~ Nr. 2 Grenz-Infanterie "Otocaner" Regiment ~ {NA} *MERGED*

~ Nr. 2 Grenz-Infanterie "Otocaner" Regiment ~ {NA}
Welcome to the page of the Nr. 2 Grenz Infanterie Regiment, or Nr2-Grenz! We are a relaxed and friendly Napoleonic Wars regiment that plays mostly as Artillery and Skirmishers. We accept players from all over the world, but we are mainly a North American community.

It is important for any joining members to understand that we are not just a Napoleonic Wars regiment, but a gaming community. Our current obsession is Europa Universalis 4, and we enjoy playing other games like Total War and CS:GO.

~ History of the Grenzers ~

In the 16th century, emperor Ferdinand I of the Holy Roman Empire created two military districts on the Habsburg frontier with Ottoman Turkey. The Croatian and Hungarian frontiers were obligated to supply troops to the Empire for defense against the Turks, and for the Emperor's other wars during peace with the Turks. So began a long tradition of Austrian recruitment of frontiersman.
Early Croatian Grenzers
The Grenzers were recruited from the districts of the Croatian region, and served as the first line of defense between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe. During the Napoleonic era, Grenzers were trained in both light and line tactics. They were expert marksman, as well as highly disciplined and ferocious in hand-to-hand combat. Grenzer regiments were highly independent, and usually had their own artillery and even cavalry to support themselves. They were highly versatile in battle, and were able to go into loose formations and skirmish, and then to form line and act with the cool discipline of a professional regiment.
Napoleonic Grenzers
At the outbreak of war in 1805, there were 13,000 Grenzers in Austrian service. Napoleon held the Grenzers in high regard, and called them the most ferocious soldiers in the Austrian army. When Croatia was annexed by Napoleon, the French wasted no time in incorporating the Grenzers into the their army. After the Napoleonic Wars, the threat of Ottoman Turkey diminished, and the Grenzers became less important in the Austrian army. With the rise of nationalism, the non-Austrian Grenzers became mistrusted by the Austrian military command, and were downsized. A small number of Grenzers served in World War I, and continued to serve until the fall of the empire in 1918.
~ History of the Nr. 2 Grenz-Infanterie ~

The Nr. 2 were recruited from Otočac in southern Croatia. They fought with distinction at both Marengo and Austrelitz, despite the serious defeats both of those battles were for the Austrians. In the Treaty of Schönbrunn, Croatia was annexed by France. The Nr. 2 Grenz, as well as the Nr.1, Nr.3, Nr.4, Nr.10, and Nr. 11, went into French service. They remained under French command until Napoleon's abdication in 1814. They were thereafter reinstated into the Austrian army.
Artillery

Our artillery wing is led by our regimental leader, Marcus. We are all experienced with artillery, and our detachment has spots for loaders, shooters, sappers, and officers. Ranks will be decided on experience and skill in shooting. Regardless of rank, everyone will get a chance to fire the cannons. We will mostly use regular field guns during regular linebattles, and howitzers and mortars during siege. If you're not too good of a shot, don't worry! We have regular trainings were everyone is allowed to fire their own cannons. Those who are seen to have the best shots are given priority during events. Historically, Grenzer regiment often had light artillery for support that would be crewed by Grenzer artillerymen. With artillery in their units, the Grenzers became more versatile and self sufficient.

~ Skirmishers ~

Austrian grenzers were some of the most impressive marksman of the Napoleonic Wars. We too pride ourselves on our marksmanship skills. Co-led by Korman and RedRedcoat, we have experience in both light infantry and skirmisher tactics. We will play primarily as rifles, but we will sometimes play as light infantry as well. Historically, Austrian Grenzers were some of the most skilled marksman of the Napoleonic Era. These rugged frontiersman were used to the difficulties of Balkan life, and regularly used rifles in their own daily lives. Many strange and exotic weapons found their way into the hands of these Croations, such as double-barreled muskets and hand mortars. Grenzers had a wide set of skills in terms of firearms, from rifles, to shotguns to regulation muskets. This versatility and skill made them a deadly force on the battlefield.

MORE TO COME

~ Line Infantry ~
We are starting to place a greater focus on line tactics and melee in our regiment. We currently have one line event during our schedule, and we hope to add more in the future. Our line is led by Korman and has experienced meleers and good marksmen. Currently, we aren't doing 1v1s or NWL, but this may come in the future. This is a growing component of our regiment, and we plan to eventually make this a professional component of our regiment. Historically, Grenzer regiments acted in both regular line roles and irregular light roles. They were at their best in melee combat, and were also very good marksmen, which made them a formidable component of the Austrian military. Grenzers were present at most Austrian battles, including Austrelitz, Marengo, Leipzig, and Ulm.
