Regiments / 42nd Black Watch -RECRUITING-
« on: September 05, 2013, 02:31:57 am »

The 42nd Black Watch at Waterloo.
Otherwise known as 'The Royal Black Watch', was originally a Highland Patrol regiment that literally patrolled Scotland from 1716 (just after the Jacobite rebellion) to 1725. They were organized by Clan Grant and dubbed the Am Freiceadan Dubh which literally translates from Gaellic into "The Dark" or "Black Patrol", but in English we know it as the Black Watch. The theory on how this regiment got the nickname 'black' ranges from the simple fact that they wore dark tartan or how they fought with 'black hearts filled with Scottish spirit.'

In 1739 the six Highland Watch companies were augmented to ten companies and and incorporated into the regular forces of the Crown as the Earl of Crawford's Regiment of Foot. The regiment was numbered the 43rd Regiment of Foot in 1747m changing to 42nd in 1749. In 1751 the regiment was titled '42nd Highland Regiment' and in 1758 was permitted the honor to add 'Royal'to its title. However, it continued to be known as the 'Black Watch'.

They've lead numerous battles, such as Battle of Ordashu, (The Third Anglo-Ashanti War) and turned the battle quite notably in other famous battles like Waterloo and even in The Great War.

The Black Watch was formed as part of the Childers Reforms in 1881 when the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment of Foot was combined with the 73rd Perthshire Regiment of Foot to form two battalions of the newly named Black Watch(Royal Highlanders).

I could've gone on and on about the 42nd Black Watch, but there's too much history and knowledge and too little time. A lot of people question why the British Empire is being added to the Franco-Prussian war mod, but I'll gladly embrace it so I can wear a kilt and lead a few good scotts into battle.

As this regiment is for Blood & Iron, it is not part, or have anything to do with the 42nd of Napoleonic Wars, and neither do I claim credit of their Colonel's hard work.

My theory so far on why they are in the Franco-Prussian war is because the French direly needed help and suddenly England decided they were allies. Due to a vote, other nations such as the British Empire are being included for a bit of variety in the mod.
