Ulster Volunteer Force

The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) is a loyalist paramilitary group in Northern Ireland. It was formed in late 1965 or early 1966 and named after the Ulster Volunteer Force of 1913. Its first leader was Gusty Spence, a former British soldier. The group's volunteers undertook an armed campaign of almost thirty years during The Troubles. It declared a ceasefire in 1994, although sporadic attacks continued until it officially ended its armed campaign in May 2007.

Noted for secrecy and a policy of limited, selective membership, the UVF's declared goals were to combat Irish republicanism – particularly republican paramilitaries, and to maintain Northern Ireland's status as part of the United Kingdom. The vast majority (more than two-thirds) of its 481 known victims were Catholic civilians. During the conflict, its deadliest attack in Northern Ireland was the 1971 McGurk's Bar bombing, which killed fifteen civilians. Since 1969 the group had also carried out attacks in the Republic of Ireland. The deadliest of these were the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings, which killed 33 civilians, the highest number of deaths in a single day during the conflict. The no-warning car bombings had been carried out by units from the Belfast and Mid-Ulster Brigades. The Mid-Ulster Brigade was also responsible for the 1975 Miami Showband ambush, in which three members of the popular Irish cabaret band The Miami Showband were shot dead at a bogus military checkpoint by gunmen dressed in British Army uniforms. Two UVF men were accidentally blown up in this attack. The UVF's last major attack was the 1994 Loughinisland massacre, in which its members shot dead six Catholic civilians in a rural pub.

The group is a designated terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom and a proscribed organisation in the Republic of Ireland. If you want to join reply with your name and we can fuck up the filthy Fenians together. Happy 12th of July!

Anyone else celebrating the 12th of July, the most glorious day of the year? It's a day of commemoration and of reflection, a celebration of all the Fenians lost to their own futile cause, and a celebration of the brave Loyalist heroes who've lain down their lives in order to keep Northern Ireland British. Today truly is the greatest day of the year. It's like Christmas come early, especially the reactions received from plastic Paddies and other stupid Americans who claim to be Irish.

As a Brit I'm truly filled with nationalist pride today. Fuck the RA, up the UVF and the UDL, up Michael Stone.

Never forget 16th March, when brave Michael took the lives of dierty Sinn Feiners and Taig scum.

A true Irish hero.

The Anglo-Zulu War / What a load of old wank.

When I first played this mod I felt that the game was quite balanced. I felt that yes, though there needed to be more Zulu, at least there was some chance. What the fuck have you done now? This is so heavily one sided for the UK it's not even funny, seriously. One of the only things I actually liked about this mod was the Isidjula, but you've completely fucked up our only advantage. I would wager because you are heavily biased towards the UK side. Even for alpha, this is horrible. What's worse was me just playing on the BAC server, 80 Zulu bots vs 15 UK and the bots got raped so damn hard. Worse still, people were whining that the Zulu had 80 even though we lost every time. Bollocks to this mod, and bollocks to you. This had potential, but probably not any more.

Good job Bluecher, good job.

Historical Discussion / Gobbets and Anecdotes
« on: November 14, 2012, 08:34:16 pm »
The idea of this thread is to share snippets of information, interesting little facts about the Napoleonic wars, little stories and other interesting things about the time. I'll provide an example.

The Russian saying "Pulya - dura, schtik - molodets!" is a phrase that came about by Suvorov, with reference to the Russian black powder. The salt peter was bad in their black powder, and it was ineffective for Russians to fire sometimes. Suvorov then in relation to this, gave an order that "the first kill of a soldier should be by bayonet, the second by the bullet, and the rest henceforth by the bayonet again" (or something along those lines). It was said that Russians almost never removed their bayonets, and even went into battle without firing a bullet before the melee.

I heard another story that a Russian advanced guard came across French skirmishers, and beat them to death with the butts of their muskets. They said "the French aren't good enough to have their blood spilled by the bayonet, give them the butt". They chased away the unit without having fired a shot or using a bayonet.

Now, hopefully this is all right! I think I probably saw this written by Bluehawk, I'm sure he'll jump in here and correct things or add bits (or point out inaccuracies and dub me an inaccurate source).

¡Hola!

1. Füsiliere Batallion

A B O U T   U S

This regiment was formed in early July, 2012, from a group of players within the community. We exist as a group of friends who like to play together and have fun in general, though that is not to say that we are not a serious regiment. We like to seek historical accuracy within the regiment, therefore we will maintain a serious air during events, including PTS (permission to speak) and various other precautions taken in order to ensure that the people of the regiment are as well disciplined as possible. Furthermore, activity is a high priority, and we must ensure that people within the regiment are as active as possible. Inactive players will be removed from the regiment. We have a Steam Group, here. If you wish to join the regiment you can apply below by filling out the application and posting it as a reply or by adding Kpt. Greenbeard on Steam. Use this to contact any member of the regiment and upon acceptance into the regiment you will be invited to join the group. We also have our own teamspeak server. The address is 88th.ts3dns.com and the banner we use will be decided upon shortly. We'll post any announcements we have in the Steam Group, so that everyone can see it.

