The Palmetto Sharpshooters, also known as Jenkins' 1st Palmetto Regiment, was a Confederate States Army sharpshooter regiment from South Carolina which was active from April 1862 to 1865. It was organized from transfers from the 2nd, 5th, and 9th South Carolina Infantry Regiments, and it fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Battle of Williamsburg to the Battle of Fredericksburg before serving in North Carolina and then at the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battle of Knoxville.
Afterwards, the Palmetto Sharpshooters returned to Virginia and continued the fight at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war at Appomattox. The regiment reported 2 casualties at South Mountain, 65 at Sharpsburg, 4 at Fredericksburg, and 44 at Wauhatchie. The regiment, which started with 1,100 troops on its roster, ended the war with only 29 officers and 356 enlisted men.
The field officers were Colonels Micah Jenkins and Joseph Walker; Lieutenant Colonel John W. Goss; and Majors William Anderson, William W. Humphreys, and Franklin W. Kilpatrick.
