Competitive EU Events/Tournaments / 18th Groupfighting Tournament
« on: May 25, 2014, 03:53:44 pm »
After a hiatus to allow for the NWEC to get matches scheduled and running we are now pleased to bring forth a classic groupfighting tournament again. Accordingly we will host the 18th Group Fighting Tournament so that people get an opportunity to display their skills and their NW know-how. This tournament will be held at 19.00 BST/20.00 CEST on Wednesday, 28th May, 2014. (28.05.14)

Anyone and everyone is invited just as long as you sign-up on time! The organisers retain the right to remove/deny teams that we deem unreliable to show up or if a single regiment has lain claim to an over the top number of teams. (This will, however, be unlikely). It's also worthwhile to note is that this is a public event and as such you are free to (and I personally hope that you will) make cross-regimental teams.

The format of the tournament is decided based upon the number of teams signed-up, this is done to assure that we have a workable system where no one gets a free pass too far or too late into the tournament. The most common format this far has been single eliminations, but also a system with a pool stage and a knock-out stage have been employed.

1.1 Teams are to contain a minimum of 7 players.

1.2 Teams are allowed to have 5 persons fighting at any given time.

2.1 No shooting.

2.2 Only line infantry models are to be used.

2.3 Only rankers are to be used.

2.4 Only bayonets are to be used

2.5 Formations are not required since it's all melee.

2.6 There are 9 rounds to every match (will stop once someone reaches 5 to save time). The Final and the Bronze Match will be in a first to 7 format instead.

2.7 The Combatants are not to leave the arena until the fight is over.

3.1 Common sense will be used by the organizers so anything not specifically mentioned may be enacted at the organizers discretion.

3.2 The severity and therefore the course of action following rule breaches will be up to the organizers to judge.

3.3 Don't argue with us mid-event, it unfairly slows things down for everyone else, speak to us afterwards if you feel that we have treated you unfairly.

The 18th Groupfighting Tournament is officially open for sign-ups! Get training, get organised and start having fun!

Yours faithfully,

The Organisers

We are happy to launch the latest iteration of the Napoleonic Wars European Cup NWEC tournament for the NW community; NWEC 2014 has arrived. NWEC is a tournament that brings together the nationalities of the NW community in a healthy competition of bayonet Group Fighting. Nations put together their strongest teams and battle it out against fellow European rivals for the prestigious title of European Champion.

The tournament originally started in the spring of 2012, as a pilot designed to test out national group fighting competitions. The pilot was a success and bred a full blown tournament in the autumn of 2012. Now, 2 years later, NWEC is back!

Many nations have participated in past NWECs, notably the 'big 4': UK, France, Germany and Netherlands. Several other nations have been successful as well, including Denmark, Finland, Turkey and Poland, all having made it to knockout stages. NWEC 2012 had a total of 16 national teams, we hope to see equivalent or more in NWEC 2014, so we encourage nations to come out and make teams for this great competition!

Key Dates:

The team draw will be held on the 16th of April, with match scheduling available from 17th of April onwards. During the Group Stage more than one match played a week will be encouraged. Knockouts will be played weekly thenceforth. We aim to have the tournament completed by late-May latest. More information regarding deadlines will come around the beginning of the tournament!

We encourage fellow countrymen to come together, form national teams and sign-up!

This is the European Cup, and accordingly only European nations are eligable to sign-up. The criteria for a 'Nation' is based on citizenship. Nation mergers are permissible but will be subject to the NWEC governing judges' discretion. Generally mergers are only allowed in exceptional cases, largely based of criteria such as common past sovreignty, common language or common identified culture, e.g. Former Yugoslavia or Former Czechoslovakia. Nevertheless, none of these criteria will absolutely guarantee a merger.

For those of you interested in Captaincy or Vice-Captaincy for your nation, please keep in mind that it is an administrative position as well that requires you to make sure that your team makes the deadlines and that people can make it to the match dates and times you agree with your opponents. In the case of multiple individuals signing up for a Nation's Captaincy or multiple teams signing up as a National team, we encourage respective individuals to negotiate amongst eachother a resolution that produces a single team for the tournament. If no agreement is willingly met then the issue will be brought to the NWEC governing judges who will review the case and decide the outcome of the dispute. The NWEC judge review will not guarantee that any individual of either disputant team will be part of the final national team.

It is expected that the choosing of a National team's line-up is genuinely and absolutely intended to produce the strongest possible team for respective nations. The NWEC judges will review appeals against biased team selection should there be issues. We hope that friend, regiment or any other sort of bias does not infringe the process of forming the best possible National teams.

Sign-Up:

Please register using the following form, please include Steam for the Captain and Vice-Captains. Team line-up changes can be made up until the Team draw deadline of the 16th April, simply repost your new team in the thread to have your team updated. The sign up deadline is 16th April.

The minimum size for a final team is 12 players, the max is 16 players. Teams should expect to field at least 8 combatants during matches, the desired number being 10 combatants, so keep this in mind when creating your team line-ups.

Here is a detailed list of all the rules and regulations by which the NWEC will be run. They must all be followed to ensure a smooth experience. Rules and regulations may be subject to change by the NWEC organisers.

1. Nations Rules:

1.1 Each nation is to have one team.

1.2 Each nation is allowed a minimum of 12 people and maximum of 16 people on their team.

1.3 Nations are in charge of picking their own teams.

1.4 The organizers retain the right to intervene in case of malpractices on behalf of a national captain.

1.5 Only persons who hold citizenship in the country are eligable to play for the nation. (Individual exceptions may be granted).

1.6 People who have not played a single match for their nation may be replaced in the roster during the tournament. Once a player has played in a single match for their nation he is permanently on the team roster.
[close]

2. Tournament Rules:

2.1 The tournament has a pool stage and an elimination stage. The winners and second place teams will progress from the groups to the quarter-finals after which all matches are played in a single elimination fashion.

