1st Foot Grenadiers Regiment was created from the Grenadiers of the Consular Guard (Gardes des Consuls), the Foot Grenadiers (1er Regiment de Grenadiers-à-Pied de la Garde Impériale) and were one of the oldest and most venerated of regiments in the French Army. They were his ultimate reserve and were the only unit of Napoleon's Imperial Guard not committed to the final charge at Waterloo. Napoleon held them back and were the only unit to hold formation after the failure of the Guard's charge up Waterloo ridge. They formed a square and fought off waves of Prussian and British horsemen buying time for the rest of Napoleon's army to retreat. The fought to the last man and were all killed when Wellington brought up cannons and destroyed the square with cannister shot.
1st Foot Chasseur Regiment was created at the same time as the Grenadiers of the Consular Guard, 1er Regiment de Chasseurs-à-Pied de la Garde Impériale was one of the oldest and most venerated of all skirmishers regiments in the French Army. They were one of Napoleon's Guard regiments to be used consistently in a number of battles. They were responsible for holding the village of Plancenoit against ever growing number of Prussians at the Battle of Waterloo. They beat back the Pussians more than 20 times before re-enforcements arrived to relieve them.
The 1st Artillery of the Guard was made up of the Foot Artillery Regiment (Régiment d'Artillerie à Pied de la Garde Impériale) and was regard as Napoleon's best and most effective Artillery in his entire army. They forumed the core of Napoleon's Grande Batterie at Waterloo and most stood and fought by there cannons refusing to yield them to the allied hands. Only 137 men escaped the battlefield while over 800 lay dead or dying upon the field.
