It really seems like all those ships are either 1st or 2nd rates.
I am quite certain that if ship selection will become fee to choose, there will be no frigates in the game. just a 122 gun shitfest.
Probably one of the very few old-timers here who hasn't been a regimental leader.

I've never come across any game that hid build projects like that beneath seriously large resource grinds.

Well yeah, if I am honest, I don't like ships that are larger than frigates.

Naval battles/skirmishes with small, fast ships are more fun, and they just look much better. 16 gun brigs or gun-schooner are just beautiful.

I must say I personally am a great fan of the 64-gunner: a fourth rate.

after some deliberation I decided to do the preorder thing. The current Alpha build is focused on ship to ship combat, but there is a (be it rather crude) boarding mechanism in place as well. The video Im placing here shows a big ship PVP battle. There are however pvp matches with Light ship classes as well and for those that want it, there is PVE as well. There is also one map in the current build that includes combat in stormy weather...

Game is pretty good so far, been playing it for a day or so. It is a bit of a grind at the beginning though as you have a pretty terrible starter ship that you use to do repeatable missions for XP and money. However, the starter ship without upgrades deals very little damage so be prepared for 20-30 minute duels against AI ships. Once you get rolling though its very easy to make money and progress. Make your money before the debuff the amount you get as capturing and selling ships w/ their cargo gets you enormous amounts of money. You'll probably be able to buy a better ship before you have the level to properly crew it.