2.2 Every victory in the pool stage will award your nation 3 points. Every draw in the pool stage will award your nation 1 point. (In the case of a draw points-wise individual round-difference will be used as a tie-breaker, and if round-difference would also result in a draw, 9 additional rounds will be played between the drawing nations.)

2.3 Matches are to be scheduled between team captains, and a referee is to be informed at least 24 hours (a day) in advance. (A referee is either one of the organizers, or someone that the organizers approve as a referee). A match may not proceed without a referee present.

2.4 Each team is to have at least 8 players on the server at the time the match is going to begin.

2.5 Each match consists of 20 rounds. If a team reaches a majority of 11 rounds won before all 20 rounds have been played the match will end. In case of a 10-all draw in a knock-out stage match an additional round will be played to decide the winner.

2.6 Only people on the team roster are to be used in the matches. Players must use their listed name on the team roster when in game and must use only Warband ID for all their matches.

2.7 Matches may only be played on NWEC provided servers.
[close]

3. In-Game Rules:

3.1 Matches are fought 10 versus 10. If a team cannot field 10 or more players the match will be fought 9 versus 9. If a team cannot field 9 or more players the match will be fought 8 versus 8. If a team cannot field less than 8 players they have to field as many players as they can against an 8-man opposition. Any evidence of a deliberate concealment of available players for a match, in an effort to reduce the match size from 10 vs 10 to smaller may prompt disciplinary action against the team involved by NWEC organisers.

3.2 No shooting.

3.3 Only normal line infantry rankers are to be used (i.e. no guards or skirmishers).

3.4 Only bayonets are to be used.

3.5 Kicking is allowed.

3.6 No excessive delaying in between rounds.
[close]

4. Player Conduct:

4.1 Pay attention to the admin messages.

4.2 Accept defeat or victory gracefully.

4.3 If you wish to appeal a match result or referee decision please do so on the forum in a respectful manner rather than during a match in progress. Your appeal will be reviewed by NWEC judges.
[close]

5. Organiser Discretion:

5.1 Common sense will be used by organisers and NWEC judges in making judgements.

5.2 Anything not specifically mentioned may be enacted at the organisers discretion (we cannot cover every eventuallity and as such some stuff will have to be made up along the way).

5.3 The severity of an infraction and as such the degree of the punishment will be up to the organisers to decide.

Competitive EU Events/Tournaments / 15th Groupfighting Tournament
« on: December 08, 2013, 04:19:44 pm »

The time has come for yet another groupfighting tournament so that we can get it done before the holiday season and people traveling to meet up with family and loved ones. I hope that we will see alot of familiar and new faces at this installment of the tournament! Also a request on my behalf, please do not go over the top with the length of the names, or include ridiculous amounts of special characters in the names to make my life easier during the actual tournament.

This tournament will be held at 19.00 GMT/20.00 CET on Wednesday the 18th of December 2013.

2.6 There are 5 rounds to every match (will stop once someone reaches 3 to save time). The Final and the Bronze Match will be in a first to 5 format instead.

So it's time for the Groupfighting Tournament to return from it's hiatus and accordingly we are proud to present the 14th Groupfighting Tournament. We hope that we will get a lot of old-timers as well as new talented people to sign up for this edition of the tournament!

This tournament will be held at 19.00 GMT/20.00 CET on Wednesday the 13th of November 2013.

Melee is truly our distinguishing characteristic and we take pride in our melee ability. Many of our members are Groupfighting and NWEC Tournament winners, as well as being veterans from the old MM era. Furthermore, leadership is also an important part of our repertoire. We have a committed Officer staff that values knowledge of field tactics as much as pastoral support of our members through thorough training and not least the administration side of the regiment.

In the 24th we understand that games are played in order to have fun! As such when playing our primary goal is to have fun, accordingly we do not employ rules such as Permission-to-Speak and no talking in the chat while playing. We trust our members to know and understand when it's time to focus and be disciplined, in the security of having the backdrop of liberal, entertaining discussion when battles are in their less intense stages. Our members' ability to be independently responsible and disciplined when needed explains why we have so many highly-regarded community contributors: Official Servers Admins, Tournament Runners (Groupfighting and NWEC), Graphics Designers and Gameplay Testers. We are not a regiment of drones, but rather a collection of creative and independent-minded individuals, and this culture is what makes us thrive!

24th's long term goal is to become established as a respected regiment in the community known for both for maturity and excellence in melee. This means we areopen for recruitment. Any player who shares aforementioned traits of a 24th player is welcome to join us. Battle experience and the friendly and informative Regiment atmosphere will bring any enthusiastic and mature players up to standard in no time. So, we direct all interested to the 'Recruitment' Section below on this thread and await your applications with anticipation!

To see our roster that includes all enlisted rankers and reserves please go to our Website.

Joining the 24th is simple! Just follow these steps:

Firstly, register on our Website! After registering go to our Recruitment Page to fill out the questionnaire. It is likely your application will be accepted or declined within a following 24-hour period.

Secondly, go to our Steam Group and add one of the NCOs, best person to add is the Head of Recruitment! He will likely accept your application and then introduce you to the regiment. Steam is mandatory as it is the primary medium for issuing event notifications.

Thirdly, or instead of going via Steam, come to our Teamspeak Server. Our address is: 5.9.73.175:9977. If you don't have Teamspeak 3 you can download it from here. Teamspeak is mandatory as we use it to communicate and issue orders in battle.

That's it!

Forum & Website / Resignation - Hekko
« on: January 29, 2013, 12:49:52 am »
Well then,

I feel deeply betrayed back-stabbed and wronged by some elements of my administration team and even old friends.

