HISTORY

Perhaps the most important of the reforms carried out by Archduke Charles was the new Prinz Rohan-Reglemet. It aimed to humanize discipline and raise troop morale by better treatment. It sharply condemned brutality. The introduction of the code was accompanied by a shortened term or conscription. (Rothenberg - "The Emperor's Last Victory" p 46) The enlistments were 6 years for infantrymen and 10 for cavalrymen. According to John Stallaert "Training was inconsistent; whereas the regulars were well-disciplined, numbers of untrained men were often present in units enlarged to wartime establishment, and the usual parsimony hindered practice. For example, in 1805 Archduke Ferdinand reported, "Since many of the newly-arrived troops have still to be trained in musketry, I approve the issue of six live rounds to be fired by every such man"! Though an isolated case, the evidence of an exercise before the Emperor at Minkendorf, in which cavalry and grenadiers actually began to fight each other, leaving 3 dead and 60 wounded, does not reflect well either upon the central command nor upon methods of training ! "

The Austrian troops were well supplied and equipped. Every soldier carried a fur-covered leather back-pack called Tornister. There was 1 tent for every 5 men, 1 wagon for each company, 4-6 carts and wagons and 30 packhorses with ammunition (on average 36 rounds for every soldier) for every battalion of 6 companies. Officers were also allowed individual packhorses. The senior officers and generals however brought excessive baggage, numerous carts and horses. It slowed down movements of the army. In 1809 regiment of infantry had 26 packhorses, while Grenzer regiment only 7. The Jäger battalion had 12 and cavalry regiment none. The supplies for infantry regiment were carried on 13 wagons (4 horses each) and 26 pack animals.

As an army the Austrians lost more battles than won. In general the bigger was the tactical unit the greater chance was for the French to win. French army, corps and even division was better trained in large scale maneuvers and had more battle experience than the Austrian army and corps. The individual Austrian line regiments however were reliable and some fought with great tenacity and bravery. The individual Austrian soldier was well trained and far more disciplined than the Frenchman. There is much exagerration about the "poor Austrians". The white-coats enjoyed many successes on regimental level (but less on brigade and divisional levels)

Reputation

The grenadiers were elite troops and most often were kept in reserve. They were used in decisive moments as a breakthrough force or to stabilize the wavering line. The grenadiers used bayonets on every possible occassion. In 1807 was issued order forbiding them to fight as skirmishers. I don't know how long this order was obeyed.
The Hungarian grenadiers were considered as being good fighters and is not surprising that they gripped the enemy imagination. Often a defeated party of Austrian infantry was likely to be reported as battalions of those mustachioed Hungarians. For example, in the official report after the battle of Engen (May 1800) the French claimed to have pushed 8 battalions of the Hungarians out of a wood, although there was none. General Kellerman claimed to have captured 6.000 Hungarian grenadiers at Marengo, yet there were at most 3.000 in the last phase and none were Hungarian.
In 1809 at Aspern-Essling Napoleon ordered Young Guard to recapture the village of Essling. Everybody knew what to expect as there were several battalions of Austrian grenadiers. The Guard Tirailleurs "stopped the advance of Austrian grenadiers" but their own impetus was also stalled. Napoleon supported the tirailleurs with Guard Fusiliers. Together they pushed the grenadiers out of village. The Guard however paid a heavy price, Generals Mouton, Gros and Curial were wounded. Approx. 25 % of rank and file were either killed or wounded. Such casualties had been enough to fill all their ambulances. The Young Guard was so enraged at the heavy losses that they bayoneted the wounded grenadiers.

Uniforms

The Austrian infantrymen wore one of the simplest uniforms in Europe. They were however well made and elegant. The Austrian and British coats were one of the best targets for enemy marksmen as white and red are the most visible colors from the distance. "White stood out in the field, when one of the functions was to make a good show. In the course of time coats of blue faded badly, those of pike gray turned a dirty ashen color, and those of green assumed a tinge of yellow, while repairs were all too evident on dyed coats of any kind, and added to a general look of shabbiness. Coats of white, on the other hand, could always be worked up with chalk to make them look 'new and brilliant."

