Regiment History
In 1849, following the failed 1848 Rebellion in Ireland, Irish nationalism surged. Several Irishmen formed independent companies of militia, and convinced the government to integrate the independent companies into a single Irish regiment in the New York State Militia. The 69th New York was the Second of Three original Irish regiments, and was established officially on October 12th, 1851, being mustered into the NY state Militia a couple weeks later on November 1st. During the Civil war, the 69th saw action at First Manassas, Yorktown, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Appomattox Courthouse. Fredericksburg was possibly its most famous engagement. On December 13th, during the repetitive assaults on Marye's Heights, the Irish Brigade (including the 69th) ran into the 24th Georgia, a Confederate regiment comprised largely of Irishmen. The Irish brigade stormed past the bodies of their comrades prior fallen and made it further than the other brigades that day. The brigade was originally around 1600 men but lost nearly 600 men during the charge, reducing it's fighting strength down to 1036. The regiment alone accounted for about 512 casualties including 14 out of 15 officers. The regiment continued fighting in a number of major and minor engagements until the end of the war. The regiment continued to serve through both World Wars and still exists today, however its Irish ranks have since dwindled.