Not only did things not get raised to me in the usual channels, by messaging me in steam, which you all have me on, or even in teamspeak two days before, where I visited you guys. You even took the choice to post a lot of things publicly, most of which was your personal grievances all piled up, I mean, how can you take me in discredit about certain decisions, and in the same post name the melee changes between MM and NW you are always complaining about, to me it seems all you want is to piss in my face......

There is nothing that led me to believe that the usual channels would be any less useless than they usually are.

I am disappointed in trusting certain elements of my administration team, with information.
What information? The root of the problem was lack of information.

To get into your issue with a new administration addition I did last month, I am deeply insulted, but not just me, you insulted her even much more. You lot basically have called her a whore for getting her position which I am furious about and I will not allow that to go on.

I don't think anyone actually called her a whore. I don't think anyone has had any problems with Kitty, people have had problems with your hypocricy and nepotism surrounding it.

I was near completion with our great plan of handling things better when Hekko decided the time was now, to collect everything he could load his shotgun with, truth or not, rumor, lie or personal grievances over gameplay, it was all loaded up and shot into the public.

For that I thank you again great mister calculation, that was the best calculated and well thought of thing you could do in the history of your presence in our wonderful community, not only did you get all the little trolls out of their hiding places, you got a days long argument back on track, even blaming our administration of banning people for their opinion what not... this sickens me..

Be honest, you didn't have half a plan, infact you probably didn't even have the quarter of a plan.
You also say that I loaded and fired a shotgun into the public, but boy did you supply with ammunation through out it all. The fact is, you are no better than the people you call trolls. You acted in a conduct unbefitting of a CEO and then you act all surprised that there was reprecussions.

Hekko I remember you mentioning the closing of your infamous “firing in the charge topic” I feel especially insulted by mentioning this, because you asked me the same question in teamspeak 3 days ago, where I told you exactly “The topic has been raised 5 times already, and each time it ended in one big pile of problems, countless arguments and nobody ever agreed, bringing it up again is just causing drama, why don’t you just host an event yourself with your own rules?” in which you replied “hmm, ok”... Guess nothing was OK right?

You were drunk at the time, trolling a the artillery crew in a private linebattle. I wasn't going to make an eloquent argument with you at that point.

Now for my letter of resignation:

I have played MM/NW for two years now, and during my entire time I have done my best to improve the community. I have created servers, I have created a new competitive way to play, I have helped improve the game mechanics, I have posted about tiny details regading historical accuracy, I have adminstered the servers to the best of my ability. I have spoken up regarding procedures that I have found unfair, I have ran a regiment where alot of people passed through and enjoyed their stay, and even those who left ultimately remained my friends.

However, it comes to an end today. I personally have not actually been affected, I have been privileged in the community, the closest to affected I have been is when CarolusRex was vetoed for admin. Yet still I feel that the community deserves something better than what it's getting from Vincenzo. Lets be clear about one thing Vincenzo is a troll through and through, I have heard some rather dubious stuff about him regarding his native days for instance. This is not really a problem when he is running a mod, because well a mod is a very inofficial setting, however, when he is the "CEO" of a company he has to behave in a manner befitting of a person with so much responsibility. His crimes are not victimless either, atleast Craig and Charles fell victim to his whimsical desicions, one being community banned for simply questioning the poor treatment of Charles who lost his regimental name in an unprecedented move, in order to stop flaming&protect the 51st. The 51st not needing protecting and the flaming becoming worse. Hancock has also provided some other examples.

The fact is you have created a community with so much resentment because of the way you behave, you blame me for the outcome, but you should really blame yourself. If you would have acted as a CEO you would not deal with the fallout of a chain of bad choices you made.

I am no longer a desired part of the administrative staff, I guess I never really was, as such I suppose I will have to resign since you probably won't remove me because you don't want to run the risk making a martyr of me. I had alot of fun in MM despite the way the top of the administrative staff behaved, and for that I thank you.

I want to touch on your main mistake though, because it will come back and haunt you, the reason why you are not acting like a CEO is because you do not understand that it's the consumers, the customers, the community that pays your paycheck, if you piss them off, like you continually have done (people who are pissed off are alot more likely to complain to their friends) you will run out funding for your current project, and when that happens you will realise that people like me and Hancock were right. There is more game start-ups out there than one can imagine, you need the consumer more than the consumer needs you. The community admired and feared you, instead you should have admired and feared them. Don't get this the wrong way I don't want the project to fail, but I just feel that is the probable outcome.

Regretful regards,
Hekko

Vince's post I am quoting at points:

Forum & Website / The community deserves better
« on: January 27, 2013, 07:06:27 pm »
I am finally fed up with the idiotic way this community is ran by. The way justice and bans are handled, the way threads and criticism is met, how people are promoted within the community and the hypocrisy of the top level leadership.

Lets first discuss the current events. The choice to retire the 51st name, it was a ridiculous proposal and was both unpragmatic and unfair. Lets focus on the unfair bit though since pragmatism ultimately is of less consequence when discussing the fundamentals of the community. The 51st are getting a special privilege for the sake of their contribution to the game. Lets get one thing straight, the reason the 51st has contributed to the dlc is because of the closed-shop nepotistic ways of the developers got help for it. I am sure that the mapping done by 51st members could just as well have been done by people from the 84e or the 1er etc, as long as they would have been granted the Chance to do so. What few people know is that the 51st during the beta actively impeded allot of testing by being hellbent on playing commanderbattle whenever more than 4 people were on. I came to the beta fairly late, yet still the game had a gamebreaking flaw of a fixed height up-stab, which meant that you could duck under the up-stab by holding in a downstab. However, since I didn't belong to the cool kids I was ignored at first when pointing out that this was a serious problem. Infact I was probably the most active poster about gameplay in the beta, and alto of the stuff I posted about has gotten implemented since, just that it took several months after the release for it to be done. Once again because I didn't belong to the cool kids. All the while the 51st happily played commander battle and said that everything was fine. So I don't know if this is a legacy to protect. Post-release their saga is quite known to everyone. They hardly ever played and only popped onto the forum to state how much more awesome than everyone else they are. They then did the ultimate kick in the bollocks by leaving the community a couple of months after launch, essentially a statement that the game sucks. Now the top-level administrative staff is kicking everyone else, true fans who actually have stuck with the sub-par game, by protecting the rights of people who don't care about their rights, nor the game inventing new rules as they go. Regiments such as the 1er, 84e, 15e, 13e, 91st, 92nd, 59th, 63e, 8Lr and other regiments, have all contributed more to the betterment of the community than the 51st, infact the aforementioned regiments have designed and ran tournaments, they have hosted events for years, they have taken newcomers under their wing, and generally been a force of good in the community, and by singling the 51st out you are waving a huge middle finger in the face of the rest of the community.