    *SIGN*Competition Details
The North American Duel League is a monthly league in which players will compete against others of similar skill to rise through 6 divisions of the league: Masters, Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. At the beginning of every season, players in each division will play each other round robin style, with 10 rounds (10 duels) being played against each of the players in their division. Players will accumulate points based on how many of these rounds they win (ex. Player 1 wins against Player 2 6-4, he gets 6 points, Player 2 gets 4 points). At the end of this phase of play, the regular season will be declared over and the the #1 ranked player in Masters division is declared the League Champion. After this, the Postseason will begin with the top 2 players of each division playing each other to represent their division in the league' playoffs. After this is done, playoffs will proceed as follows: The Bronze representative will face the Silver representative, with the winner proceeding to face the Gold representative, and the winner of that facing the Plat one, then the Diamond one, and finally the Masters one, with the  winner of that final match will be announced the winner of the League Playoffs. After the League Playoffs, promotion stage will begin with the top 2 of every division playing against the bottom 2 of the division above (ie. #1 of Gold would face #6 of Platinum, #2 of Gold would face #5 of Platinum), and the winners of those matches will proceed to the upper division, with the losers getting demoted to the division below.

    *SIGN*First Season Competition
For the first season of the league, where players have not had ranks prior to this season, the season will begin randomly placing players into the 6 divisions (which for now will just be called division 1,2,3,4,5,6). After that, the league will proceed as normal with a round robin between all the players of each division. Afterwards, the top player of each division will be placed in Masters for next season, the second player in Diamond, the third in Platinum, and so on. There will most likely not be playoffs this first season, however there will be a post-season tournament with a round robin in the masters division to determine the regular season champion.

    *SIGN*Rules
-The Round Robin part of the season will go for two weeks after the start of the season. There will be no set date of when players have to duel, besides the deadline at the end at the end of the second week. However, Players MUST schedule ALL of their matches in their division before the end of the first week, or risk getting disqualified or automatically demoted
-Each duel will consist of 10 rounds played, no more, no less. If a player leaves in the middle of a duel, they risk forfeiting all points they won in the duel, and the remaining player will get all 10 points
-Any player who schedules a duel and fails to make the appointed time without clearing it with me or another co-organizer/referee automatically forfeits the match, with a 0-10 loss for them
-All duels must either be reported by BOTH players or observed by a referee. A referee can either be an official one that I have appointed myself, or just a random person who both players agree may observe the match and report the score
-No trash talking. If you are saying things that are hurtful to the other player, you can risk forfeiting points depending on the severity of the offense
-Post-season tournaments will begin the week after the regular season, and will be on set dates. If you qualify for a postseason game but fail to attend it, tough luck.
    -Have fun :)

We accept members of any skill/experience level (we have practices/trainings for a reason) and from both the North American and European Community (though we only attend North American events).

    Brief in-game History
We were formerly the 98e Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne, but felt a need to reconstruct and re-identify ourselves after a rather unfortunate incident.

5.You will bring issues to the attention of the Colonel or  Lieutenant Colonel, whether inter-regimental (not getting along with another member) or with someone in the community.
    6.Resolve your issues peacefully!

    *Bracket*

    Canadian Melee League

    *League Details
The Canadian Melee League's purpose is to be a casual tournament style league to determine who the best of the best is of the Canadian melee scene. These duels will consist of 10 rounds being played during a season, with rounds won being transferred to points. Depending on how many sign up, a few of these fine Canuck Killing Machines will progress to the final stage where they will fight first to 7 matches against eachother. There will also be no divisions in the league for either the regular season or final tournament, everyone will be in the same pool to face each other (how can you really claim best CA if you haven't faced all other contenders?).
    [/b][/size]
    *League Rules
-Once you set a date for your match, you are expected to make it, if you cannot make it and fail to clear it with a ref/organizer then the match is considered forfeit with your opponent receiving all 10 points (no rematch will be given)
-All matches MUST be observed and reported by a referee, the referee must also take a screen shot of the final score.
-Friendly Banter on the forum is acceptable, as is public discussion. Flame wars and sh*t posting will not be tolerated. Single offense warrants a warning. If a warned party continues, they will receive a suspension from the league. If a suspended party continues after that, they will be banned from the league.

