German Military Ranking
« on: June 03, 2013, 10:51:21 am »
Obviously with the release of Blood and Iron there's been a jump in the number of Prussian regiments in game (understandable, since the Prussians won), and with that most regiments have adopted a ranking structure similar to that employed by the North German Confederation and South German states of Baden, Württemberg, Bavaria and Hesse-Darmstadt. In-game, the II. Königlich are representative of a Bavarian unit, and as a result use the current ranking system;

Spoiler
Generale

Generalfeldmarschall
Generaloberst
General der Infanterie / Kavallerie / Artillerie
Generalleutnant
Generalmajor

Stabsoffiziere

Oberst
ObLt/OLt - Oberstleutnant
Mjr/Maj - Major

Hauptleute

Hptm - Hauptmann (Captain)

Subalternoffiziere

OLt - Oberleutnant (First Lieutenant)
Lt - Leutnant (Lieutenant)
FwLt - Feldwebelleutnant (Second Lieutenant)

Unteroffiziere

Fhr - Fähnrich
OffzSt - Offiziersstellvertreter
Fw - Feldwebel (Sergeant-Major)
Vfw - Vizefeldwebel (Junior Sergeant-Major)

Sgt - Sergeant
Uffz/Kpl - Unteroffizier/Korporal

Mannschaften

OGefr - Obergefreiter (Senior Lance Corporal/Second Lance Corporal)
Gefr - Gefreiter (Lance Corporal)
Knr - Kanonier (Gunner)
Rek - Rekrut (Recruit)

Special appointments

Pnr - Pioneer
[close]

It's worth noting that different nations used different names for the standard rank, generally serving as equivalent to Private. These were Musketeer (Musketier - Prussian army infantry regiments), Infantryman (Infanterist - Bavarian army infantry regiments), Soldier (Soldat - Saxon army infantry regiments), Gunner (Kanonier - foot artillery), Pioneer (Pionier - pioneer branch). Other unit-specific enlisted ranks were: Fusilier (Füsilier), Grenadier (Grenadier), Huntsman otherwise Light-Infantryman (Jäger), Dragoon (Dragoner), Hussar (Husar), Cuirassier (Kürassier), Uhlan (Ulan), Fusilier Guard (Garde-Füsilier), Grenadier Guard (Garde-Grenadier), etc.

I don't really know much about the French ranking structure, so I can't really say what the equivalent structure is. However, the list provided here is my personal interpretation of the structure and function. I'm more than likely wrong, but hey, it's my first time sorting out a rank structure outside of the British Army. :P

Just a little addition; here are a pair of Bavarian military medals, as well as a link to Bavarian and German military orders, decorations and medals.

You can abbreviate Feldwebel as Fw and Unteroffizier as Uffz

I've seen a few people using those abbreviations; we'll probably switch to that identification ourselves so that people can fit their full names in. :P

To be fair, that isn't massively different from the list I suggested; with the exception of the inclusion of the structure above Hauptmann and the slight restructuring of Unteroffiziere and inclusion of alternative abbreviations and names for some of the ranks. Given my German isn't as ideal as it used to be and the fairly short time it took me to construct that list, it isn't all that bad.

I'll look into adjusting our structure once I'm out of lectures for the day; I'll also consult a few German members of the regiment for translations of orders, decorations and medals.

We've chosen to skip out on those ranks for the sake of keeping it condensed. However, I'll adjust the suggested ranking structured based on Crozade's one. :P

Seems as Obergefreiter is an Artillery rank and is on par with Korporal.

If your gonna have 1 arty rank you should add the rest like Fuerwerkerleutnant and whatnot.

Hold on, i'll find out where i read it.

I'll take a look at that after our event tonight. Ultimately, I'd love to have an accurate ranking structure stuck up for Artillery and Naval detachments within a week or so.