Then we have the case about appointing admins. Apparently it's okay for Vince to appoint Kitty to a very senior adminposition by virtue of being his girlfriend, while when CarolusRex applies through normal channels, gets a bunch of +1 ones from current admins, he is denied based on the fact that he was a member of the 15e. Irregardless of the fact that he is competent and the fact that the 15e does no longer exist. So nepotism and cronyism is fine, where as using the reverse version to block a competent admin is apparently fine as well.Inconsistency at it's finest!

While on the subject of admin appointments, usually in an organisation one is promoted based on merit, FSE must have been asleep during that bit of the management seminar. Because FSE seems to promote admins rather on lack of merit than actual merit. Some of the senior administrative positions are/were held by people that were in no way competent to hold them. Lets first discuss Cenzii. The man abused his admin while being a normal admin to turn of lancers, change maps etc. Just because he was fed up with them. Something that under normal circumstances gets you removed from the administrative team, instead with the FSE group it gets you joint-head admin. His forum posting was also of an appalling character, the man who is supposed to calm down the community when the NW launch didn't go entirely to the satisfaction of the community, instead he makes an inflammatory post in all caps, pissing even more people off. I even confronted Praetorian the then head admin about it, as well as with some questions regarding the professionalism of the administrative staff now that it went from a mod to a paid DLC, as you can see from the screenshots Praetorian ultimately tries to say that Cenzii isn't affiliated with the FSE, so at least there have been some senior FSE representatives with some sense.

Cenzii also issued wonderful precedents regarding regiments such as the precedent that one does not need the permission of someone to make a regiment with the same name as long as it's done in a different timezone, this precedent has been countermanded since then, but it still shows how singularly unfit he was for that position.

Then we have Donald. While Donald is quite fit for normal run of the mill admining he is completely unfit if he ever is in a position where he has a stake in the matter. The incident where some was parodying 92nd names for instance springs to mind, or incidents where people have been temporarily banned because they have asked whether or not he was pissy when he issued a ban. Sure admins should be respected, but it swings both ways, since the admin has more powers and tools they should also explain their reasoning when doing stuff if challenged, even if it's done in a less than polite way.

I have not that much experience with the US administrative policy, some of the recent choices make me wonder though how the American side chooses admins, and from what I have heard from other admins that play on US1 at times as well, is that some of the new US1 admins are tripping balls with their new adminpowers, waiting for opportunities to flex their strength for the least offence.

I don't think I need to even mention Olafon, however, at least he was honourable enough to admit to being wrong and stepping down as a result of his misbehaviour. (Although it has happened before as well).

Finally we have Vince&Deo who through their behaviour as admins moved from being the impartial mediators solving the issue about who has the right to the 51st name to a position where they antagonize unrelated parts of the community and become the perpetrators in the conflict. Vince also has a nasty habit of arbitrarily shutting down discussion simply for the sake of shutting it down. A bit in congruent that discussion on a forum for discussion gets locked. The biggest kicker here is that he locks threads as soon as he has replied, which is of course something an admin should do, but when the thread is concerning his administration of the forum he probably should leave it up after he has replied otherwise it looks, and in this case is, because he know his argument does not stand up to scrutiny. So essentially he makes an unfair ruling, when people try to question the ruling, he forces them into breaking the rules and then has them community banned. Well trolled Vince. You say that there is so much shit regarding regimental names etc, and that's why you try to stop it to the best of your ability, do you know why there has suddenly is a shit storm? Because you stirred it up!

As seen in my discussion I was hoping that with the move from MM to NW we'd have allot more of professionalism on the administrative side of things, turns out I was sorely mistaken. The community is dying, partly because of the design of the game (I am quite convinced that FSE has no idea of what ultimately made MM so loved, because as always the focus for the development seems to have been on pipe-tunes and other such stuff rather than gameplay, but that is a different matter). But also partly because of the way the community is being run. You are upsetting people that have donated money to the development of your next game and have been pro-FSE for a long time, so you are even hurting yourself by your incompetence. I made a post in the donators board about you needing an investor to get the funding. I had another reason for it, that I might as well divulge now, and that is the fact that it makes you answerable to someone, someone who only cares about profits, and satisfied customers, fans and community makers is a part of maximizing profits.

I have been running the two biggest recurring competitive events for NW, I was a beta tester, I helped to improve the melee (almost all changes to melee  have been present in my state-of-melee threads and beta feedbacks, albeit slowly and reluctantly), I have hosted a number of smaller events, I have been administrating the official servers and I have been running a regiment for most of the existence of NW. So you can say that I was a fan, I did my bit for the community, but you have now lost my support and respect, and I know that allot of other people feel the same way.

I'll give credit where credit is due, FSE are amazing coders, amazing modelers and Rejenorst is brilliant at getting the sounds together, however, you are completely and utterly unfit to run and administrate a community and all the evidence points to the point that you are unfit at running a company and designing the gameplay of  a game.

