiple fireplaces in the abandoned positions at night. To the end of August the 13th Hussar regiment along with other cavalry regiments, covered the mountains passes from possible surprise attack carried out by Prussians from the South on the town of Zgorzelec. Under the pressure of numerically superior enemy, in September the Polish Corps was retreating in the direction of Lobau. The retreat was covered by the light cavalry, fighting with Cossacks and Bashkirs. Battle of Dresden On 12th of September by the order of the Emperor the 13th Hussar Regiment (along with the entire Brigade) was attached to the 1st French Corps commanded by General Georges Mouton, under which the 13th Hussar Regiment remained under his command to the end of the Campaign. In the first week of October the Regiment being in the Rear Guard of the Corps was retreating in the direction of Dresden. On 9th of October at Pirna, Captain Antoni Kuszel captured 4 artillery cannons and few dozen artillery trains. Making their way in the direction of Dresden, Polish hussars and Ulans from the 16th Ulan regiment have once again engaged the Bashkirs. At Dresden, Polish Hussars were covering the concentrating French forces and repelled constant attacks by the coalition forces. |