    *Match Specific Rules
-Duelists MUST separate after accepting the duel and wait for the referee/overseer to give the "OK" before they may engage. If a player attempts to engage before the referees signal, the round will automatically go to their opponent.
-Unsportsmanlike conduct (such as but not limited to) trash talking and t-bagging will not be acceptable. Offenders may receive anything from a warning to a disqualification depending on both severity and repetition. This is a friendly competition, salt may occur, but we can stay civil towards each other.
-Line Infantry only, both duelists should agree on a faction between UK and France. No Marines.
-Both duelists must agree on map/server.
    -No shooting...obviously
    -Bayonets only.
-You may NOT have a person ref the match if he is not a referee within the league.
-Matches may have spectators only if agreed upon by both participants.
-Spectators may only do just that, spectate.
-Matches may be recorded/streamed unless one or both participants explicitly request it not be.

    Recruitment Message
We are the 98e Regiment Infanterie d'Ligne, a North American Regiment and we are recruiting any active players of the NW community, regardless of skill level (or location really)! We always welcome the experience of other veteran players, but even if you're new, we've got veteran players waiting and willing to train you to achieve your potential in both marksmanship and melee!

Brief in game history about us
98e was formed July 18th, 2012 by Colonel Hotfire. It had some rough patches, but 98e has endured any and all hardships, each time coming back stronger than before! Our recent reformation was in March 2015 when we became a competitive regiment in the Twitch Napoleonic Wars League (or TNWL).

    How our ranking system works:
    Spoiler
    For the Enlisted;
Cadets, CaD - If you have no previous regimental experience and are relatively new to the game, you will be given the rank of Cadet [CaD]. As a Cadet you will be allowed to attend casual events such as, Linebattles, non-competitve regimental 1v1's and scrimmages. You will not however be allowed to attend our competitive matches. Cadets will be promoted to Soldats once they have been observed by an NCO or Officer to have increased their original skill level. (generally takes about 2 weeks of practices)

Soldats, Sdt - Soldats are the improved Cadets, they may still attend the events they did as Cadets, and although they are not part of the starting lineup for our competitive matches, they are still brought as reserves. New members may start at a Soldat rank if they have no regimental experience, but some clear skill at the game.

Soldat De Deuxieme, SoD - Soldat de Deuxieme's are brought to every type of match they can attend, and a long with Soldat de Premier, make up the bulk of our fighting force. Soldat de Deuxieme can be achieved through working up from Cadet/Soldat or if you have previous experience and obvious skill in one aspect of the game (shooting or melee).

Soldat de Premier, SoP - Soldat de Premiers along with Soldat de Deuxieme, make up the bulk of our fighting force and as such are brought to every event. Soldat de Premier can be achieved by working up from Cadet/Soldat or having  previous experience within a regiment and having obvious skill at the game (both shooting and melee).

Gardes, Grd - Gardes are the most skilled enlisted within the regiment. Garde can be achieved by competing in a tournament of skill held once a month amongst the SoD's and SoP's. Where the top SoP is given the chance to be  promoted to Garde (explained later), and the top SoD will be able to compete against the 2nd placed SoP for a chance to leapfrog up to Garde. The guards are expected to take a lead role when melee breaks out, but are also expected to be able to shoot just as well as any other member of the regiment.

Garde Premier, GrdP - There is only 1 Garde Premier. Once a month a tournament is held amongst the Garde's to determine who the best of the best is. The winner is given the rank (though more of a title than rank) Garde Premier. Aspiring Gardes are tested against the Garde Premier to determine whether or not they should be granted the rank of Garde.