I am fairly sure that I will be removed from the administrative team, I am fairly sure I will be banned from the forum, I am fairly sure that I will be banned from the official servers, I am fairly sure I will be banned from the official linebattles (not that there are any) and I am fairly sure that I will be banned from the official TS. Still,  I do this because someone needs to stand up and let you know that you are driving off a cliff and you need to sort your shit out, or the market economy will sort you out, and you are stuck writing code for a soulless automated trading program. So for the sake of the community and yourselves, change something.

Salutations, we have yet again arrived at the point when a new tournament is due in roughly two weeks. We may be in a new forum now, but that does not mean that the tournament will be any less aweomse!

This tournament will be held at 19.00 GMT/20.00 CET on Wednesday the 16th of January 2013. The Holiday season has passed, and peoples hangovers from the New Years celebrations should be fading as away as well, accordingly what better way to get into gear for the new year than by playing in a groupfighting tournament! This is also a special tournament in the sense that it's roughly one year after the very first public groupfighting tournament was played, and as such I hope we will see alot of old-timers making a comeback!

Anyone and everyone is invited just as long as you sign-up on time! The organisers retain the right to remove/deny teams that we deem unreliable to show up or if a single regiment has lain claim to an over the top number of teams. (This will however be unlikely).

1.1 Teams are to contain a minimum of 7 players and a maximum of 8 players.

1.2 Teams are allowed to have 5 persons fighting at any given time. 2 members are expected to sit out if all 7 persons turn up, but it should not be the same persons every round. This will hopefully stop people from being understregth in the fights. (In the event of a team only being able to 4 people for a given round the opposing team is supposed to only field 4 as well, any number under 4 is tough luck for the team with no-shows, incase the opposing team does not want to go under 4 members to further balance it.)

2.1 No shooting.

2.2 Only line infantry models are to be used.

2.3 Only rankers are to be used.

2.4 Only bayonets are to be used

2.5 Formations are not required since it's all melee.

2.6 There are 5 rounds to every match (will stop once someone reaches 3 to save time). The Final and the Bronze Match will be in a first to 5 format instead.

2.7 The Combatants are not to leave the arena until the fight is over.

3.1 Common sense will be used by the organizers so anything not specificly mentioned may be enacted at the organizers discretion.

3.2 The severity and therefore the course of action following rule breaches will be up to the organizers to judge.

3.3 Don't argue with us mid-event, it unfairly slows things down for everyone else, speak to us afterwards if you feel that we have treated you unfairly.

4.1 Teams are to register using the following template:

Include a Steam ID for the Team Captain!

In my opinion the bestest paradox grand strategy game made. It has enough scope to evolve interestingly, it has alot of depth for those who are interested in micro managing things, while also being relatively easy to play. The economy is alot more interesting and accurate than the CK2 and especially the EU3 one.

Duelling

The basis of all combat is one versus one fighting and as such one will have to be moderately accomplished at fighting in a duel to be able to succeed anywhere else. As a caveat I will add here that the guide reflects my experiences, opinions and thought process and might not be outright applicable to everyone.

Rule number 1 of dueling: keep more of an eye on the enemy than yourself so that you know what he is doing and thinking, because if you get to caught up in your own doing and thinking he will simply do something that you never expected and your most masterful feint will be all in vain.

Rule number 2 of dueling: If it works it's good, don't mind what everyone else says. A few of my favourite tricks that I used when dueling a year ago in MM were stuff I picked up from some of the worst people I dueled. Infact they were so bad that they had no idea of what they were doing, but they managed to kill me precisely because they acted so irrationally, the key is to understand what it is they are doing, fit it into a formalised understanding of the game mechanics, and know in what situations to employ it. So if someone is calling you a spammer, or whatever, don't mind them, just try to understand in what situations your spamming works and in what situations it doesn't work and make sure to only spam when it works.

When starting a duel you should always block their first stab when moving into the fight, it's safer and that way there are no accidents (of course everyone cannot block first, and as such what this trying to convey is that you should not go in with the intent to end it quickly by doing something that I would like to call jousting). Furthermore you should never assume that they will stab a certain way, instead go in without a block, but with the intent to block, the lack of block is also likely to incite a clean and easy stab to block which is the safest way to innitiate a 1v1. Once the 1v1 fight has been initiated the question you should ask yourself is whether or not the oponent is any good, because that determines the approach you will take to the rest of the fight, while trying to work this out usually it's prudent to exchange a few normal semi-held stabs into the enemy's block  to see how the reacts to that. Using the enemy's reactions to categorise what kind of techniques he uses to kill his enemies. I will list the techniques and their counters after having explained a very important concept:

Attack priority. A concept that I probably should have explained alot earlier on in the guide is attack priority. Attack priority can be described as whoever can attack the opponent quicker from the particular scenario i.e. if both players were to initiate and/or release their attacks at that very second and guide them into the oponent as quickly as possible the one who would land the attack first has attack-priority. Since the other attack will be canceled (except some random incidents with cavalry) the one with attack-priority can attack with impunity should he wish since his offensive strength also serves as his defence. The concept sounds fairly simple but in practice an imense number of variables will have an input into who truly has attack priority and being able to estimate attack priority is something one can only learn with time. Generally speaking, you will hold attack priority if you start an attack directly after having blocked, you do not necessarily have to let go of the stab though since you will still have attack priority from the situation of holding your stab to his not having started moving his attack back.

Patience&Simplicity: chanses are that alot of players are not that strong blockers, and as such by playing it safe and keeping things simple you simply outlast them when they stumble on their own attempts at doing something fancy when it comes to killing you. What this translates to in practice is just blocking the enemies stabs, keeping the enemy infront of you and doing quick stabs after you have blocked. This should be your primary mode of fighting at all times, with fancier stuff added in from time to time.

