2016 Rio Olympics Thread

Thought I'd make a thread about the 2016 Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro.

Opening ceremony is on 6th August. I really enjoyed both the Beijing and London ones and they were really different from one another, though they're saying the Rio opener won't try and compete with those.

They're calling it 'the worst ever' after lots of Chinese athletes and tourists have been robbed/scammed by locals and the accommodation has started falling down. Though some are also saying it's supposedly 'even worse than London 2012', which is generally considered to have been a good Olympic Games. I get the feeling that after the success of 2008 the Chinese have some kind of inferiority complex about it and want to do everyone else down so maybe their criticism is exaggerated.

Fuck the Olympics. Not saying the concept of determining the best athletes is wrong but the Olympics is just a nationalistic circle jerk of countries trying to say that their better than others, especially the US and China. These games often come at great expense to the poor who live in areas where they are held. Not to mention the fucking tax burden is outrageous for 2 weeks of increased commerce. Its not a good trade at all.

Brazil could have used that money to clean up the literal shit in their water. I feel that the Olympics should just be held in one location to prevent billions of dollars being wasted on accommodations and stadiums just to not be used again. That money could have gone toward fighting Zika, lel

I think the Games should have been called off/delayed due to Zika, but the WHO and others have said it should still go ahead. If the virus spreads and many more babies are born with microephaly in other parts of the world in the aftermath of Rio then there should be a major lawsuit.
