100 page limit
« on: January 28, 2015, 01:42:18 pm »
I was just wondering, why not just delete all the old thread from regiments that have not been around since 2013, since by doing so you would be increasing server space, which means that there would no need to limit threads to 100 pages, which would reduce the server space needed from all the new threads.

The regiment section has 2400 threads. How many do you think are not used?

True, however it is not all about that. I don't know the ins and outs but this thread will probably get locked pretty soon just to let you know. As you are meant to message moderators instead of making a thread.   :-\

No it wouldn't.

It's already been explained by the developers that deleting all of the old threads won't do jack shit since no one looks at them anymore. Therefore, the server that hosts the forums doesn't have to load those threads, which in turn causes no strain on the server.

Deleting them serves no purpose.

We should do it regardless. The 70 pages of disbanded regiment threads is fucking disgusting.

The way it was told to us is that every time a user loads a thread, the server has to dig up everything that's on that thread, including any videos, pictures, gif, and of course, text, which actually does add up to a lot when spanning several hundred pages of it.

Deleting a thread would clear up some space on the server, but not much, since a thread with no one looking at it requires a miniscule fraction of what it would otherwise.

That said, we probably wouldn't have a cap limit if it wasn't for the 60th, even if threads that were from years ago were still being used now, with hundreds and hundred of pages each. The 60th thread just required too much server usage because of the amount of posts every single day and even more so the amount of people watching and rewatching the thread every single day.

I think the threads that have no one specifically asking for them to not be deleted should be, that said, not before like a month or so, so that people can save what they want from them.

Or if not, increase the page cap a bit, since a lot of regiments fill up 100 pages very quickly.

Pretty much what Audiate said. It's about opening the threads which are large and - particularly in the regimental section - full of images/videos. It was simply a way of providing stability to the server box so that the BCoF dev/test server isn't overtly impacted. The threads remain so they can be accessed, referenced etc, but don't have regular traffic of dozens of people opening up a large thread.

Due to the complaints that would inevitably arise if old threads were deleted, coupled with the insignificant benefit server-wise, there's no need to delete old threads.
This forum system has some limitations on the administrative side (being free, rather than hundreds of euros), and so it's not always easy to do everything you'd like, which may be available in (relatively) expensive forum systems. Due to this it would likely require mods trawling through hundreds of threads deleting them individually, which simply isn't something we have the time/sanity for.

So what about increasing the page limit to 200 or 300 pages ?