Held stabs&wiggling&dolphining: essentially all techniques designed to delay the time it takes from when the animation to prepare your stab starts and the impact of the actual stab. The reason for this is twofold, first and foremost it stops people from chambering you, but it also has the additional use of 'breaking the timing', alot of new (and old) players habe a built in timer in their muscle memory that says block now-attack now  regardless of what's happening on the screen, making them release their block prematurely becaue according to that timer it's attacking time for them already. The danger here is that you lose attention on what the enemy is doing and overhold your stab and the enemy gets away with doing an attack even when they do not have attack priority. Remeber rule number 1 of dueling!

Feinting: Feinting does the same thing as the held stab, it says: your turn to attack, when it infact is not. However, it adds a few more triggers to the sensation people feel when it comes to releasing their block it adds sound as well as a visual trigger to it which means that more people will be caught out. On the other hand it also has the benefit that you can repeatedly change your attack direction to confuse your enemy about the direction you will attack from to the point where they will be wrong blocking by the time your stab is hitting them. To feint simply start an attack, and tap right mousebutton to cancel the attack a bit into the stab and innitiate a new one. Feinting does leave you a tad more vulnerable than held stabs, because of the nature of a feint there is a slight moment when you the enemy can initiate an attack and get attack priority over you, this is VERY dependant on positioning and as a rule of thumb people who know how to do that are far and few between. Another word of warning when it comes to feinting is to not feint too much or people will initiate their stab, and hit you anyway because you are just repeatedly canceling your stab. Always remember rule number 1 of dueling!

Chambering: Chambering is when you initiate a stab just when the enemy stab is coming towards, this cancels out the enemy stab with a blocklike noise, giving you attack priority since your stab is almost halfway towards them already. The downstab chamber is unblockable in many situations, but this is highly dependant positioning. Chambering is incredibly risky, because not only does it require you to time it right but also if you telegraph that you will be chambering the enemy (if competent) will just hold his stab resulting in you being rather dead. As a rule of thumb, do not try to chamber upstabs as often because they are less unblockable, and the hitbox is a bit off so that it's quite hard to actually aim your screen for the chamber. Downstabs on the otherhand are quite worthwhile to chamber due to the degree they are unblockable as well as the fact that they are easier to chamber.

Strafing: Another way that works quite well in NW, although a bit risky is the rightstrafe-turn and spam. Due to the lackluster collision mesh of the up and downstab and the slow turningspeed on can, by moving right, avoid quite alot of stabs aimed at you simply because it is impossible to turn that far quick enough. The danger of this of course is evident in the fact that if you are not moving correctly and far enough you will get stabbed while not attempting to block, another obvious counter to this is people who swipe left to right instead of right to left in which case you walk into their attack rather than away from it.

Kicking: Kicking someone successfully will stun them for a second making them unable to block resulting in you getting in a free stab on them, the shortcoming of kicking is the very short range of it, your inability to move or turn when kicking and your inability to block down. So all in all kicking is a high risk-high reward move. To avoid being kicked simply do not facehug. You should not be facehugging anyway, but kicking makes it extra dangerous.

The reason why a fairly simple playingstyle should be your basis is because you will become harder to read. If you constantly are feinting someone will just take a calculated risk and stab when you are doing a feint not caring to try to follow the feints with their block, or if you always are chambering it is fairly easy to do held stabs against you and kill you. By having a fairly simple non-accident prone base playstyle that you occasionally spicce up by adding in these elements you will be much harder to read with the added benefit that it will catch people off guard giving the techniques a higher successratio when it come to hitting the enemy.

Now having mentioned the techniques and their weaknesses it's just a case of getting a feel for what the enemy is doing out of this and applying appropriate counter measures depeding on what the enemy is doing.

Footwork is also crucial in duels, it is the thing determining the outcome of many of these techniques as well as how damage calculations work out. As a rule of thumb you want to be moving forward when you are attacking and backwards when you are defending. The reason for this is two-fold, first of all you want to maximize the speedbonus when you are attacking to do as much damage as possible should you succeed with the stab and vice-versa when defending. The second reason has to do with timing, due to the nature of stabs the closer you are to the target the faster you will connect your attack, and accordingly the time your opponent has to block will be shortened accordingly. Other things to keep in mind with footwork, usually by strafing right moving in a circle around your opponent will give you more time to react to stabs and will give you a chanse of getting poked because it's so late into the attack that you get hit. Something that you never should do in a 1v1 is to follow your opponent around when he is backpedaling. Due to the nature of stabs backpedaling will always give you an advantage, because the backpedaler is in charge of when to turn giving them attack priority when they turn. The reason why you shouldn't be backpedaling is twofold though, first and foremost there's nothing that forces your enemy to follow you, and if your success is pending on the enemy following you you are in a bit of a pickle when the enemy just stands still. As an effect of this if a groupfight is infact a series of 1v1s you by backpedaling away risk the enemy peeling off from you and going and double-teaming one of your friends, which is unfortunate for your friend as well as you, since you're next in line to be double teamed.

Damage maximization, so you have managed to successfully land a hit but the enemy didn't die, the enemy then hits you and you die outright. It's gotten worse since MM and in a sense damage is very random in NW, which is unfortunate for competitive play, however, there are a few things you can do to maximize damage. Tying in with the above paragraph about footwork the thing you want to do is make sure that you are moving forward to get the speedbonus, you should also take care to hit in the sweetspot (i.e. the time in the attack when you do the maximum amount of damage), which generally is towards the middle of the attack. You should also hold your attack for a while in order for it to get a damage bonus, beware though, the bonus shrinks if you overhold it! Aiming for the head since successfully hitting the head carries a damage bonus. All in all if you can get the speedbonus and sweetspot right chanses are that you will be onehitting people, but getting so when the enemy is actively trying to fight you is easier said than done, and you should except having to stab someone atleast twice.

Do's and don'ts:

Do hold your stab.