The aim of the regiment is to set up a group of friends, predominantly. We find that in order to become an effective and cohesive regiment the group must be comfortable with each other, and must be friends. Consequently we intend to have people in teamspeak as much as possible, so that we may play games other than Napoleonic Wars. Furthermore, we will adopt a professional stance in game, by using authentic tactics and techniques, as well as creating an environment of skill and discipline - we will have fun during events, but be disciplined whilst doing so. We will be a regiment that seeks to use period accurate methods, with some slight twists put on based upon experience within events in order to gain full potential from our techniques.  An extensive field manual has been created from scratch available to members so that they may learn tactics and manoeuvres of the time period - this field manual contains all the information that a soldier may need.

If you wish to join, you can register and apply here.

As it has already been mentioned, we are aiming to represent one of the finest regiments that existed, therefore our members must meet our etiquette. If a member is to do well within the regiment they must do their best to follow the Code of Conduct. Following this will lead to promotions if the member is proficient enough to do the task. You must make sure that you adhere to this code at all times! We cannot afford for the regiment to have a bad name, so members are expected to maintain the highest level of discipline that is available. You must read and know the code!

All members must show respect to both external members of the NW community and members of the regiment. It is understandable that one may not actually respect an individual, but it is expected of one to behave in a courteous manner. Also, jokes are absolutely fine about others, but when it directly attacks an individual in an obvious offensive and inappropriate manner, then it is not acceptable and will result in punishment.
Members of the regiment are expected to conduct themselves in a disciplinary fashion and behave well when asked of them. Of course, when the atmosphere is more relaxed then one may behave in a colloquial manner, but during events; it is expected that one will do all they can possibly to allow the event to flow smoothly i.e. not messing about and therefore causing problems and delays.
The regiment expects its members to attend events when possible, we understand that of course people have lives and may become busy sometimes, but it is greatly appreciated when members attend all that they possibly can and with greater numbers, comes greater enjoyment. After a period of inactivity, members may be removed from the regiment's roster for this very reason and in order to prevent this from happening, the submission of a Leave of Absence form (LoA) is advised.
During events, PTS (Permission To Speak) may be put into action and therefore will mean that members must ensure microphone discipline and therefore if they wish to make a useful comment then they should state either in chat or on microphone the phrase 'PTS'; a response will be given by the commander as to whether it is granted or denied and therefore the individual will know whether or not they can speak. Also, PTS is to not to be abused for silly comments, as funny as they may be, they are often not helpful and should be saved for a more relaxed time.

O R G A N I S A T I O N

Concerning organization of the regiment, we intend to use period accurate organisation, bu forming what is effectively 1 company (Kompanie) made of two sections (Zugs). Each Zug will be led by an Unteroffizier for the time being, until the point where the regiment gets large enough for each Zug to be led by a Leutnant. For now, the regiment will be led by a Leutnant due to the small size, but as the size of the regiment increases, and the need for officers rises, more promotions will be given such to the point where the Zugs will in fact be led by the appropriate rank for the time period. The regiment will use double column, where the front rank would at this time have stood tall, for speed and efficiency the front rank will crouch, and the rear rank will step right into the gap, so as to create the absolute minimal possibility for an incident to occur. Each Zug will have two file-closing Korporals, in order to act as markers for manoeuvres and formations. This use of the double column now offers this regiment as one of the few regiments which plays in order to suit historical accuracy and for the professional air - we play for enjoyment and not for fun.

There are 2 Zugs (Platoons) which each have their individual leaders who are both Unteroffiziers (Uffz). On the very far right of the line will stand the Company leader who will be an Offizier (Leutnant, Oberleutnant or Hauptmann), this individual will lead the regiment entirely unless it is decided that the 2 Zugs should function independently in the event that it will provide a tactical advantage. In the middle of both Zugs, will stand the Feldwebel, the glorious flag bearer who in some circumstances lead Zug 2 (This same rule applies to the Company Leader and Zug 1). Behind the line stand the Korporals who will be responsible for ensuring that the rankers are completing orders correctly and behaving. A similar role is expected of the Gefreiters at the end (left) of the line. Finally, the Musicians (Tmr and Flt) will stand immediatly behind Zug 1's Unteroffizier.