Don't chamber again after a succesful chamber, people will expect it.

Do hold your stab after having successfully chambered, alot of people will think: I'll shot that turd how to really chamber".

Don't stab again after having been stabbed.

Do stab again after having successfully stabbed someone.

Do kick someone if they are facehugging you.

Don't kick if you are walking forward.

Do block until you hear the sound.

Do hold your rechambers.

Do the dolphin.

Post scriptum, alot of the stuff here is fairly basic, drawing on my experience in duelling a year ago or so, and as such some of it's value may have diminished since then.

Post post scriptum:

When to break attack priority. Attack priority makes a duel fairly predictable because it gives both parties a certain timer that they can follow telling them whether or not they are defensive or offensive. However, as with art the masters can break the rules and get away with it. Breaking attack priority is something that can be used to great effect against people as long as you know that it is a bit of a gamble at most times. I personally use mainly two ways of breaking obvious attack priorities. I shall name them positional attack priority and complacency-based attack priority. The former abuses the fact that the turningspeed with a held attack is so low, so if someone does a bit of a spin with a stab held I generally throw in an uncermonious quick stab at their back and hope for the best. A different way of positional attack priority breaking is simply by backing off a tad, so that you are out of range of his stab, this means that he cannot stab you at a point in time, you then use this time to initiate a stab, and then come back into range with the stab already going out, this means that you have now stolen attack priority from your target, this is, however, rather obvious and few if any decent players will fall for it. The other way of breaking attack priority is achieved when the enemy holds his stab for a long period of time, with you holding the corresponding block, after a while people tend to get sloppy and will react slowly to a quick stab from you. This is a risky move though, and it is best combined with a bit of manouvering to make the slow turnspeed work in your favour a bit.

Groupfighting while outnumbering. Since I wasn't too shabby at groupfighting while outnumbering (who isn't though ;) ) I thought I could add a small section with a few hints on it. When I am in a groupfighting situation where I outnumber the enemy I generally tend to use the following techniques to finish them off as quickly and safely as possible. The quite simplest way is to walk up to an enemy that is occupied to the front and stab them in the back. Since most people move around while fighting this is of course easier said than done. The most important thing to keep in mind is that good groupfighters feed of the hubris of those who outnumber them, people get careless and greedy when they outnumber the enemy 3 to 1, and as such they fail to protect themselves and are more open to getting killed. In order to work around this you ought to adopt a mindset where you assume that you are fighting someone like Ward, Chibbi, Sid or Evan at any given time, and always be prepared to block when coming in, even when it seems as if you are undetected. Furthermore, you might want to assume that they will lunge for you when you are coming in and pre-empt their lunge by lunging even earlier, the point being that you will have attack priority in the case that he does lunge for you, and if he doesn't there is no harm done as long as you know how to come into a fight and how to direct your stabs around your allies (and assuming your allies have rational footwork).

When in a fight against a single opponent it depends a bit on whether or not you are on teamspeak and you are used to fighting with the ally. If your ally is your friend you should by all means go for the up-stab down-stab combination which will make murder with anyone and everyone if executed correctly (which is the tricky bit of course). The rationale being that you cannot block two directions at once so one of the stabs will land. The best tip I can give you of achieving a situation like this is simply by blocking one attack from the lone guy, whoever blocked then prepares a down-attack, forcing the lone guy into blocking down and the other ally will go for an up-attack and after that both up-stab and down-stab are released simultaneously resulting in the demise of the lone guy. To pull it off like this footwork is key and generally you will want to make sure that one player isn't blocking the other, so if your ally is moving right you should move left and vice versa.

Footwork in a 2v1 is the most crucial part regardless of whether or not you know your ally, because improper footwork will result in teamkills, unessecary deaths and wasted time. Brilliant footwork will even mean that timing and attack diretion won't matter because you cannot block to your back.

When not knowing your allies I generally try to use them as meatshields, and attacking around them. The idea is that if your enemy holds his stab and is facing your opponent and your in an angle where your opponent would have to hit through your ally to hit you you are free to attack (if your ally blocks fine, if your ally doesn't block he still keeps you safe and enables you to kill the opponent). This is doubly effective because your ally is keeping you safe, while your ally is also serving as a distraction for the enemy since if the enemy attacks your ally, he is open for your attack. As a rule of thumb it is easier to attack around an ally who is slightly to the left of you because of how the bayonet originates outwards from the right part of your body. Beware, good people will spam a few attacks if they land a hit and generally if you are not very quick with attacking from cover or trying to backstab someone after they got a kill you might find yourself dead instead.

Groupfigting when outnumbered isn't my forté and as such I cannot comment too much on it, I will just quickly put in a couple of hints that I know work, but as always the devil is in the execution. The first one is exploatation of the hubris of a group, people who outnumber you are likely to think your easy pickings and feel safer, making for easier kills. You can abuse this by looking as if you intend to attack one target but then quickly change target to someone who is greedy and open, for instance by doing a quick spin, or attacking around the guy infront of you (who is blocking) into a guy behind him who is not blocking nor expecting to block (this is easier to do against a guy to the right of the guy infront of you due to bayonets originating from the right side of your body.) The second trick while outnumbered is to simply keep one of your enemies inbetween you and the other enemy, that way you are only fighting one guy at once rather than two, making surviving significantly easier.

Competitive EU Events/Tournaments / 12th Groupfighting Tournament
« on: November 13, 2012, 12:48:48 pm »

Salutations, we have yet again arrived at the point when a new tournament is due in roughly two weeks. We may be in a new forum now, but that does not mean that the tournament will be any less aweomse!

This tournament will be held at 19.00 GMT/20.00 CET on Wednesday the 28th of November 2012. I hope to see a lot of you regulars return for some autumn action and perhaps also to see some new and curious teams emerge. To make this another large and vibrant tournament please keep up the enthusiastic word-of-mouth advertising, as our formal adverts and invitations can only go so far in spurring on players to form teams!

Anyone and everyone is invited just as long as you sign-up on time! The organisers retain the right to remove/deny teams that we deem unreliable to show up or if a single regiment has lain claim to an over the top number of teams. (This will however be unlikely).

P.s. The header is a placeholder until we can get an up to date one!

Greetings NW community,

Welcome to the thread for the Napoleonic Wars European Cup (NWEC) thread. The NWEC is intended as a way to bring together countrymen in a bit of national pride, very similar to the UEFA cup, albeit you can compete in this cup from your desk at home! The autumn season for the NWEC tournament is drawing near, and it's time to start sharpening those bayonets again in order to throw out the age-old enemies. Hopefully everyone who participated in the previous installment will try out for their nations again, and for new people to try out for the first time. Furthermore we hope to see alot of the major nations that were missing, such as Russia and France to sign up this time around to make it the most epic tournament yet!

No nations are signed up, yet and what nations will be signed up will be pending on the interest of people from the particular nation. So if you want to play round up some support from your fellow countrymen and sign-up.

This is the European Cup, and accordingly only European nations are eligable to sign-up. If there are any unclarities regarding this other tournament such as the UEFA cup, Eurovision song contest etc. will be used to determine how the precedent lies.

There is a possiblity to merge nations, but this is only available in exceptional cases and will be at the discretions of the organizers. Potential mergers could for instance be the Baltic Nations, Former Yugoslavia, the Vatican & Italy etc. However, everyone in Europe will be have a chanse to participate, in the sense that there will be one team multicultural that people whose nations do not have a team will be eligable to join. N.b. people whose nation has a team participating are ineligable to try-out to team multicultural.

For those of you who might be interested in a Captain-position or a Vice-captaincy for your nation, please keep in mind that it is an administrative position as well, that requires you to make sure that your team makes the deadlines (that sometimes might be quite harsh) and that people can make it to the match dates and times you set.

Please register using the following form, please include steam for the Captain&Vice-Captains:

Code
[b]Country:[/b]
[b]Captain:[/b]
[b]Vice-Captain 1:[/b]
[b]Vice-Captain 2:[/b]
[b]Roster:[/b]

The deadline for sign-ups is 29.9

Like all tournaments and games some ground rules are required these following ones are used for the current tournament:

1. Rules About Nations
1.1 Each nation is to have one team.

1.2 Each nation is allowed a maximum of 16 people on their team.

1.3 Nations are in charge of picking their own teams.

1.4 The organizers retain the right to intervene in case of malpractices on behalf of a national captain.

1.5 Only persons who hold citizenship (originate from) the country are eligable to play for the nation. (Individual exceptions may be granted).

1.6 People who have not played a single match for their nation may be replaced in the roster.
[close]

2. Tournament Rules
2.1 The tournament has a pool stage and an elimination stage. The winners and second place teams will progress from the groups to the quarter finals after which it will be played in a single elimination fashion.

2.2 Every victory in the pool stage will award your nation 3 points. Every draw in the pool stage will award your nation 1 point. (In the case of a draw points-wise individual rounds won will be used as a tie-breaker, and if rounds won also would result in a draw rounds lost will be used as a tie-breaker, if this also fails to give a winner 9 additional rounds will be played between the drawing nations.)

2.3 Matches are to be scheduled between team captains, and a referee is to be informed at least 24 hours (a day) in advance. (A referee is either one of the organizers, or someone that the organizers approve as a referee)

2.4 Each team is to have 8 players on the server at the time the match is going to begin

2.5 Each match has 20 rounds to be played, team with most rounds won will win the match. In case of a draw in the knock-out stage an additional round will be added. (Matches will stop after one team reaches 11 rounds won, so only in the case of both teams scoring 10 and 10 will all rounds be played)

2.6 Only people on the team roster are to be used in the matches.
[close]

3. In-Game Rules
3.1 Matches are fought 8 versus 8

3.2 No shooting.

3.3 Only normal line infantry rankers are to be used (i.e. no guards or skirmishers).

3.4 Only bayonets are to be used.

3.5 No delaying.
[close]

4. Behaviour
4.1 BEHAVE!

4.2 Pay attention to the admin messages.

4.3 Accept defeat/victory gracefully.

4.4 Be respectful.
[close]

5. Organiser Discretion
5.1 Common sense is to be used.

5.2 Anything not specifically mentioned may be enacted at the organisers discretion (we cannot cover every eventuallity and as such some stuff will have to be made up along the way).

5.3 The severity of an infraction and as such the degree of the punishment will be up to the referee/organizers to decide.

Redthorn Studios have kindly offered to sponsor the tournament with some prizes for the team that places first. If you want to know more about Redthorn Studios and their project please check out their steam page: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/redthorn-studios .

The prize for the team finishing in the first place is donated by Redthorn Studios, and will be the following:
  - Exclusive Preview access to the Development of their new Project
  - Guaranteed access to their first large-scale testing session
  - The opportunity to ask at least one of the Dev team for details about the Project

(Note from Hekko, an NDA is almost certainly a condition when accpeting the first place prizes)

There will be a few awards to those individuals who in some way or form distinguish themselves while playing in the NWEC. This may be subject to a bit of change, especially the names, and more ones might be added. You also need to have competed in atleast two matches to be eligable to get an award of this nature.

Golden Bayonet - Will be awarded to the player with the most kills.

Golden Musket - Will be awarded to the player with highest K/D.

Pincuchion - Will be awarded to the player with the most deaths.

We will be employing either a specialised Groupfighting tournament map, or a map from the groupfighting server that we have in mind in case nothing can be tailormade to our specifications. More info will follow.

A big thanks to Evanovic for indefatigably providing me with pictures and graphics to use, and making the petty changes I always ask him to make!
